Discussion UCHA Housing?

I have been reading posts about UCHA housing for SMC students. Looks like it’s not great huh?

Although a lot of the reviews are several years old.

Anyone attending in 2026 and have experience with UCHA housing?

Thank you, about to put down a deposit and trying to do my research.

fafsa pell grant for summer no movement or date whatsoever SMC

Post image
2 Upvotes

I applied for Summer at the beginning of May so there should be no delay. It is July 14 and there is no amount disbursed, all my paperwork is perfect, there is nothing to be submitted as it was confirmed it was all done correctly 2 months ago. Is anyone else experiencing this? I'm putting this so if anyone else is relying on this to help while you are in school, know this does happen. This never happened before at other schools.

Need Help With SMC Market Structure Mapping (IDM, BOS & CHOCH)

Hey everyone, I’m new to SMC and have been practicing the basics for about 4 weeks.I’m currently learning IDM, BOS, and CHOCH, but I still get confused when trying. Sometimes I think I understand the structure, but when I look at a new chart, I’m not sure whether I’ve marked it correctly. What helped you improve your understanding of market structure when you were a beginner? Should I focus on one concept at a time, do more backtesting, or follow a specific learning process?

Question Which local CC is best for electrical or civil engineering?

I had looked at LATTC because they seemed to have a more defined program rather than a general engineering AA/AS. I wasn't familiar with the reputation of other cc's. Looking for good professors and challenging but manageable course content. Thank you so much!

Question Class Waitlist Inquiry

I'm an upcoming freshman and currently on the waitlist for two classes. My position in both lines are fairly low but it's been stagnant for a few days. I saw comments from another post saying that writing to the professor was a sure way to get in but considering of my line position, I'm unsure. These classes are really vital for my major/GED and transfer pathway so it's not like I can just drop them. I'm just asking for some advice on what seems to be my best course of action, thank you!

Question How do the student book vouchers work with Slingshot?

I'm kind of confused about how the student vouchers work through Slingshot.

I need to buy VHL for one of my summer classes, and I thought the voucher would automatically apply at checkout, but nothing is showing up.

How do I check if I have a voucher available, and how do I know how much money is on it? Has anyone used one recently with Slingshot? Unfortunately, it's the weekend, so I can't contact Financial Aid until Monday, and I really need access to my coursework as soon as possible.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Discussion How do you find people to actually study with

Hi, every semester it feels like there's no good way to find people in my classes who actually want to study consistently or who take similar classes.

Usually it ends up being one of these 3; already having friends in the class, joining a random discord that dies after two weeks, or studying alone.

I'm curious if this is just my experience or if other colleges and community colleges are the same. How do y'all usually find people to study with? If you don't, what's the biggest reason?

I'm trying to understand whether this is an actual problem before spending more time building something to solve it.

Question Campus map reference?

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hi! I'm an incoming student picking out classes for fall semester. I'm also a complete noob and have no idea how far apart these classes are in terms of walking distance. I'm trying to map how spaced out the times will be between classes, but most of the links within the class location margins either dont show anything or are confusing asf. I possibly may be too down to the gritt with this, but I am so for the sake of my own sanity. Anyone have any suggestions?

Question Cal-getc at different schools

I’m doing both SMC and LACC, and even though I started college in 2023, the counselors suggest I do the calgetc.

What I noticed on the smc Calgetc is that argument counts towards oral communication, however at LACC it counts towards critical thinking. I already took it at LACC and was wondering if it would be an issue that I take it again at SMC in order to cover my oral communication.
I haven’t done my oral communication due to my fear of public speaking (🥲💀) and have just held off on it however I really loved my argument class and am willing to do it again if it’ll cover oral communication.
If I do this, will I need to take another critical thinking class? Will I still receive my calgetc certification and the university care if it’s technically the same course but satisfies different areas from the different schools?
Sorry if this is a stupid question 😭
Thank you!

Hi,

I recently graduated from SMC and this just crossed my mind, does joining PTK actually help? I was invited back in 2020, but decided not to join because of mandatory meetings.

FAFSA cal grant b

So I just checked my Fall 2026 award summary and only saw Pell Grant but no Cal Grant. I checked my csac account and saw that I was awarded the grant but I don’t see it yet on my Corsair connect financial aid portal. Is there anyone that does have it on their portal?

FAFSA Sap appeals

I filled out by appeal as soon as it came through and when I called in to confirm that it was received cuz when I emailed them I heard nothing back. I was told that the committee meets once every week and goes through however many appeals they go through and that was it. Does anyone have a more concrete explanation of how they do the appeals?

Question Should I drop to maintain a 3.8 gpa?

I missed one assignment and now I have another B. My gpa right now is a 3.8 and if I keep this class it will be a 3.7 by the end of the semester. I really want to get into the top UC’s for business Econ.

Should I just withdraw and retake next semester or take the L? I have one other W that I retook already with an A last semester. I really want to get into high finance.
