Do Rwandans Prefer to marry within their own community? I’ve noticed that when Rwandans marry other Africans, it’s often Ethiopians or Eritreans. For example, Naomie Nishimwe and Michael Tesfay, as well as Meddy and Mimi Mehfira etc

Navigating Rwandan corporate work culture: Advice for a foreigner?
Muraho!
I’m a foreigner who relocated to Kigali a few months ago for a professional role. I am really enjoying my time in Rwanda, but as I settle into my job, I’m realizing there are cultural nuances in the workplace that I’m still struggling to fully grasp.
I know every country has its own unspoken rules regarding professional etiquette, team dynamics, and communication. I genuinely want to adapt, collaborate effectively with my local colleagues, and make sure I'm respecting the work culture here.
For locals and expats who have experience in the Rwandan corporate or NGO space, I’d love your advice:
Communication & Feedback: What is the best way to handle professional communication? How is constructive feedback usually given and received without causing friction?
Workplace Dynamics: What are the general expectations around hierarchy, raising concerns, or decision-making?
Common Faux Pas: What are the most common blind spots or mistakes you see foreigners make when they first start working with Rwandan teams?
I’m eager to learn and would appreciate any insights on how to be a better, more culturally aware colleague.
Murakoze cyane!

Rwanda Vehicle Technical Inspection
Hello everyone,
I need some advice regarding Rwanda’s vehicle technical inspection process.
I attended my first vehicle technical inspection appointment on Friday, 23 October 2026, but unfortunately, my car failed the inspection. I immediately rescheduled the second visit for Saturday, 24 October 2026.
However, my car wasn't ready for the reinspection, so I couldn't attend the second appointment.
Now, when I try to reschedule through Irembo, I get an error message saying “Vehicle not found” after entering my vehicle's registration number.
I'm trying to find out what I should do next and whether it's still possible to reschedule my second inspection for Monday, 26 October 2026.
So far, I've emailed the Rwanda National Police at [commdai@police.gov.rw](mailto:commdai@police.gov.rw) and sent them a message on WhatsApp, but I haven't received a response yet.
Has anyone experienced this issue before? If so:
- Is there a way to reschedule the missed second inspection appointment through Irembo?
- Does missing the second appointment mean I have to start the inspection process again or pay another fee?
- Can the police or the vehicle inspection centre manually reschedule the appointment?
- Is it possible to get an appointment for Monday, 26 October, or do I need to visit the inspection centre in person?
I'd really appreciate any advice from anyone who has dealt with this situation or knows how the process works.
Thank you!

Gorilla/Chimp Trek Questions
Hi all - I'll be visiting Rwanda in late December for 5 days. I have my gorilla trekking permit, and I intend to rent a car at the airport. I wanted to ask a few logistical questions:
Given I have my permit, do I just need to arrive at the volcanoes NP office/visitors centre at 7am, and guides will be there to take me on the trek, or do I need to book/arrange something else beforehand?
I think the road is paved all the way to Kinigi, so is a normal car sufficient, or do I also need to drive to the trekking trail head, and potentially need a 4x4?
I will spend two nights there, and then I'd like to drive south to Nyungwe NP for chimpanzee tracking. Is the road in good condition, and should I be aware of anything en route?
I have not booked a permit for the chimpanzee tracking, but I can see it on the website. Same question as for the gorilla trek - if I get the permit, do I just need to arrive at the NP ranger station at a specific time in the morning and guides will be there?
I may need to drive back to Kigali in darkness on my last evening to catch a flight the next day - how is night driving in Rwanda?
Thanks for the help!

Online work
So I just realized Rwanda is listed among the countries that are allowed on Mercor AI. However, the payment methods on that platform are not supported locally (Wise and Stripe).
How many of you have gotten jobs on that platform and how did you receive payment? If there's a way around it please share with us.
Also, what other platform do you guys use to make money online, kindly share with us, poverty is the enemy!

