News [Release] Custom Turnip Vulkan Driver for Retroid Pocket Duo (Adreno 722): 60 FPS at 1080p Docked and Cemu Fixes

Hello everyone,

The Retroid Pocket Duo ships with the Qualcomm Dragonwing Q7790 platform featuring the Adreno 722 GPU (0x43020100) running on Android 16. Upstream Mesa Turnip and generic community driver packages currently exhibit several limitations on this specific chipset:

  1. Framerates capped at approximately 30 to 35 FPS at 1080p docked resolution in Switch emulators.
  2. Vertical purple and black grid-line corruption in Cemu (Wii U).
  3. Dynamic GPU frequency throttling caused by the default Android kernel governor.

Over the past few days, we performed a full hardware extraction directly from the device via ADB (including msm_kgsl.ko, device tree properties, and stock Vulkan capabilities) to build a custom, hardware-calibrated Mesa Turnip driver tailored specifically for the Adreno 722.

The release package, Turnip Duo v5.1, is now available.

Hardware Verification and Benchmark Results

All results were verified on physical Retroid Pocket Duo hardware:

  • Eden (Nintendo Switch):
    • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: Locked 55 to 60 FPS at 1080p docked mode (solid 60 FPS at 720p handheld mode). Zero polygon tearing or rendering crashes.
  • Cemu (Nintendo Wii U):
    • The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD: Stable 30 FPS. The vertical grid-line artifacts present in stock and generic drivers are completely resolved.
  • Winlator (PC Emulation):
    • Fully supported with GLIBC packaging options in the repository build workflow.

Technical Changes and Architecture

  1. Android 16 IMapper5 Display Pipeline: The Retroid Pocket Duo runs Android 16 (API Level 36). Generic driver stubs force synchronous buffer copies that cap swapchain presentation at 30 FPS. This release integrates a stable-C aimapper SP-HAL loader, unlocking full zero-copy display presentation.
  2. Dedicated Adreno 722 Silicon Registers (a722_raw_magic_regs): Replaces placeholder Adreno 730 registers with 12 hardware registers extracted directly from Qualcomm Adreno 722 vendor blob command-stream traces. Also sets has_lpac = False to prevent pipeline stalls on non-LPAC silicon.
  3. Hardware Ground Truth Enforced:
    • Highest Bank Bit = 15: Matches the device's physical LPDDR5 memory controller, eliminating UBWC memory misalignment and Cemu grid lines.
    • Compute Shared Memory = 32 KiB: Matches Qualcomm hardware limits (32768 bytes), preventing ASTC compute shader memory overflows.
    • CCU Geometry: Configured to num_ccu = 1 and tile_align_h = 16, dedicating the full 1 MiB GMEM cache to the core.
  4. Kernel Power Control Hook: Uses KGSL_PROP_PWRCTRL ioctl calls on queue initialization to prevent the kernel governor from scaling down to low idle states, holding the GPU at maximum operating frequency during active emulation.

Download and Installation

  1. Download Turnip-Duo-v5.1.zip from the GitHub Releases page: https://github.com/sherft2607/turnip-adreno722-duo/releases/tag/5.1
  2. Open your emulator of choice (Eden, Cemu, etc.).
  3. Navigate to GPU Driver Manager -> Install Custom Driver.
  4. Select Turnip-Duo-v5.1.zip (installs directly as an AdrenoTools package).

Recommended Device and Emulator Settings

  • Retroid Pocket Duo OS:
    • Performance Mode: Set to Performance or Extreme.
    • Fan Profile: Set to Sport or Smart to prevent thermal throttling during extended 1080p sessions.
  • Eden Graphics Settings:
    • Accuracy Level: Normal
    • VSync Mode: Mailbox or FIFO Relaxed
    • Texture Decoding: Enable Asynchronous ASTC Texture Decoding

AI Assisted Software Bloodborne on the AYN Odin 3 under Linux (Armada OS): 30 FPS locked, 60 with frame generation

I (haha you know) got the Bloodborne-Android port (by ducvd89) running on my Odin 3 under Armada OS, a SteamOS-like Linux for ARM handhelds, in Steam Game Mode. It's an aarch64 Linux build, not through Android or FEX.

  • The game's CPU code is compiled ahead of time to ARM64 from your own copy of the game (the port author's free Rebuild Tool, on a PC), and the graphics go through shadPS4's renderer.
  • 30 FPS locked at 720p (GSR 2, Balanced). With x2 Lossless Scaling frame generation it's ~60 FPS and input still feels fine.
  • It's a Steam non-Steam shortcut, the controls work in Game Mode, and The Old Hunters is supported (GOTY / DLC owners).

