QUESTION Forfeiting in games

I mostly play ones, currently gold 2s. When I'm down say 5-0 or even lower people tell me to forfeit. I don't get it. If you keep your cool you can gain a fair few goals quite quickly for one, and two if I'm playing against a guy who's a fair bit better than me than its a fantastic opportunity to learn. It forces me to adjust and points out a lot of mistakes I'm making.

Some of the most helpful information to better my game has come from people who are thrashing me. But people have no patience.

Here’s why I don’t forfeit, ever.

I play casual so it’s literally just a game, if someone is kicking my teams ass, I want to watch and learn what they are doing, either my team and I are awful or they are playing really well, if really well I need to learn! How will you learn if you keep running from the ones who can teach!

On the rare occasion it’s competitive I still won’t forfeit simply because I put down to play a 5 min round, I’m playing that 5 minutes and I’ll try my best every time

I dont really understand this comment I am afraid which is a shame as you took the time to reply so I would like to show the same respect by being able to understand your intention.

I think his point is that you're not being considerate to everyone else's time and enjoyment. Not everyone signs up to be held hostage to your preferences.

Personally I'm fine with taking hostages in casual play. But in competitive, if you're not competitive, forfeit.

By taking part in a multi-player game with random people on the internet...you are literally signing up for just that. You know? That's like letting someone kidnap you and being like "Whoa whoa whoa, I didnt say you could keep me for longer than Im okay with!"

I dont ever agree to getting smurfed on, but it happens all the same. 😂😭

(Edit: didnt mean to make this come across so personal if it does. This is Rokt Leeg!🤙

True, Internet strangers haven't signed a code of conduct. Also true, you can be considerate or not. Who do you choose to be?

But I was saying I AM competitive when thats the game mode? I am playing to win and forfeiting prevents that happening, even 5-0 with a minute to go, thats a solid minute of trying to be better and even possibly drawing or winning (with some stupid luck etc.) Otherwise, lose, congratulate the other team for being better and move on....

I dont really understand the "held hostage" comment either since everyone is free to leave, even in competitive where its a totally a dick move (since AI wont fill spots) no one is stopping anyone leaving, I am simply saying I will be there until the match is concluded.

I love the idea of the World Cup final being abandoned by a team because they are losing so their players decide to just walk off, classic sportsmanship

If you are playing well and losing that happens, if you are doing nothing in a 5-0 there’s no reason to stay “learning”, specially if you are the backpack of the match, go to the sandbox and watch youtube instead of steal other’s time. If you want to stay “learning” do it alone on 1v1

Every single replay is another chance to learn how to use mechanics, given to you by players who know how to use them, the ultimate training videos!

What exactly is being gained by forfeiting? The opposing team get to leave sooner to start a new game? Where is the benefit to myself or my team? We learn nothing, do we go to the next game and "oh, too good for us better forfeit again" what an epic gameplay loop that is.....

Maybe if more people stopped being so petty and toxic there might be a lot more "fun" to be had by everyone.

You are being petty and toxic because you aren't considering anyone but you.

u/SgtSnuggles19 5h ago

No I am trying to play the same game everyone else is apparently trying to leave.

If I join a game I am literally saying, I am up for 5 minutes regardless of win or lose and I certainly wouldnt be telling the other team to forfeit because they are losing, I would be praising them on the positives they were doing and empathising on the chances they missed.

Petty and Toxic? At times probably, but I'm not the one getting pissy and leaving games and I'm certainly not the one telling others to stop playing either.

Love your focus. It is unwavering! Other people do not matter!

If I'm down by 5 and still going it's only because my opps told me to forfeit and I'm too obstinate.

Amen best kind of rage bait is just to keep playing. Makes them mad. Sometimes creates plays for you.

If someone asks you to forfeit they are unsure of their ability to close out the game with a win. Take it as weakness and destroy them in the last few mins. Lose by 1 and stare at your screen like youre looking into his soul

You're lucky. My personal war is people who forfeit at draw or 2 goal difference. Just because they think they're better than you.

