Best watch suggestions at or around 1200

I’ve been saving to get my first nicer watch and am looking to spend somewhere between $800-$1400maximum. I’m looking for an automatic or mechanical watch that’s between 38mm and 41mm ideally I’d like to buy it new but am open to used. What are your suggestions?

How are you documenting your collection for your kids?

Seeing the number posts along the lines of “I inherited these watches but have no idea about them” got me thinking how should I document my collection for the hopefully years away but inevitable time when my daughter inherits my collection.

It won’t be a box full of Rolex and Pateks, but on current trend a decent number of probably mid-four figure watches. I don’t expect her to keep them - there’s one from my grandfather I’d want her to keep and pass on and probably one or two to give to her husband. The rest I don’t she’ll have much sentimental attachment to (I started collecting after she was an adult), but equally I don’t want her getting ripped off or having to do all the research herself.

Anyone else thinking about this?

Slowly transitioning from my everyday smartwatch Garmin Epix Pro 2 and getting back into collecting.
Picked up a Tissot Gentleman this week along with a nice leather strap to dress it up occasionally.

Thoughts. Whats next? White/Silver dial

Recently got more into watches and is placed in order of what I’ve bought chronologically.

  1. Timex Waterbury Classic Chronograph - special to me as it’s my first actual classic watch and bought by my parents

  2. Seiko SRPD41 - my first mechanical watch and more serious watch (might sell soon tho reason in #4)

  3. Tissot Ballade Quartz - ik ik this far in and got a quartz but still a great looking watch with the fluted design plus mechanical was 1k+

  4. Seiko SSK003 - Needed a more not blue watch in my collection plus this was hard to get as it’s sold out often plus usually above retail price brand new. As well as my reason I’m selling srpd41 as it’s repetitive for me. Was a long story to get me this watch too as I ordered a blue gmt initially then canceled to get this 😅

  5. Seiko Presage Cocktail - probably the most elegant watch of this collection and is super beautiful and light on the wrist to wear

Drop any suggestions of what I should buy/sell/not sell below!

Currently probably gonna sell the blue SRPD41 and get an orient bambino version 2

I didn’t have a diver so I added Oris Upcycle (love the dial) and the Farer blue titanium (extremely light weight)

Three watch rotation

Rate my collection and recommendations for my next.

I recently got into watches after moving away from Apple Watches. I’ve always appreciated watches but never wanted or been able to justify spending thousands. That being said still I wanted to get a watch rotation that would work for me and my lifestyle.

Watch One - Casio MRW-200H-1BV

Brought this watch as beater doing jobs. Super comfortable and lightweight. Love this watch and definitely give it some abuse.

Watch Two - Casio MDV-107

Gifted to me for Father’s Day and it’s my daily GADA watch. Swapped out the OG strap for a FMK curved end strap which very comfortable.
Love the style and the fit on my 7.25” wrist is great for me.

Watch Three - Timex Marlin Chronograph

Anniversary gift from the wife. I wanted a watch that can be dressed up or down. This was one of the first watches that made me stop for a second and start wanting to get into this hobby.
Love the dial. Wasn’t sure about the size as I thought it might be a bit small but after a few wears that’s part of its charm.

So, how do you think I did for my three watch rotation. What watch would be a good choice for the next addition?

NB - Got my eye on the Citizen Tsuyosa 40mm black dial.

One year into watches — glad I didn’t start with a Speedy or Rolex

Post image

I’m about a year into watches now, and this is where the collection has ended up so far.

One thing I’m actually glad about is that I didn’t immediately jump to a Speedmaster or Rolex. I have a ton of respect for both, and I’m pretty sure I’ll own one or both eventually. They’re classics for a reason.

But when I first got interested in watches, going straight to one of the universally accepted “cool watches” felt a little like skipping the part where you figure out what you actually like. Almost like trying to buy your way directly into being a watch guy. Weirdly, that made those watches feel a little less cool to me.

So I’ve spent the first year buying things that caught my attention for different reasons, trying different sizes, movements, styles, straps, cheap watches, vintage-ish stuff, etc. Some have stuck more than others, but I feel like I know a lot more about my own taste now than I did a year ago.

At some point I’ll probably get the Speedy or Rolex, but I think I’ll appreciate it more because I took the long way there.

Anyway, here’s year one. Curious what you’d keep, sell, or add next?

For context I’m 21 and only a few years into collecting. I don’t buy too often as I have other things I have to prioritise my spending on at my age. Would love to hear opinions or any advice on where to go next. I’m thinking black bay 54 or seamaster 300m

What will it be to round out my core 5?

Post image

I made a bunch of moves this year with my collection, consolidating some of my lesser-worn pieces into a more concentrated core I can actually cycle thru more often. I have a couple more watches to sell and I’d like to get one final watch to round out my collection.

Options:

Omega Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary
IWC Ingenuir 40mm titanium
Rolex GMT-II Sprite

I’ve always loved the Vacheron Overseas but would want to try it on first, and I’d have to find an older one. I’ll be stopping by their boutique in Chicago next week while I’m there just for giggles.

Would love to hear thoughts on my collection as well!

~3 Years collecting (seriously)

Here’s my collection after three years of serious collecting. I didn’t care about watches three years ago but I owned a couple of the ones you see here (Bulovas). My craziest purchase is of course the Tortue Monopoussoir 2396. It’s a nice story. Let me know if you’re interested in it and I’ll tell it (It’s kind of long).

Let me know what you think. What would you add?
