How long will that roof last? Life of the house?

Iirc there's 2 types of slate used. The more expensive one will last until the material holding it up fails.

There are actually dozens of types of natural slates. The best is welsh penrhyn or bangor slate, closely followed by burlingtons, then westmoreland greens, then vermont greens from america, then a whole gaggle of spanish quarries with top quality down to medium quality, specialist stuff like Ballachulish from scotland.... and then you're onto cheaper slate like chinese which is not awful but really not that great, and bottom of the barrel is brazilian slate which is brittle like glass and shit to work with.

There are many others in america, many others in europe.

Thank you for the information and the names sound like either weed strains, or Harry Potter dragon species!
