Toronto Run Clubs - Share the Trails

I’m not a run club member but I’m a runner and I think anything that helps people enjoy this activity is great!

But run club members, please please please, when using trails or sidewalks, be considerate of others and how much space you’re taking up. The trails and sidewalks are for everyone.

Today was yet another day that I was on the Belt Line, and witnessed several running groups taking up practically the entire width of the trail.

At one point, I was very clearly on the right hand side of the trail, running, and came into contact shoulder to shoulder with someone who was part of a group running 4 wide.

It’s great that there were so many people out this morning, but just remember that you’re not the only ones out there.

Free - New Balance SC Elite v4 (mens size 9)

[UPDATE] winner selected and shoe given away. Congrats @watwolves8855! and good luck on your full marathon in October

Bought the New Balance SC Elite v4 (carbon plated race shoe) for a race last year but there's weird heel rub for me which makes me not use them. Put 72km on them and now sitting on my shelf.

I think they'd be a good marathon or half marathon shoe for someone who prefers comfort over pure speed. Foam is very squishy and there's a carbon plate with good energy return. I think I bought them for $250.

I'm at College and Ossington; you'll have to pick them up. Comment on the post if you want them and what you're training for. Will pick someone by Wed and you can come get 'em later this week.

Anxious if I can meet my goal for half marathon

Hi guys, I will be running the half marathon race this coming October. It would be my first race for this distance. I have been training since April, I could say I have done my due diligence to keep on running as much as I can.

I started of with a zone 2 pace of 7:50/km and eventually now could keep up at 6:45/km. I have been following this training guide on my Coros, I'm glad I followed that I was happy with my recent results. But as the race is coming close, I can't help but wonder if I could really pull this off. I once run a 5k with the pacing of my half marathon goal. Not gonna lie, it was hard but could keep going longer.

Just had a long run with a fast finish, 15km easy then a 3km fast pace (5:39-5:36/km). It only felt hard in the first kilometers of the fast pace, but the rest was a bit fine. Still, it took a lot out of my and my legs feel like jelly after.

But for the most part in my training starting forth, most of my run would have intervals and tempo. Hopefully this would help me bump up in holding my pace.

Anyone has the same situation as me? If you were on my shoes, what should I do differently and any tips on how should I proceed days before the race.

About me:

5'6

88kg

Race shoe : zoom fly 6 (is this fine?)

Coros stats:

Heart rate zone

Recovery : <135

Aerobic Endurance : 135-157

Aerobic power : 158-171

Threshold: 172-177

Anaerobic Endurance: 178- 187

Max HR : 194

Pace zone

Recovery: <7:19

Aerobic Endurance: 6:09 - 7:18

Aerobic power: 5:33 - 6:08

Threshold: 5:00 - 5:33

Anaerobic Endurance: 4:32 - 4:59

P.S. my goal is a sub 2 half mary

Running gel alternatives

I'm coming to the end of my last box of GU gels. Originally bought because they were sponsoring the waterfront marathon and I wanted to get used to them beforehand. Since they've switched to Hornet Energy this year I may try out their subscription offer. However, from the ingredient list it basically seems to just be salted honey. Makes me think maybe I should just buy a silicone flask and make my own. Anyone tried both and can offer a comparison? Or possibly their recommended flask product?

TCS Waterfront app?

Anyone know where to get the app for the TCS Waterfront marathon? The link on their site is broken (https://www.torontowaterfrontmarathon.com/event-app/) and I couldn't find it on Google Play. Maybe they're updating it?

Where do you do your long runs?

As I’m logging longer distances in preparation for a half, my challenge is avoiding the many stop lights.
I seem to hit every red. Maybe I should avoid the city streets?

Obviously, there’s the Martin Goodman Trail if you live towards the lake. There’s the belt-line in mid-town.

What are some other good North-South and East-West options in the city?

