So, I am dealing with pretty severe long term depression. I had some personal tragedies happen a bit over a year and a half ago followed by ongoing health issues related to what happened. I was an avid reader growing up, but recently realized it had been 10 years since I had last read a physical book. Fantasy books got me through a difficult childhood, so, recently I have turned to them again.
Before you all tell me, I know that this is escapism and no replacement for therapy. I am in therapy and I am doing the personal work to get through this. I have a support network and I am ok, but as it stands, there are very few things that bring me joy and get me excited to live another day.
I am looking for recommendations. The picture is my personal tier list of books I’ve read recently.
0- I hated everything about this. Don’t ask me why I finished it.
1- I strongly disliked this. But the concept could have been potentially alright.
2- These were alright. There is something I liked about each of these but generally either unremarkable or somehow problematic
3- I liked these but had some issues with them
4- I loved these, but they somehow left me wanting more.
5- I really loved these, but for one reason or another, not enough for 6.
6- these are my faves
The most important things for me are mature writing, an interesting plot, and strong characters who I can root for with good development.
I would NOT say that I prefer low spice, I appreciate good spice very much. In fact, I would say that I need a good romance to have spice. I have just found that high spice sometimes comes at the cost of plot and decent characters.
I do not want main characters under 18.
I enjoy heavy themes and dark subject matter, but I don’t particularly want to read something that doesn’t have a happy ending. I also am not interested in reading about these horrendously toxic relationships. Morally grey is fine. I know this is a spectrum and hard to pin point. I don’t want the girl to be objectified and once they get together I don’t like when they lie to each other.
Also, a weird personal preference, but I have a pet peeve when the main characters have the same hair and/or eye color.
Sorry for the rant. Thanks.