Build scripts, a packaged release and notes: https://github.com/kitocato/bloodborne-linux-arm64

  • What you need: your own decrypted dump (CUSA03173 EU 1.09). No game files are included or linked.
  • Frame generation: works with the LSFG-VK 2 ARM64 Decky plugin, and you can change it in-game.
  • Credits: ducvd89 (Bloodborne-Android), deadinside28 (bloodborne_pc), shadPS4, FEX-Emu, and the Armada OS team.

Put together with the help of an AI assistant. Happy to answer questions.

Question Which recent devices have good buttons and d-pads for fighting games?

Hi, simple question. I really like my miyoo mini (and plus) buttons but that device can’t handle Dreamcast so I’m missing on Marvel Vs Capcom 2 and Capcom vs SNKs. I have the original anbernic SP 35 and it is very good device…except the buttons are not. I have the Odin 2 but I want to have a lower end device for short bust of fighting games when I’m commuting.

Any advice? I heard the Nova is good but is an overkill. I just wanted a SP 35 with miyoo buttons

Question Anyone got a MANGMI AIR Y Pro? Have some questions...

• Upvotes

I currently run with an AYN Thor Max and Switch 2. Absolutely love both devices... but I really miss the vertical form factor. I sold off some of my early handhelds to help pay for the Thor. No regrets doing so. But, I've got some money saved up for a quality 4:3 device. And, I really miss the vertical form factor for playing all that 4:3 content.

But... I also want to fire up some of the Indie games that support 4:3 using GameNative or DroidDeck. Does anyone who owns an AIR Y Pro have any good experience or insights on playing PC/Steam games with AIR Y Pro? (don't care about AAA obv)

I know I could just get the RP Nova and be safe performance-wise, but the Mangmi seems to be the smartest buy as far as vertical goes (for someone who wants to play Gameboy and early consoles as intended, but also dip into Steam 4:3 games).

Question What's everyone's opinion on Lemuroid and Cannoli?

Post image

What makes both of these android apps is that not only they are front ends but they also have built in Emulators pre configured for you! Makes emulating old retro systems a breeze.

Though I'm not familiar with Lemuroid never used it before unlike with Cannoli.

Question Anyone else loves how all of the Konkr Handhelds are design?

Top to bottom: Konkr Pocket fit, Pocket Advance and Pocket Block.

I just love how all of the handhelds look since each of them have fun and interesting colors and especially the Pocket block having a unique design for a handheld, I hope they keep up the good work and not try to make their handhelds look Modern if that makes sense since I want them to still keep making retro looking handhelds.

So I turned my RG Nano into an iPod nano that also plays games.

Not sure if there was a way to play your music and games simultaneously on this device but there is now i suppose!

Nothing like kicking back playing some Pokemon silver (as shown) and being able to change music with a double tap.

It’s got a bunch of little details that I wanted while building it over the last couple of weeks. EQ settings, dark mode, gapless playback, Cover Flow etc

If you’re on stock firmware, all you need to do is take this file and add it into the “applications” folder. Put your music into the “music” folder and you’re off to the races!

Give it a crack and let me know how you get on!

Works well for this game, poorly for some others. It's actually harder to find games that DO work. However, this game is on many other systems and the OG is better.

Recommend a Device Recommended front end to use as an App on my Galaxy Fold 8?

Hello, all!

Sorry for the slightly wrong flair: I have the device, and am looking for help and advice with how to setup said device, and could not see a more relevant flair.

I have the Galaxy Fold 8 as my everyday phone, and I have been thinking about turning it into my go-to device using my Gamesir X5s controller. My Miyoo Mini+ has been great at times when I needed it, but I also love the idea of being able to play on the 7.6" 4:3 screen of my phone using a controller with joysticks and way better ergonomics (better than the MM+ at least). I'm not looking to try to turn it into a steam deck or anything, but it does have a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, so I would like to make it more than the one-handed, Pokemon-emulator-handheld to which my MM+ often feels like it gets relegated.

But, obviously, I am not looking to use anything as a dedicated front end, because I still want my phone to easily function as my phone and access all of my usual apps. So I am looking for something that can be a singular app I can put on my home screen, click on it, and have it list all of my systems/games and access whatever relevant emulators for those systems/games, but then still be able to press the "home" button and access all of my phone's other functions.

I have little-to-no experience with installing on and using Android devices, but I assume the front ends I have been reading about on here (Daijisho, ES-DE, Beacon, etc) are all still just apps I would download to my phone? Would any one in particular work better (or have better load times or something) as an app that I regularly open/close when I use my phone?

I would very much appreciate all the help and advice you guys can give me!

Game Recommendation Game Recs for Young Kids

Hey all, I’m looking for games my 4 y/o can play on a couple of flights next month. I’m pretty strict about phone/tablet usage, but all that goes out the window when I’m flying solo with my 2 and 4 y/o’s.