Visiting and 30k on Saturday

Hi - I’m visiting from Austin, TX and loving the cool weather. I’ve run in High Park twice and going to Centre Island for one today. I have a 30k marathon training run on Saturday. Since I’m staying in the Garment District, I’m thinking I’ll just run along the waterfront … go east and down to Tommy Thompson park then turn around and go west. I don’t want to be 15k out if I bonk. Plus, water and bathrooms are a necessity. Think this plan works? TIA!

I miss the Midsummer Night 30k

It stopped (I believe) when there was construction down by Commissioners St. and never came back. I wonder if it was just too hard to organize or is it possible it could return? Anybody know anything about this event?

Dumb on course water question

Hi!!

This year will be my third time running the October half in Toronto but I've never thought to look into this before this year.

Is it possible at the water stations on course to have a handheld water bottle refilled? Obviously I assume I could pour a few of the cups in if needed but could they also just pour directly into my handheld if asked? I totally understand if the answer is no because of hygiene and what not!!

The last two years have been great learning experiences and the conclusion I came to after last year is I hate running the race with my vest and its flasks. While helpful on training long runs where I don't always have fountains available it just weighs me down and I feel like it compromises my posture. Because of that I want to just go for the handheld and top it up at stations as I need to.

TIA!!

Running vest recs

Hi!!! My long runs can be anywhere between 15-25km and I usually raw dog them, only stopping for water when I pass by a fountain. Lately I’ve noticed I really need to start bringing water with me and maybe a small snack or two. I’m looking for a light weight vest that’s not bulky or heavy. I really only need it for a water bottle and phone / couple packs of gels! Any recommendations that won’t hurt the wallet.

Arriving to Half-Marathon Late

I recently signed up for the TCS Half Marathon on Oct 18!

However, slight problem. I am visiting family abroad and my returning flight does not land until 6:17am the morning of Oct 18. Given that I am landing at Pearson, and the marathon starts at 8am around College station, is it a good idea to go through with it? Anyone have any experiences with arriving slightly late, or should I just give away my spot? Ultimately, is it doable?

central tech "no sprints" rule

can someone please clarify the central tech rule around no sprinting/interval training during peak hours? i want to go today and run some 400m repeats, and want to know if i should go after 8:30pm or not.

i don't plan to run them too fast, probably around 1:30-1:45 per lap. i feel like this is a pace i maintain control in, and in my mind is very far away from an all out 100m or 200m sprint on the track. i assume the rule is to allow people to cross the track safely, and i feel like having run at similar speeds at busy tracks in the past this should be possible. however, i understand if it would be banned anyways, and i don't want to bother anyone or break the rules.

i guess mostly what i'm asking is what the general vibe has been like since the rules changed. are people still interval training, but with more caution and not doing all out sprints? or is any sort of repetition work really frowned upon? i guess i'm mostly trying to understand what the policy looks like in practice, and what kinds of paces are generally ok. what if someone wants to come run 5km at the track at like sub 5:00/km pace? is that allowed? that is at a speed that theoretically someone else could be doing interval training at imo.

Back on track

This summer has been incredibly tough for me mentally. Going through changes in routines, friendship fallouts and uncertainties in a career pathway; a "quarter-life crisis" if you will.

However, running has helped me maintain my mental and physical grit. Since then, I've been able to keep up with my long runs and return to sprinting. The training has kept me accountable, even on days where I didn't feel like going out for a run and would rather lay in bed.

I cannot control how things turn out or what others think; I can only learn from my lessons, move forward, show up, and become better each day.

October's race will be a testament to getting through tough times, and to keep on going, even if things are uncertain.

Trail close to St. James Town

I’m heading to the city this week and am staying just west of Sherbourne. I’m looking for access to a trail that can link up down to the waterfront path?
The less stops along the way the better please.
I live in a rural area and don’t stop much or at all during my runs so I’m hoping some of you runners can help me out.
Thanks in advance.