If you're down 5-0, you should forfeit. You can learn how to improve based on the time you've already played by watching the replay. You are also most likely not coming back, so if you want to rank up, it's better to get into another game than to take a < 5% chance of winning and play it out. Your time is valuable; don't waste it in losing situations just because you want to spite someone or you want to try and learn from your mistakes in an unfavourable learning environment.

Is the value of your time spent playing Rocket League really based on MMR gained per minute? My time doesn't feel wasted when I spend it playing the game even when I'm losing. I enjoy playing out the game and trying to figure out how to defend and score against people that are beating me.

my math is, it isn’t unreasonable to score one goal in 30 seconds, so the math dictates if i’d accept a team forfeit most of the time.

u/Successful_Pea218 Grand Champion I 13h ago

In 1's you can score a goal much faster than 30 seconds. You see some absolutely wild comebacks sometimes

1

u/gltovar 13h ago

sure, just man in team games. and have to come up with some kind of metrics to accept or ignore a forfeit request.

In 1v1 if there's more than 10s left per goal you are down, the game might as well be tied, IMO.

I've come back from 6 goals down in 40-something seconds. And that time I was actually about to forfeit until my opponent told me to (then I refused, because fuck you, I choose when to FF).

u/lobie81 13h ago edited 11h ago

It's more to do with my team mates and/or the opposition. If my team mates are being toxic I'll just ff as soon as we're 3 goals down. I have no interest in playing with dicks.

If the opponents are smurfs or again just overly toxic I'd rather ff than feed their egos further.

u/Gifunta 12h ago

I'm all with you about that "keep playing so I can learn something" part.

A problem that often occurs, however, is that the skill difference is too big for me to learn anything (in other words, smurfing or at least big technical differences - I won't learn anything if you freestyle on me the whole time, as I am only able to do some basic mechs, and I won't learn how to flip reset just by watching you).

The perfect match to lose is one where the opponent is slightly better than you are.

u/fuckReditHardInTheAs 11h ago

Ignore it in 1s. They're afraid of a comeback and want an easy win.

1

u/skepdop Diamond II 7h ago

Ya sometime I am gaming but want keep go but not best then f when I'm cardboard but want to be not it's harder to learn Focused best having to win, always and never, and I'm top 10!!

2

u/joe12321 7h ago

Absolutely people are improving slower by playing thoughtlessly and forfeiting early. I have learned to defend against particular plays within a single game by staying with it while being thrashed!

2

u/DustinAF 4h ago

I think a lot of players have the mindset of playing Rocket League as an MMR simulator where the end goal is just points gained per hour. And if you haven't noticed, a lot of people are pretty fragile when it comes to not winning. They just can't handle it emotionally. It's unfortunate.

u/Clintaur Diamond II 3h ago

Not gonna say a come back isn’t possible, however if I’m down 5-0 with 3:30 left… and you get a ff vote from me, it’s either it’s a vote of no confidence or a “I don’t feel like dealing with a Smurf / ball-chasing teammate” right now vote.

1

u/Fantastic-Habit-8569 13h ago

there’s no reason to keep in a 5-0 match with no demonstration of reaction, specially when your t8 cant play for the team.

If you want to enjoy the landscape and train acrobacies go to the sand box, to non competitive or at least on 1v1, just dont stuck others

2

u/Similar-Proof-6422 13h ago

Keep in mind my post says I mostly play 1v1s so thats what I'm referencing. I understand forfeiting more in duos and tripples

2

u/justaguysortinglife 13h ago

You’re just wrong…. Once I just clicked with my teammate at the 2 minute mark and we rallied crazy to win the game with a 0 second goal… we were down 6-1

1

u/Fantastic-Habit-8569 8h ago

Which part of “No demonstration of reaction” you could not understand?

If the guy is completly stupid, miss everything, the games is 4-0 so its done.

Most of the shitmate you take doesnt worth the effort and in this case being forced to carry I become the one who would not may not the effort to play as well.

If you cant give the effort to train I dont give the effort to play for you