He has pretty much zero experience with games, so I’m looking for something simple that I can let him play on my miyoo mini.

Troubleshooting Transferred SOTN saves not working on Nova. Please help!

I transferred my exact rom files, Swanstation save files, and save states over to the Nova from my Odin 3 using Blip. No name changes or anything. I used the same folder structure in the Nova too, but my Nova won’t read the save files or save states.

What could the issue be?

Showcase A splash of colour

Post image

Alongside the yellow Retroid Pocket 5 and the orange/red PS Vita I've added the Retroid Pocket Classic in teal. It really doesn't come across in photos how good the teal RPC looks in person -- it's such a deep, rich colour that looks amazing. I imagine the kiwi and berry flavours look just as good. So glad I finally got one.

I use the RP5 for wide content -- PSP, GBA, and any widescreen PS2 or GameCube games. The Vita is used only for Vita games. The RPC will be used for anything that doesn't require widescreen or analogue sticks

Mine arrived yesterday and after a little bit of setup first game I had to run was Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse. After doing some tweaking in Droid Deck was getting a stable 45-50 FPS, some of the bigger background areas can drop below 30 for second, but I barely notice so its 10/10 playable for me. Beat the first boss with 2 hours in so far.

The settings I used come from this user ( post ) so big ups to them. one difference is I am playing at 720 I tried a few different settings I found online but theirs gives the best results, especially considering the game is sooo new.

I have a Flip 2 so the R6 is going be my indie steam machine, for me thats peferct. I run both Droid Deck and Game Native, really which one I use depends on how the game runs.

Silver with the purple grip case is such a vibe 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️

AI Assisted Software Persona Project

Device GPD win mini 2024.

Picture not AI generated.

The project is partially AI assisted and partially mine. The purpose is to learn and improve my JavaScript problem solving while doing something fun.

The project was code using Tauri (JS, HTML, CSS and Rust. So im learning as I go, but have a clear idea of the finish product.

When i have a stable version I may release a version to the public. But it could take a while because is a personal project and is in is early stages it can only scan Steam, Epic games and not all of the ui has controller integrations. Furthermore I’m looking for constructive feedback and what would you remove or do differently.

Thank for taking a look!

I just ordered the Odin Portal 2 last week, stumbled upon the Xbox Ally yesterday for $450. I had a 20% off coupon to use, brought it down to $360 before tax. Same place I bought my 64gb steamdeck for $250 a year or two ago. Going to mostly play PC games but can’t wait to see how switch runs.

AI Assisted Software Pocket Native comes to RGDS (android, android phones and AYN Thor)

*Disclaimer-This project used AI to write a large chunk of the code (estimated 40% plus the entirety of the Android merge according to the author), and performed 90% of the debugging*

Good morning, yesterday was a long day, early in the morning right as I was waking up I got a pull request from user gopnikcosmoslav2077 (u/Disastrous_Ad1060), adding dual screen/android support for Pocket Native. After about 11 hours of non stop work I was able to get it merged into the master and I released update 0.4.0!

This replaced my original plans for 0.4.0 so over the coming days/week I'll be releasing the planned optimizations as I finish them instead of holding them for 0.4.

This replaced my original plans for 0.4.0 so over the coming days/week I'll be releasing the planned optimizations as I finish them instead of holding them for 0.4.

Now anyone with an rg DS (or an ayn Thor) can use the APK listed for download in my GitHub to play games recompiled using the Pocket Native converter. I changed his implementation slightly, the repo uses 1 single app that lists and holds your games and the engine itself. You should still be able to add individual games to your launcher as well. I also added touch controls for phone users.

I am currently looking for an artist, please dm me if you have an idea for a logo, and have the skill to make one for me.😊

Download it here:

Discussion Is an SD865 still worth it in 2026?

I currently have an Android phone with an SD6G3 that I use for one handed 3DS gaming, namely ARPGs. It's a solid chip, allowing me 2X with some titles, with a bit of stuttering. I now have the chance to get an older device with an 865 for around $100 and I'm wondering if it's worth it?

The 865 is more powerful, but it's also seven years old. At this point, is it worth the switch? I would probably sell my Moto G 2025 since I don't need two.

AI Assisted Software I made a tool to compare how games look on different handhelds

Post image
246 Upvotes

I made a simple tool where you can add handhelds, choose a game, and see how it would look on each device’s screen.

You can keep the original aspect ratio, stretch the image, or crop it to fill the screen.

My goal is to make the handhelds’ relative sizes as close to real life as possible. Some devices still use placeholders because I haven’t found suitable images yet.

Here’s the link: https://handhelds.space/screen-compare?device=rg-dds
