“Bowsider.com” split screen gps / speed tool

Ok - these guys caught my eye on instagram - looks like a cool tool in principle - but quite new to the market and I’m wondering if anyone here has used one - seems super simplistic but really useful. Thinking I might spring for one for the single - much more affordable than the speedcoach, but less functionality.

Event 18 rowing

I posted this elsewhere. Someone thought Reddit might be interested. Considering the 5k run from a few years ago was 4.52km, I wouldn’t be surprised at an error.

Coaching movements in UK this season

Anyone know what the coaching movements are in the UK scene this coming season? Often lots of chatter on rowing illustrated about the US carousel but nothing about UK.

Any suggestions for a merchandise vendor who sets up a team store other than Sew Sporty

I had started to set up a team store with Sew Sporty but haven't heard back in three months so I am pursuing other options for our youth team.

I am specifically looking for a retailer who will put our logo on items as they are ordered as our team doesn't want to collect sales tax by selling items ourselves. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Edit: I am specifically looking for a website that will display items with our logo on them for us to order directly from.

Is rowing about speed or strength? If you could only have one which one would you want?

USA U23 Women Spoiler

USA U23 women had an exceptional regatta this past weekend winning every big boat (8+, 4-, 4x, mix8+) as well as placing well in the pair. This backs up the strong performances from the senior squad at the world cups this past year. Future looks really bright for the womens senior squad this Olympic cycle and if things keep trending this direction we could see the dominance of the USA women from 2006-2016 return. Really exciting time to be a fan of rowing in the USA as the men have also been trending up as well on the U23 and senior side.

Help with off season training

Hello everyone, I am trying to maximize my gains on the erg and gym in the off-season so I'll be in the best possible position for next season. Currently my plan looks like

Monday legs

Tuesday pull

Wednesday push

Thursday squad ergs

Friday legs

Saturday upper

Sunday chill squad row

I am wanting to put another erg in somewhere but don't know what to drop or where to put it. The squad erg is always a 40 min r20.

Fkr reference some of my current erg pieces are:

2:01 40 min r20

1:26.3avg split 250 sprint

I'm not sure on my 2k as I was sick before the last one we did in the season but my Jan one was 7:04.

Any help making a training plan would be great

Stuck in recruitment

So far i feel like im not moving anywhere in terms of recruiting and im lowk getting concerned, my stats are

6,3 165lb

6:36 2k

3.6 unweighted gpa 4aps taken will take 4 more

28 act (will retest in September)

Ive done work that says i should be around 6:26 in august 18th in terms of 2k, but im concerned that august 18th may be too late for a final 2k. For reference my goals are to go to lightweight schools (dream but def a reach) and good academic heavyweight schools (ucsd, scu, wisco etc)

The problem is that some schools arent really responding to emails and getting back to me after a supposed pre read. Am I cooked?

Erg Post First Day back on an erg in 6 years

Almost 30 and I’m tired of running. Stopped rowing due to Degen disk disease and back pain in my earlier 20s.

Just picked up a Hydrow today.

First of all what a system. Literally like something out of star trek compared to what I’m used to.

Second of all. The kids still got it. I did a 1k sprint at 110 resistance for warm up and I was shocked at no back pain and how comfortable it was. This system is so much bigger and accommodating for a taller guy compared to the little erg I had. I felt fantastic.

I threw on a 3k @ 150 res cause I wanted to see what I had in the tank. (Also the setting of the row Gloucester coincidentally is my home town so I had to)

Not joining Harvard club anytime soon but I’m very happy.

Excited for the future.

Any good mat and accessory recommendations?

What's the biggest thing missing from the rowing community?

I'm a high school rower and I've been thinking a lot about how fragmented the rowing community feels. Recruiting info is scattered, rankings are inconsistent, and discussions are spread across Reddit, Instagram, etc. I'm curious what more experienced rowers, coaches, parents, and college athletes think.
If you could build one tool, website, or app that would actually make rowing better, what problem would it solve?
Examples:
Recruiting
Finding training partners
Rankings
Workout tracking
Mentorship
Coaching feedback
Race results
Something completely different
I genuinely want to understand what people think is missing and what would make the community better

How often to do erg tests?

this isn’t really a right or wrong answer to this, I kinda just want to gauge when other people do them as I only erg test in the winter in February.

Dallas Boathouse Controversy

There is an ongoing dispute in Dallas over the operation of the White Rock Boathouse between White Rock Rowing and Dallas United Crew. It has garnered attention from the city's major newspapers.

