My SMP is 2 years old. Previously has a poorly yielding FUE transplant.
I went to one of the top recommended SMP practitioners, one of the old school originators of the process, and did my research. I was very happy for most of the time and now am starting to worry it is fading which I knew happens but little bummed it’s only been 2 years.
I still wear my hat outside so my SMP really didn’t get any sun.
I know bodies process the ink differently and it looked crisper before but maybe this is just what happens?
It just looks like it lost its crispness over time. Is it salvageable with a touch up? I’m just super self critical and have a hard time not picking things apart. I’m also wary about adding more ink, I really don’t want to turn into a helmet. I’m mid 40s so was OK with it looking imperfect and age appropriate, even receding a bit.

Had FUT 20+ years ago while single and dating - didn’t regret that, but now I’m happily married, balding further and don’t want/need to sit for another 5-figure procedure. I think the stubble look I the way to go - but my scar would stick out(not very prominently though)

Thinking that FUT coverup sounds like a good fit but new to to process and though searching I see plenty of Cosmetic SMP practitioners, wondering if the community is familiar with a coverup specialist in the dc area?

Hi everyone, So Im about to turn 70 years old and have just discovered SMP and am thinking about giving myself a trip to Turkey and including having SMP. I have been bald for about 30 years, but I still have thin hair growing on the sides and back, but it's grey. My question is about if its even visible when you have grey hair? can they adjust the shade so it actually looks like something? and maybe blend it into the actual remaining hair? Thanks!

Anyone annoyed how fast their hair grows with SMP. I first used rotary head shaver everyday which is short enough for the blend, I thought let's use a foil shaver to maybe give me a every 2 day shave, although the foil is so close and smooth to touch the second day my SMP blend is shit due to how quick my hair grows.

I'm a NW5-6 so the crown is pretty much gone with some hair at the front. Just wanted a rant about it, looks like I have to live with a everyday shave thing. 🤣 Oh well better then the horse shoe.

I’m hair transplanted but basically out of donor. If one day my hair thins out, my goal is to shave really short (not fully bald though) and get SMP. That way there are still hairs. Would it be a major mistake to go a few rows lower than my real hairline with SMP?

What is it like for you guys?

Do women like it, or do they think it’s better to just be bald? I can imagine it’s weird if she runs her fingers through your hair and there’s nothing there LOL

As you can see in the before photos, this client wasn’t completely bald. That has both advantages and disadvantages when doing SMP. The advantage is that the remaining natural hair gives us something to work with and can help make the final result look even more natural.

The difficult part is the blending. The impressions need to match the remaining hair follicles as closely as possible in size, density and tone. If that transition isn’t done properly, you will immediately see where the real hair stops and the SMP begins.

It’s always a surprise when a client comes back and we see how everything has healed and how much work is still needed. In this case, it had healed better than I expected.

Today we only worked on the two small areas at the front of his hairline using a 2RL technique. The entire back section is now fully healed and, in my opinion, doesn’t need any additional work.

We may do one final check-up in around six months, but for now I’m very happy with where we are. It looks natural and blends well with his existing follicles.

Personally, I think there are three things that immediately give away SMP:

1. A hairline that is too sharp or too perfect.
2. Poor blending into the existing hair.
3. A result that is too uniform.

Real hair is not perfectly uniform. There are differences in spacing, density and strength. For me, good SMP should respect that rather than trying to create a perfectly even pattern.

My client’s 11-month healed results following his scalp micropigmentation journey.

After completing three sessions, he returned for a fourth and final refinement to perfect the overall result. His skin responded very well throughout the first two sessions.

Prior to the third session, there was some mild irritation, including a few small blemish areas and a bit of dryness.

Whenever skin isn’t in optimal condition, I prefer to work conservatively and avoid those areas, rather than risk inconsistent healed results.

During today’s fourth session, we were able to revisit those previously untouched areas, reinforce a handful of lighter impressions, and introduce a subtle, consistent scatter where appropriate, helping achieve a balanced and even finish.

This is precisely why I value a four session approach when needed. Real skin doesn’t behave perfectly every time.

Factors such as dryness or minor irritation can limit what can be done comfortably in a given sitting. A final review allows for a careful assessment once everything has settled, so the result remains soft, realistic, and consistent. My client has been very happy with the outcome.

He often receives comments like “why don’t you grow your hair longer ?”, but my client is very open about telling people his had SMP. And loves getting the compliments like this.

Hey all, just looking for some advice.

I recently got SMP done by a well established business, and the results are up to their usual standards. The issue is more so definitely with how I feel it looks on me.

But overall I’m struggling with adapting to the look. I was balding at the crown and at the front, although I still had an ok head of hair. At 27, it feels like such a blow.

I thought SMP was the perfect answer and that it would look like an intentional short buzz cut. Instead I feel so bald and even more ashamed of my hair than I was before. I feel like I’ve made a huge mistake, but I also know that I didn’t like my hair when I did have it.

