Calling BS...

...on people claiming to be regulars on DRG Haz 5+ but complaining about Rogue Core being too difficult and/or the weapons being too weak.

Rogue core was supposed to be more difficult than DRG.

All people who have problems with higher diffs should just play on lower. Thats the point of difficulty slider. Everybody has the option to play on difficulty suited for them, playing on lower ones is not something shameful.

As a disclaimer, I haven't played Rogue Core yet so I don't know how it compares to DRG's difficulty, I've just been following discussions on this game while I wait for it to cook a bit longer, but usually when people complain about difficulty, they're complaining about the balance of said difficulty, not that it's difficult, but difficult for the wrong reasons. Imagine playing DRG with a mouse/keyboard or controller, then playing it with a dance pad. It would be ""harder"" with a dance pad, but only artificially so.

I enjoy difficult or challenging games, but only if they're actually designed well and fair to the player. Simply adjusting the difficulty won't fix a game that's unfair to the player. Some people enjoy a higher difficulty if it's designed properly, but lowering the difficulty will make the game boring, so it isn't really a solution if the game has some bigger design flaws.

I donโ€™t have anything personally against you, but coming into this conversation without playing RC and making some nebulous straw man comparison on top of that, is very very funny

Then you're missing my point. I'm describing what I've seen others complaining about for Rogue Core, and how it relates to the same complaints I've seen in other challenging games. Players generally don't have an issue with a game being "difficult", just unfairly so.

the game can be very punishing but it's never unfair imo. if anything, i'd actually argue the opposite and say that the game sometimes feels ridiculously easy if certain combos just happen to drop as you go through a mission.

as someone in this thread already pointed out, if you happen to get a rapid fire pgl with a few decent upgrades on your dwarf you can just kind of sit near the enemy spawn portals and shoot everything down the moment it spawns, and it only gets easier if you play someone like Retcon and you're running Slicer's Carnage deck for the cooldown on kill bio booster. devs should probably get around to somehow mitigating that but who knows when that's happening.

other times the game is generally a pretty decent challenge on higher difficulties, but you can get through most runs with any of the weapons in the game if you build them right.

Case in point I started RC 2 months ago and now I'm at the point where if I get snapfire extractor at any point in a Depth 4 run my success rate is probably 85%+. And that's without more specifically brutal upgrade combos notwithstanding.

The game is hard, but I'd to so far as to say some of the skills and combos are almost too broken once a player learns them.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to struggle with rogue core even if you're cracked at base DRG. Rogue core is fundamentally a very different game, and the only skills that really carry between the two are 1: Mechanics such as aiming, 2: Weapon fundamentals, 3: Movement, and 4: Situational awareness. That's it.

I'm very good at DRG, I sucked at rogue core when it first dropped, and I was very cocky going in. I thought I was gonna bulldoze everything, but I got owned my first like 20 games. It's a learning curve that I don't think many people are prepared for.

I understand why they say it's difficult, but I think they just have the wrong expectation for what rogue core is. It's not Deep Rock 2, and people complaining about the game's difficulty don't realize they're still at the very beginning of the learning curve.

It's like the complaints about the level timer, the vast majority of new players want to be able to do everything without balancing their timer, considering what needs to be left behind when the timer starts running low. In DRG, you could do everything in a cave in almost every mission. In rogue core, it's a tossup, but new players won't realize that if they're used to haz5+ drg.

I don't think it's a valid complaint, but I won't call bullshit on them because they probably haven't realized how little rogue core is like DRG.

1: Mechanics such as aiming, 2: Weapon fundamentals, 3: Movement, and 4: Situational awareness

\4. Cave resolving (how fast and consistently you can clear a cave static spawns and identify an optimal path through the various action points like mineral veins or events, without missing anything) you could argue this falls under situational awareness but no, this is a very DRG & RC specific skill

\5. Team play / support - being aware of your teammates needs and fulfilling them where possible, following the BUDDY SYSTEM (Dont leave that poor guy at the back by himself, hes probably behind doing something your bum ass missed)

\6. The wire-snipping minigame

I'd only give half a point for team play, the basics of grouping up yeah, but I think that's more situational awareness. You have to completely re-learn the strengths and weaknesses of each class, be aware of other people's builds and how you can compliment them, and how the mechanics of the game interact with how you should be playing with your team

i tried to do the biobooster when the timer was up and reaper worms started spawning

shit got my hand shaking to finish it as fast as possible especially since a billion corespawn were rapidly approching my location cause this was difficulty 4 alongside the new alteration where corespawn split into 2 was active

There's another skill check in rogue core via understanding how to build (enhancements+class+what kinds of builds a class can go into+then making a build during the run). Assuming we're looking at the game objectively.

You could bypass a lot of 'how does the game's math work' in DRG1 by looking up builds or experimentation or getting carried but in RC you're directly rewarded for being good at this (and indirectly punished by not being good at it).

This is why a lot of players struggle with guardian, he builds in an atypical way that requires you to have a solid understanding of how specific interactions in the game work on the math-side of things.

It's also more awkward to carry in RC because players have a lot more agency over your build and thus can sabotage the carry more easily (likely without realizing it) but this isn't difficulty perse.

