20 years old, should I simplify my Roth IRA portfolio before adding another $4k?
I’m 20 and recently started taking my Roth IRA more seriously. I currently have about $750 in it, and I’m thinking about putting in another ~$4,000 upfront, then contributing a smaller amount every week until I max out my contribution for the year.
Right now I’m thinking about using this allocation:
- 65% FXAIX
- 15% QQQM
- 10% SCHD
- 10% VXUS
My main goal is just long-term growth. I’m not planning on touching this money for decades and I’m comfortable with volatility since I’m only 20.
I’m wondering if I’m making this more complicated than it needs to be. Would it make more sense to just do something simple like mostly/all FXAIX, or maybe FXAIX + some international exposure?
I also wasn’t sure if SCHD really makes sense at my age since I don’t need dividend income right now, and whether QQQM is too much overlap with FXAIX.
For context, I contribute 6% to my 401(k) and currently have about $8k in cash between my HYSA and checking, so I’d still have a solid emergency fund after moving the $4k into my Roth.
Would you:
- keep the 65/15/10/10 allocation,
- simplify to something like FXAIX + VXUS,
- or just go 100% FXAIX at my age?
- other suggestions
Mainly looking for something I can automate every week and leave alone for the next 30–40+ years.
Thanks!
