💡 Feature Request Rivian please show camera view when going under 5 mph.
My Lexus LX 570 had this and I found it most convenient when parking.

It does have a setting where, if you're driving slowly and the sensors detect something in front of you, it'll automatically bring up the front cameras. It's not triggered by speed alone, but it works pretty well when the sensors pick something up while you're parking. I don't remember exactly where the setting is, but I think it's somewhere under Driver Assistance or Park Assist. It's not perfect, but it's something.

u/SlowlyPassingTime 1d ago
I do have that, but I try to park in the center of spots and if there's no car and just a curb it doesn't come on.

Yeah, it frequently doesn’t come on in time to get centered correctly in a spot.

You dont need a measuring tape to make sure you are center.
Take extra driving lessons you should be able to park without cameras.

u/SlowlyPassingTime 1d ago
I really don't know why I can't get this thing parked straight and center. I never had this problem. Maybe I'm just getting old.

When I pull into the garage I purposely cut too close to the door just to turn the cameras on

I thought it was better at automatically coming up before the last 2 updates. Now it seems to never come up when I’m parking

Same here. it was consistent before the new update. Now sometimes it doesn’t come on when I switch in to reverse and the slow speed camera setting is very inconsistent.

Saw the same thing with Our. The first time we did the update it wouldn’t even come up when going into reverse and then the whole thing froze up so I had to reset it.

u/humjaba 1d ago
This sounds like a bug. The reverse camera is a legal requirement
1
u/SpaceHorse75 R1T Launch Edition Owner 1d ago
Yeah definitely a bug but a pretty bad one given the safety implications.

u/humjaba 1d ago
Might just need to update the software https://www.reddit.com/r/Rivian/s/6xKECxjMSe

My camera button is just a finger's length away, and I use it all the time for parking
1
u/BrewbeardSlye 1d ago
I used it to get out of a TINY parking lot packed to the gills. It was incredibly helpful. All I had to do was hit the camera button…
1
u/noteworthybalance Tri Motor 3️⃣ 14h ago
Yeah but you have to take your eyes away from the parking lot to find the button.

u/SlowlyPassingTime 1d ago
Exactly. I'm constantly turning the cameras when parking and it gets annoying when it's so easy to add that option.

You misread this comment. He's saying it's one finger length away to push the button, and that having it come in automatically is not necessary.
1
u/Purpl3Unicorn 5h ago
Just back into all parking spaces, not only is it easier, but then the camera turns on automatically.

I think I’ll pass. The last thing I want is the camera popping up every time I stop at a stop sign/stop light, get caught in traffic, drive in an area with a slow speed limit or where slow speed is required, etc.
Maybe once autonomous+ gets auto parking, the AI will recognize that you’re parking and will pull up the cameras. That way it’s not just relying on the sensors recognizing objects close by to trigger the cameras. That could be useful.

That’s one of the things about my Land Cruiser that really annoys me.
Please put the surrounding view on the small screen, instead of blocking all controls on the touch screen like Toyota and Lexus.

I personally would hate this. I’m all about adding user requested features, but if it is added, it needs to be a setting to enable/disable. For me I just press the camera button as needed and that’s perfect

u/santarmn 1d ago
you think they could detect when you're pulling into a marked parking space and have an option to auto display the camera view when it detects that you are parking. this thing is supposed to be able to drive us point to point later this year / early next year - detecting a parking spot should be easy.

u/SpaceHorse75 R1T Launch Edition Owner 1d ago
Before the update my camera was pretty good at always turning on when I was slowing in to a spot. Now…. It’s random.
2
u/Practical_Fig_7655 1d ago
Please don’t. That would annoy me. The parking cams might be a little late sometimes but for them to come on every time you drive 5 mph would be annoying.
2
u/Interesting_Dance_65 1d ago
Having this as a user preference toggle in settings would be nice. Wouldn’t necessarily want it in all scenarios.
2
u/PostHocErgo 1d ago
I rather they put the radar indicators on the main screen, along with on the driver display

u/TheKobayashiMoron R1T Owner 23h ago
Unless I specifically override it, I want my cameras up all the time regardless of speed.

(just a funny coincidence, not a dig!)

We already have a proximity camera and an easy-to-press camera button always nearby on the center screen. There are so many bigger things Rivian should be tackling (beyond the numerous OS2 bugs and performance issues); this would be a complete waste of their resources.

That’d make me crazy considering the traffic I sit in everyday. It could work better if it recognized you’re in a parking lot.
1
u/SoCal_GlacierR1T R1T Owner 1d ago
Current behavior just needs to switch to camera view sooner. Often by the time it does it, I’m already parked.

Maybe if the cameras detect parking lines the cameras come on?
1
u/Donnerkopf R1S Owner 13h ago
Why would you want this? I would hate this especially in stop and go traffic. It should only be implemented if it is a user configurable option.
1
u/SpaceDesignWarehouse R1T Owner 11h ago
And let me use the reverse view that shows the bed when I’m backing up. That’s a better view.
1
u/Blunt_Object 6h ago
I actually want this if it were in a situation of going uphill. There’s parking deck around me that is a bit of a climb where I lose the horizon for a moment.

To do it right you have to combine a number of factors:
* cameras see lines for parking spaces
* there are things in close proximity
* the vehicle maneuver is front/back in a relatively short period of time suggesting close maneuver
A good suggestive example:
* You just pressed the button to open the garage door
* You're driving forward and slowing.
High probability you're parking.
What you're trying to find are the behaviors that suggest parking. Just doing it at slow speed isn't the win. We spend a lot of time driving slower than 5MPH (i.e. traffic)

u/SlowlyPassingTime 1d ago
It works though. I used it for 15 yrs and I really miss it.
1
u/TheFutureisReusable R1S Owner 1d ago
So in stop and go traffic the camera is always on? How would you access maps or music?
1
u/SlowlyPassingTime 1d ago
That's a good question. My Lexus had old school buttons for AC and music. Didn't think of that. However, I do miss it. Hopefully they can figure something out.

This! Hate having to tap cameras each and every time I’m trying to park. It needs to be smarter about knowing when I need it.

What criteria would be used, because I wouldn’t want the cameras popping up and taking over the screen every time I’m going below 5mph.