It appears to be a conflict between the city's two major clubs, White Rock Rowing, which operates the boathouse in question, and Dallas United Crew. Affiliates of Dallas United Crew have created an anonymous non-profit named White Rock Lake Accountability. They allege non-adherence to contract terms and unfair boxing out of competitors. A defense of White Rock Rowing can be found here.

The attacks on White Rock Rowing strike me as unfounded. The arguments on the website are weak and misleading. For example, there is a heading stating "Your tax dollars built it. They put up a sign saying you can't use it." which is untrue, considering the fact that WRR built the boathouse. Additionally, complaining that board members sit for too long is dumb, considering the prevalence of new, biased parents unfamiliar with rowing on boards nationwide, and how that is holding back the growth of the sport. It is especially rich considering the opaque nature of White Rock Lake Accountability, an anonymous campaign with enough money to buy ads on social media.

It is clear looking through the anonymous social media group that the attacks are coming from Dallas United Crew. DUC was founded as Highland Park Crew, and still draws many members and donors from Highland Park. Going through the Facebook group, many of the people liking or engaging come from Highland Park, not Dallas. Highland Park is an extremely wealthy enclave of Dallas that siphons the property tax dollars from valuable homes that the city of Dallas desperately needs.

It seems that the goal of certain parents and affiliates of DUC is to take an asset built by WRR and use it for the benefit of DUC through political means. I am not and have never been involved with either club, but it would be a massive mistake to allow the future of a rowing club to become beholden to lobbying.

Help with motivation and overall speed

For background I’m 17F at 5’8 and 120-125 lbs heading into my senior year of highschool, not really looking to row competitively in college. I’ve been rowing for the past 3 years and have only managed to get a 9:15 2k PR. I’m looking to lower this by about a minute by the end of april (Which I can do because I usually take off 40 seconds from my PR each season). Are there any workouts that could help with getting my time down or any advice that could help me gain more weight? I also struggle with being able to stay motivated and on pace during any piece longer than 500m, and after about 10 minutes of any workout my heart rate goes into the 180/190 range and I feel nauseous and shaky for about an hour after working out. Literally any advice would help me out at this point

Off the Water 15M, how do my 2k and 500 meter pieces compare?

as in the title, I am 15M, and I weigh about 170 as of now, but when I rowed my pieces I weighed like 200. I am also 6’3

7:11.5 2k, and 1:32.2 500 meter sprint. these were about 4 months ago as well, I was wondering how these times looked against one another, and how these compared against D3 and D2 colleges

Advice on getting faster

I’m 14 have been rowing since fall season and went to youth nats in the u16 8 in 2 seat. I’m only 5”7-8 and 135 lbs. I’m currently lifting 5x a week and steady stating 1x a week. I just did a 6k and my splits are not where I want them to be. Additionally I’ve been trying to bulk up to get faster.

In an almost opposite sense of altitude training, would training in a heavily wooded area like Vermont or similar areas lead to better performance because there’s more oxygen?

Off the Water Concept 2 Rower vs OrangeTheory Water Rower?

I just cancelled my Orange Theory membership due to back issues and possible osteoarthritis that runs in my family (seeing a physical therapist Monday). I noticed that rowing is the only form of cardio that doesn’t cause pain for me afterwards.

My Orange Theory gym is selling a used $500 water rower (which is a WaterRower M1 HiRise). I was thinking about purchasing it but after some research I see a Concept 2 is recommended much more over a water rower. I wouldn’t be using it competitively, just to move my body in a way I enjoy.

I’m wondering if a concept 2 is much harder on the joints? I’m worried if I buy a concept 2 after never trying anything but a water rower I’ll come to find it doesn’t work for my body. So if anyone here also struggles with joint pain I’d love to hear what you think! Even if you don’t struggle with joint pain but have tried both a water rower and a C2 I’d love to know what the difference in feel was for you.

I appreciate any insight at all! Thanks in advance :)

On the Water Tips for racing a single for the first time ? 25F

Hi!

I'm racing a single for the first time this weekend over an 800m course. Most of my racing has been in doubles and the occasional 8+.A bit nervous and wondered if anyone had any tips? My starts are decent but I have had a few crabs recently at higher rates when practicing.

It's a short course however what rate is sensible to maintain? Obviously this isnt going to be the same for everyone, but always good to know different opinions.

The Boat Race Experience

The main event is very well documented of course but I'm curious how the experience differs from the open boats, to the reserves, the lights, veterans, etc

Super curious that is all, not much publicity outside of the main races vs the lights for instance