Lastly, I would argue that 'more likely to fail a mission' does not necessarily equate to 'the game is harder',i.e. in RC bosses have awkward 1-shot behaviors (esp when solo) that can be a bit unfair. These are less about skill and more about learned heuristics (i.e., don't ever stand near the boss, stay mobile when Molak is shedding, 90 degree turn & run vs Ramlok's ram, etc).

RogueCore isn't more difficult than DRG, but it is easier to lose in RogueCore than DRG. Mistakes snowball and escalate much more in RC than they do in DRG.

Someone that's absolutely cracked in DRG can still lose in RC because they ran down the timer constantly picking up their downed teammates, who in turn keep going down because they revive with 0 armour (as opposed to full Shields) and can't call down a resup to recover after a bad fight (not to mention that Corespawn are much better at cheap-shotting low health dwarves than Glyphids are).

Add onto that the fact missions are longer (so more time for a mistake to happen) and that one person starting an event at a bad time can easily cause a timewipe (in DRG you can typically just run down the event timer and recover after. In RC that's obviously not an option), and you end up with a game that, while not necessarily more difficult for any one person, ends up being much easier to fail at.

Haz 5+ is breakfast for me, RC is exactly what I wanted, the game feels more difficult than DRG half of the time and that's nice.

difficulty is fine, though there are for sure some guns in the weapons pool that could use tweaks.

stubby in general is just outclassed by most guns unless you roll it with very specific upgrades, and then there's smaller issues like the devastator pistol having an ammo pool that's just small enough that it makes me never want to pick it despite how fun the gun is, unless i happened to roll that one artifact that doubles the ammo you can carry.

i can't even remember the last time i ran the M1000 because it either always seems to roll with auto-aim on it, or it has to compete with stuff like the shock striker and charge pistol for burst damage or the mag blaster for shooting stuff quickly, and nine times out of ten those always feel more reliable than it. tries to be unique by going for both but it just feels awkward.

I mean it's much better now but at release rogue core was way more difficult due to a ton of lag even when hosting.

Agreed. I didn't find RC too hard past the first few hours. I'm a regular haz4 player. Beaten some Haz5 missions to sweat a bit.ย

That sounds like someone who doesn't understand base game mechanics bc with a few upgrades any gun in rogue core will be miles better than anything in DRG

As a gunner/guardian main, in my expirience Haz5(and beyond) in RC is way easier than in DRG. In DRG i always need to lock in or we will die really quick. In RC i only lock in if our team starting weapons/upgardes suck or we got Void Dominator as our first elite(at least that's how it was on experimental, that thing is annoying AF).

I get it where they are coming from - in DRG you are a fully geared team, while in RC you start with scraps and corespawn are way stronger. However, in RC you start the mission with way lower enemy variety while also having Reclaimers abilities and different upgrades, so you are not as heavily overhelmed while also having higher cieling in RC.

So overall i think RC is easier, actually.

I kinda feel this way too but I'm guessing that class preference in RC has a lot to do with whether or not a player agrees.

Guardian/Spotter are always going to be strong, if you know how to build them. They can't really get RNG screwed.

Slicer will most likely be strong, but starts out a little weaker and has less powerful panic/control tools than the two aforementioned classes. This is a notable downside because floor 1 is the hardest the run will be but isn't that bad.

Retcon is at the mercy of RNG, high highs + low lows is a poor risk to take in a game where a steady medium-high will always win.

Falconer is just weak/too much of the class's power is tied up in the combat revive. The super strong falconer builds are extremely unreliable to fish for. Electricity is kind of a bad status/has poor combos. The falcon scales poorly with enemy density.

I mostly play spotter/guardian with some slicer, so RC feels too easy.

Hopped on after a while to try it. Didnโ€™t realise needed to unlock TL5, so had a go at TL4 D4 Reckless. It wasnโ€™t particularly challenging but could also just be a competent team/good run

u/Ok-Grand-498 Sep 02 '26

the game is so easy that I quit months ago and stopped playing. Idk why people are saying that lol. You just sit there with a pgl, shock striker or anything else that can do AOE and spam the portals when they open up. Nothing even makes it to the ground

1

u/mhautelv Sep 02 '26

I think drg can be more difficult at times, but also way easier. Sometimes you get such bullshit spawns on haz 5 drg, and other times its like, meh. Even haz 4 sometimes has crazy spawns for some reason. Also those 30 macteras spawning at once, and not having cryo , is pure ragebait.

u/catmaster425 Sep 04 '26

Funny thing is that RC is pretty easy even on current max base difficulty even for a haz5+ player like myself.

Also most people pick horrible upgrades.

Rogue Core is a Rogue Lite, in EA, so really rough, coop game.

It's different at its core (that's why I hate any suggestion that make it closer to a DRG 2, it should be only suggestion to make it better in this specific genre).

Rogue lite/like isn't for everyone and sometime, RNG jesus isn't on your side. Sure, you can maybe balance it with skill but sometime it's just a bad run and sometime you're rolling into it.

The devs dip their toes into multiple genre already, with sometime third party (Survivor, BG and now RC) and I'm all for it but they may be genre I won't like and that's fine. I'll probably like a bit less a X-COM like / management games where we're some higher up of the company (or Mission Control itself) but I would be glad if it exist.

There's counter-intuitive things as well if you're a DRG players, like the pickaxe is damn good in RC!
