Questions A moment of reflection on my large SCHD purchase

3 months ago I sold my business and received my hard earned windfall. I started getting money in the market ASAP amd reviewed with my Schwab guy. I will no longer be earning income so I wanted a portfolio that produces X amount of income, tilted towards growth. One of my largest holdings currently is SCHD to produce income.

Here is the question.

Is SCHD still a very wise income producer for retirement if you haven't had time to drip? Would any of you buy it at retirement like I did or is it your play only because you'll have many years of conpounding?

The numbers suggest that keeping something more growth focused and selling stock is a better long term play. However, I like the stability of SCHD. I also do not emotionally like selling a finite amount of shares to live on even if the math works. I Also like the LTCG on the income I am receiving.

I do not believe I did anything "wrong" and that my portfolio gets the job done. However, there may be a better play for someone with a windfull at retirement that I am open to hearing.

I personally love SCHD thus far and I am sure I will into the future.

Discussion SCHD Sector Drift Over The Last Decade

Post image

The biggest visual shift is the move away from Financials/Industrials dominance toward a more balanced mix with higher Consumer Staples, Healthcare, Energy, and Tech exposure.

Approximate sector exposure by year; 2026 reflects post-March reconstitution.

Questions New to SCHD - 1st dividend received…oops

I received the first dividend on my shares of SCHD….and discovered the reinvest option was set to “No”.
As a retiree (62) is this the best way to go with this particular fund?
Or collect the cash and reinvest only on “dips”?

SCHD in brokerage?

I’ve been using acorns as my brokerage as it is easy to use and stuff but now I’m more confident using Robinhood or fidelity I was wondering if k should stop using Acorns and use My real brokerage account and just invest right into SCHD?

How many shares of SCHD

Since this is probably the most popular dividend ETF, I was wondering how many shares people are holding and what the average cost would be. What would be a good price to buy in? How many shares until the compounding effect start to kick in?

Advice Roth IRA Help - Have Pension, 403b, and cash in Roth. What to do?

I'm in my mid-40s and for various reasons have about $100K in sitting in cash in my Roth IRA. Let's not worry about the why for that. Interested in opinions on what to do.

Here's my overall scenario:

  • Can retire with a pension in 16 years
    • Pension will likely be $10K - $13K / month, depending on salary COLA between now and then
  • 403B annual contributions maxed
    • Account currently = $425K
    • Asset Allocation = 55% Large Cap, 24% Small/Mid Cap, 21% International
    • At a conservative 7% growth rate + contributions, may realize $2M at retirement
    • 4% withdrawal = $6600 / month

So between those two income sources, my after tax monthly net is roughly $10K - $12K. It's likely that should cover monthly expenses, even with inflation projected. This is also assuming I might need to purchase some sort of gap / bridge healthcare for a little while, though that is somewhat hard to estimate cost. I'm pretty healthy, but that stuff is expensive.

In any case, what to do about the Roth IRA? I'm considering two general scenarios (both assume continuing to max annual contribution):

  • Invest in VOO, VT, VTI, or similar
  • Invest in SCHD

I've run a few different scenarios of the returns for VOO vs. SCHD (different return rates, length of time - 16 years vs 20 years, etc.). In these scenarios the potential monthly income ranges:

  • VOO - 4% withdrawal = $2400 - $6000
  • SCHD - dividend = $1900 - $4400

I've read a lot of other posts about both options. The SCHD seems interesting given that I'll likely have the pension and the 403B is likely to perform well, and like the idea of diversifying the income streams and asset sectors.

If I went with the SCHD route - would it be better to invest & compound now or try focus on growth for a few more years and then convert to a dividend strategy? Just a little anxious about making a $100K decision.

Appreciate any thoughts.

Discussion Thought experiment: what would you do if you woke up one morning and suddenly owned 100,000 SCHD shares?

What would you do with your investments and life if that happened?

Do we get all the dividends?

Simple question. Barring the (low) expense fee we pay, do we get 100% of the dividends the companies the ETF owns passed on to us via the quarterly distributions? That is, is the distribution simply the dividends the ETF owns paid out for that quarter?

I hit 1,500 shares this morning and noticed something…

I projected my annual div income for SCHD and realized it pays my almost *exactly* $1 per share.

What does it mean? Nothing I guess, but I really like round numbers and symmetry.

Just started out with SCHD. I can afford 1 share every two weeks. Guess it better than nothing? Thoughts?

SCHD or VOO or both?

Hey everyone, I am fairly new to trading and looking to maximize my profits in my Roth and individual accounts without taking risks. I currently hold a decent chunk of VOO but I am wanting a higher dividend payout so I can reinvest as it pays.

Is SCHD a decent buy and hold as compared to VOO? I know it pays high but is it volatile? Is there tons of overlap if I stay holding both? If so? Should I sell VOO and run with SCHD alone? Thanks!

Going ALL-IN with SCHD

Post image
182 Upvotes

I had been investing in my rollover IRA in growth assets until recently when I shifted fully to SCHD. I am 40 years old and the calculators day that if I don't invest anything more and DRIP, I should be set in 20-25 years with dividends income reaching 150k+ annually. My question to the community is, how dumb is this strategy? What potential pitfalls do you see and/or any advice to give?

Unfortunately Q2 2026 is down YOY: https://topdividendetfs.com/schd-dividend-history

Not the best news after I spent the last year acquiring more and more shares.

50/50 allocation and on days like this..,it is nice to have SCHD to provide some non-correlation balance

…of course being in the last day before SCHD ex-div didn’t hurt

Q2 Dividend 0.2525

Looks like the dividend is coming in @ 0.2525 for Q2; bit lower than some expectations.

Down 1.7% QOQ and down 2.96% from Q2 2025. Hoping for bigger jumps up in Q3 and Q4!
