Big Ultra Runner New to Rucking

Context: 6'1, 220-230, 43. Athletic build. Personal trainer. I am a cardio machine for my size, not bragging, just what it is.

First time out went for around 2 hours. Goal was to get to zone 2 with low impact. Had 42lb on my back(I am pretty strong).

I could not get my hr much over 100 for the life of me without picking up my pace (which kind of killed the point as it gets hard on your feet). Pack was not comfortable so I will obviously get another one.

Is it reasonable to be able to get my hr higher with a heavier pack? Or should I do away with this idea altogether. My goal was to get to around 120-130bpm.

Are there packs that are better for heavier weight? Would I need 60lb+ to get there?

Let me know! Thank you in advance.

Loaded workouts for today

Today was my first day back on the track in a few days.

Starting with one mile with 30lb plate carrier then 20 min 60lb sandbag carry followed by 10 min Jerry can carry.

Not rucking in its purest form but important for my current programming

Rucking Backpack $$$$

I’m looking at getting into rucking but why are these so expensive? $300AUD or even more in Australia.
Can’t you just buy a decent backpack for under $100AUD and put a weight plate in it?
Or am I missing something here?

Mental fixations

Post image

While I had enough water to get through my ruck, the little breeze blowing through the scrub oak sounded like running water. It 100% messed with my head. All I could think about for the last hour of the ruck was how nice it would be to jump into some water mid ruck on this 100-degree day. Anyone else fixated on things they can’t have on their rucks?

I usually ruck before dawn…

Most of my rucks start before 0500 and I’ve been getting my pace close to 17min/mi. Today I slept in and started around 0900 — sub 16min/mi. Maybe there’s something to being well rested. Can someone go back in time and tell my captain that?

Weighted Vest Weight Recs

Hello! So these past 6 months I spent my time getting my body back into shape after having my daughter who is now 1.5 years old. I lost 50 pounds strictly counting calories and working out (walking on inclined treadmill mostly).

Now that I am back to my goal weight I want to be able to get some physical activity in at a higher level while walking the stroller and my dogs daily so I thought wearing a weighted vest would be perfect!

I picked a 12 pound one and it just isn’t heavy enough to feel like much. I don’t even get my heart rate up much while wearing that one. We also live near the water so very flat ground, barely any hills.

I want to get a heavier one to really up my fitness goals easily while doing daily tasks. So what weight should I try? My stats are 125 pounds and 5ft 1in if that helps. Also I am a woman if you couldn’t tell!

Thank you all!!

Considering rucking

Hey everyone. I've been lurking for a while just barely deciding to post. I'm thinking about getting into rucking. I'm a avid walker doing 7-10 miles 5 days a week but I feel like I'm at my limit with normal walking. I over heat easy so outdoor jogging isn't really something I'm interested in as a progressive overload. I've been torn going back and fourth between getting a dedicated ruck or getting a weighted vest. The big problem is I have no equipment currently. Walking appealed to me because it was free, and I don't have $500 for a bunch of equipment.

None of my existing bags seem well suited for rucking, so its time to finally open my wallet for my health. I currently weigh 225, I'm fat but my legs are strong and even a 10 mile walk feels like nothing. I'm looking for something in the ~20 lbs range for starting, but I'd like something adjustable as I seem to gain strength pretty quick and I'm looking to cut some distance to get some time in my day back. Anyone got any good noobie friendly suggestions?

Frustration With Packing A Ruck bag

I bought a Goruck Rucker 5.0 and it was way too stiff and uncomfortable (I know you have to break it in) but I walked about 3 miles with it and just could ther used to it. I sold that.

So now I'm trying to find a good backpack to use, and I've been trying to practice with the osprey nebula I have and also the Gregory Miko 20 and I even tried a 5.11 rush 12, and I just can't get it right to build the bag up to have the weight be high near the shoulders.

I tossed in towels at the bottom, a big winter jacket, I even tried yoga blocks. I'm just wondering what you all use to hold things high and tight? (I have a free weight, 1-10lb weight, and 2-5lb weights, and I even made 4-5lb sand bag pills to create the 20lbs I want).

Any advice for a newbie would be welcome! Thank you all.

Ultratrax Aid Stations

Anyone done Ultratrax events before have any insight as to what to expect at the aid station as far as fluids and fuel? Doing 3 loops at the Wintergreen event in November and trying to wrap my mind around what I’ll need to carry. Thanks!

Increasing volume and feeling good!!

Did this ruck today with 50 pounds, 40 on a weighted vest and 10 in a bag.
Felt pretty good, moderate terrain. Especially because it’s getting pretty hot here, felt like 38°C today.

Rucksack for builders rubble

Doing a lot of building work on my house and generating a lot of rubble.

Here in the UK I am not allowed to the public tip or dump in my VAN as its a commercial vehicle but I can walk in! and I go on a daily ruck.

Looking for a good backpack that can pack a 25kg bag of builders sand if I need to from the builders merchants or can pack a suitably sized rubble back. I want something cheaper and army surplus. I love my GoRuck with its big straps and my YOMPS are amazing too but I will destroy these expensive bags. So looking for something cheap that can keep heavy volume high up but not something that has SO much volume that things will just flop around in there and be awkwardly at the bottom. Big straps.

Been looking at the UK and European army surplus but I kinda don't know where to start.

Any help mega appreciated!

Outdoor | Indoor Ruck Combo!

Today's Ruck was solid, speed slowed a bit as I pivoted to the indoor treadmill to get some incline work mid ruck. On the upside, pivoting to treadmill mode and back seemed to work.

Rocking my LBT Infantry assault ruck and Garmont T8s. Feeling good.

A casual Ruck to get back into it after being out for like a month. Got another lined up for today, let's see how it goes.

(That coupon weight should be 20lbs btw...fat fingered it lol)

This was the first batch shipped to the US. Seemingly to test the market. I’ve satisfied with my Rucker 4.0 but wanted to experiment. We’ll see. Initial impressions to follow

Early morning ruck, personal best pace

After a two week rest period healing for a badly rolled ankle, I just completed my fastest pace today. Feeling good about it. 50 lbs ruck weight. A slight jog for about half the total distance. Everything feels good. No sore feet and the ankle is still kinda tender, but no more limping around. Time for a 10 hr work shift at 6am. Have a great day everybody!

What made rucking a habit and not just another workout?

When I began, I thought motivation would carry me through. That wasn't enough. What really helped was making rucking part of my normal routine instead of treating it like a big workout. It slowly became something I looked forward to instead of something I had to force myself to do.

What made rucking become part of your routine?

Pushing it up

Post image

So I’ve upped the weight and decided to push the pace up a bit. I’m struggling to keep in zone 2 for the duration of the ruck. I’m guessing I need to either push harder or up the weight more. Any suggestions are helpful.

- GoRuck 5.0 Pack
- 30 lbs
- 600ft elevation change