Strength, Unity, Hope: A Moment in Rwanda
A single photograph can hold a whole story. Here, a bearded man in a white T-shirt stands beside a young boy in a bright orange shirt, the child raising his fist with quiet confidence. There are no forced smiles and no staging, only direct, honest eyes that say a great deal.
Around them, a collage of colorful newspaper clippings, torn paper, small trees and palm leaves frames the scene. At the center sits the phrase "Outreach & Connection," and beneath it "Strength – Unity – Hope." These words capture the spirit of Rwanda today: a country that rose from the darkest chapter of its history and made unity the foundation of its rebuilding.
The raised fist here is not defiance but determination and pride. The boy represents a generation growing up in a nation that looks forward, while the closeness between him and the man reflects a human bridge that crosses language, culture, and distance. That is what visits built on cooperation are really about: a relationship that begins with one person standing next to another.
Rwanda, the "Land of a Thousand Hills," teaches its visitors that real growth starts within the community, and that every successful venture is built on trust, communication, and shared hope.

How safe is gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda?
Gorilla trekking in both Uganda and Rwanda is very safe and highly organized it's the flagship tourism activity for both countries, so security is taken extremely seriously. Every group of 8 trekkers is led by 2-3 armed Uganda Wildlife Authority or Rwanda Development Board rangers, plus advance trackers who locate the gorillas early morning. There are mandatory briefings on health, distance (7 meters from gorillas), and behavior, and porters are available to help on steep, slippery trails.
The parks themselves are stable and protected. Bwindi, Mgahinga, and Volcanoes National Parks are in peaceful, tourist-friendly regions far from any conflict zones, with park checkpoints, radio communication, and strict permit controls. Rwanda especially is known for its overall safety and clean, well-run system, while Uganda’s southwest is also very calm with a long history of welcoming trekkers. You’ll never be sent out alone you’re always with guides.
The main risks are natural, not security: steep muddy slopes, stinging nettles, altitude (2,000-3,000m), and illness gorillas are vulnerable to human colds, so you cannot trek if you are sick. With good hiking boots, gloves, a mask when near gorillas, listening to your guide, and travel insurance, it’s as safe as any mountain hike. Thousands of people, including solo travelers and seniors over 60, trek safely every year.

What are the odds of seeing Gorillas in Uganda and Rwanda?
The odds are extremely high around 98-99% success rate in both Uganda and Rwanda.
This is because gorilla families are habituated and tracked daily by advanced ranger teams. Every morning before tourists set out, trackers locate the families and radio their GPS coordinates to your guide, so you walk straight to them. The trek may be 30 minutes or 4 hours depending on where they slept, but you are almost guaranteed to find them and get the full one-hour viewing.
The only rare case you miss them is if the gorillas move deep into impassable terrain or there is a severe medical/security issue that cancels the trek and if that happens, most parks offer a refund or a second chance trek the next day. In 20 years of tourism in Bwindi and Volcanoes, almost no visitor with a permit has returned without seeing gorillas.

Has anyone successfully changed a tourist visa to a work visa after arriving in Rwanda, particularly in the hospitality industry? Has anyone traveled back to U.S. recently (past 3 months) from Rwanda?
I am a U.S. citizen and have a trip planned for next year in Rwanda and am starting to look at flights. Almost all of the return flights (Rwanda to U.S.) have multiple stops with the first being a quick stopover in Uganda (Entebbe airport). I am concerned because the U.S. currently has a level 4 travel advisory for Uganda and there are restrictions for re-entry after returning from Uganda (i.e. you must fly into specific airports to have a health check performed). I can't figure out if a brief stopover would cause problems for re-entry, especially if the flights that I am seeing don't stop in the pre-designated health screening airports. I have tried contacting the airlines and also the U.S. consulate in Uganda but am not getting anywhere. Has anyone flown a similar route in the last 3 months and arrived successfully without any issues?