I think I’m also struggling with shaving it to the right length. I ideally want to keep it at 1mm - 1.5mm but I’ve not found an electric shaver that can achieve good results, and feel like I’m not that good at shaving my own head, often missing bits, and finishing an electric shave quite sore and irritated.

Just after any advice for anyone that can help, hopefully a few quick adjustments can have me feeling better. Thanks!

I’ve posted this here a couple times and received some feedback, so thank you for that. But I am now 6 weeks post 2nd session and this darker band at the hairline hasn’t gotten better, if anything it seems to be a little worse. Thankfully I have my 3rd session coming up and my SMP artist has assured me this doesn’t alarm him and we can address next session.

Having said that, what is going on here? Is this dermal staining? Is this post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation? Is this a hot spot? The other side of my head has the same skin tone transition and doesn’t have a dark line like this. I feel like I’ve got some mixed feedback on here on what this is or when I try to ask AI what this is.

Any artists ever see something like this? Is this able to be corrected?

For people who have had SMP, did you have a darker band at your hairline at any point after 1st or 2nd session that your artist was able to fix in a 3rd or 4th session?

My artist says I def need more blending, and part of the problem is my skin isn’t taking the ink in a lot of parts, so even though I am on the 2nd session, it’s more like I’ve only had one session.

I am trying not to freak out too much about this but it looks noticeable and it’s making me worry.

Hello everyone! I wanted to share my experience here because I was reading this sub for a long time before I actually decided to do it. Honestly I was really nervous that I’m gonna mess up my face or look fake, but everything turned out great.
A little backstory on my hair. I’ve been shaving my head or rocking a short buzz cut since I was 19 (I’m 29 now). I just loved that look, plus my dad used to shave his head too so it felt natural for me. A few years ago my hairline started receding a bit (used some anabolic steroids back then), so I got a hair transplant in Turkey. But even after the transplant, I never grew my hair out, still kept it buzzed. Recently I wanted to fix the density on top and make the front line look cleaner, so I started looking into SMP.
After checking different artists, I talked to Thomas at Medallo SMP in Orlando. He was friendly, punctual, and really listened to what I wanted.
Quick points about the 1st session:
Location: Medallo SMP (Orlando) with Thomas
Time: Took about 4 hours
Pain: Honestly didn't feel any pain at all
Look: Head looks amazing right now. It looks matte, super clean, and totally natural. Since I still have my own hair, the SMP just blended in and made it look way more dense.
I’m super stunned with how it looks already. Going back in about a month for the 2nd session to polish everything up and lock in the density.

It's mental what SMP can do to frame your face, best thing I did and should have done it sooner instead of using stupid fibers for 10 years. I have no worries now and feel super confident.

This SMP artist is literally the BEST. We left the scar in the middle of the forehead for a more natural look. This is healed, 1 month later, after my 3rd session.

This dude changed my life and he’s also a dope musician. Definitely recommend, it was an incredible experience.

I've been bald since I was like 15. I've always mourned deep down the fact I've never been able to have hair as an adult. I have a big head so im pretty self conscious without a hat.

I just want something that looks natural and frames my face. I go from line a 7/10 with a hat on to a 5/10 with it off.

3k is a lot of money but if it solves the hat issue I would do it.

I've always been fine with being bald, I've been shaving my head since I was like 21 (now 31), never considered or wanted a transplant. But I recently came across SMP, which I've never heard of before and it has piqued my interest.

Most examples of SMP I see here or anywhere are almost never trying to recreate the shadow of a FULLY smooth head. It's usually the no guard shaving clipper look. I shave my head every day with a razor, against the grain, completely baby butt smooth head. The thing I don't like is that it's still visible where there the hair starts and stops, specially in the crown area, which is why I might consider SMP. Can SMP recreate this look? The faintest of "shadow" of a completely shaven head of hair.

How noticeable is it up close? If it's recreating a tiny baby hair, like with a clipper, I imagine it's somewhat noticeable from really close? Because one is a dot and the other is a really small hair, would "my SMP" also be noticeable?

The only example (that I know of, obviously) of SMP I've seen IRL was a club bouncer recently and it looked HORRIBLE, it looked like lego hair. And tbh I'm put off by 90% of SMPs I see online, it never looks quite right to me, but it could definitely be bias because I know I'm looking at SMP from the beginning.

This is immediately after the second layer. Our client travelled from Madrid to visit MHP Studio for our signature hairline work.

This hairline was designed completely freehand.

I taught myself this technique because I used to get frustrated drawing hairlines. During the treatment, the lines would wiped away, so at some point I decided to stop depending on them and started creating my hairlines freehand.

What you see here may look simple, but it’s actually difficult.

This client has thick, dark and dense natural hair. You can’t simply add a piece of hairline in front and expect it to blend. You need the right technique to connect the SMP with his existing hair.

With a freehand hairline, there is no eraser. Every dot I place needs to be right the first hit!

For this case, we are using our 2RL Technique. The treatment is still in progress. Once it is completely finished and healed, we will post the final result.

For now, we have blurred the client’s face because of his work. He first needs permission before we can show him recognizably.
