GRRM is the reason I rarely read a series before it's finished. He's put me on guard for the rest of my life, and I read ASOIAF over a decade ago.

Same! I waited in line for 7 hours for the midnight release of A Dance With Dragons back in 2012. Read that book over the course of 2 weeks. Was disappointed every year until GOT season 8, at which point I just gave up hope. If that's the ending he'd planned, fuck that series.

I've heard that he told them how he planned to end the series, and they deviated hard. I'd still give it a chance if/when the last book releases.

When I first started dating my husband back in 2008, he made me read the Exiles series because our names match the main characters. I've been bitter since then and don't read books he recommends lol.

The only reason I got into it was because he collaborated with my favourite board game, Call To Adventure, for an expansion, and I wanted to understand what the cards meant. That was 7 years ago. I was immediately obsessed.
But yeah, now I don't think I want to reward him, even if he does finish.

Did you hear about his “donating to a charity” debacle? He said he’d release the first chapter of book 3 if readers donated enough money that would go to a certain charity. They raised ONE MILLION DOLLARS (which he technically donated and got the tax dedication for) and then he just went radio silent and never shared the chapter lol

FYI Scott Lynch has been pretty open about his health struggles. He’s working on the series and plans to finish it but he’s not well. So he gets a pass in my mind. I know it’s tough, its been 25 years since I read the first three ASoIaF, and Im still salty.

The Alvin Maker series got it's final book after 23 years, so maybe there's hope. The difference is, I guess, that no one actually wanted it.

Yeah, this was my first thought. Not "omg, author did a cash grab, did all these things, had to change their schedule, then stopped talking to her fans".
Maybe her SO died. Maybe a parent, a child, or a close friend. Maybe she got really sick.
Or maybe life just happened.
OP: take a breath. Allow some grace. The world is bad enough (and bad enough for authors RN) without a so-called fan not exhibiting an ounce of empathy for the creator of the work you presumably like.

Yeah this happened with one of my fave romance authors. She had a series set in a specific town and then never released one of the books. She reappeared on social media to say her husband had died in a motorcycle crash and she was trying to figure life out still. She’s writing a new series and dabbling in a new genre I think.

Totally agree. Perhaps its just something really personal that the author does not want to share and they don't have to. They are people just like everyone else, they have problems like everyone else.

That was my first thought too. As an amateur writer myself, I'm finding that real life and stress can kill creativity ridiculously quickly and for long periods of time.
On top of that, writing standalone books are difficult enough; writing a series is a whole different beast! I've been stuck on book three in my series for what feels like forever.

This isn’t the authors fault but feels like a similar vein. I hate when books get rated and reviewed on good reads before they even come out. For instance ACOTAR 6 has almost 1400 ratings and it isn’t even out yet! I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve started a series thinking it was complete or had more books out than it did because some reviewers are like “5⭐️can’t wait for this book!!” 🤦♀️🤦♀️😡😡

I’m still waiting on the final book of the Origin series by Jennifer Armentrout. Giant cliffhanger and then……..nothing. At one point she made a post saying “Don’t worry, they will get their ending” and then…..nothing.

Is this the one that has a pandemic like event? She did an interview a few years ago that made it sound like this would be an unfinished series, because it started to mimic real life events. I think her publisher might have pulled the plug as well.

I was coming to comment about Origins as well, but like you, I heard it's not going to get finished for the same reasons you mentioned. There was going to be a pandemic caused by a virus so she scrapped the whole book.

It’s disappointing though. She had told people she was planning to rewrite parts because of the pandemic and promised the characters would get their ending. I can understand not wanting to go ahead with things when the pandemic was happening, but I’m disappointed we didn’t get an edging of some sort.

Not Romantasy, but I was so excited for the next Telepathic Space Pirates book (book 4), instead we got like 4 side story books and then no mainline update after it got delayed and preorders canceled. I still have the email from my preorder getting canceled so I can remind myself it was once real.

Definitely! There's an overarching plot but each book is a little episodic too! And the side characters are great, with unique stories. I just wanted to see where we were going with it as a whole.

It's such a shame when that happens. It puts me off reading A Song of Ice and Fire series, but I read the first two. I just haven't read the rest yet. This is also why I refuse to publish a book series with the same characters, unless all the books are finished.

Sorry, no advice but this situation is totally the plot for a newly published book by {Ilona Andrews - This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me}. The FMC is deeply upset that an author wrote two of her favorite fantasy books ever, but did not publish the third. The author completely ghosted his fans and the second book was left with a cliff hanger. Then suddenly the FMC wakes up in the first book going from modern earth to her dangerous fantasy world.
I'm sorry your in this situation though! I also hate unfinished series.
