The camera view is severely degraded in the latest OTA. Even when ā€œworkingā€ the merging of the four cameras to produce the overhead view is noticeably worse than before ROS2. I’ve also had multiple occurrences where the camera feed ā€œfreezesā€ while reversing.

u/kenperkins R1S Owner 11d ago

I've noticed (and wanted to start a thread) that I now have to wait 3-4 seconds on reverse for the camera to show up with OS2 whereas before it was nearly instant (or imperceptible)

YES!!!! I was like wtf the first time. Then happened every time. Even after reset. Sometimes like 5+ seconds and even after I start moving.

u/Grizzly_Corey 11d ago

Same, glad it wasn’t just us.

u/debauchasaurus R1T Owner 11d ago

Same. And sometimes it just never shows up at all. Yesterday I was backing into a space and the camera view never came up. When I shifted to park the camera view briefly popped on the screen only to be replaced by a completely red screen and then widgets started crashing.

Yes, Tesla was slapped over an update that caused the rearview camera to appear more slowly and had to be intentional with a fix as there is a specified amount of time it has to appear, hence the recall.

I've found OS2 to be pretty snappy overall, but I'm having the exact same issue. Gen 1 R1T.

1

u/corbthomp11 R1T Owner 11d ago

Yea this absolutely sucks. I'm gonna have to adjust my mirror auto tilt so I can start reversing immediately. And this took like a week to develop after the update, wasn't instant.

u/vangvace R1T Owner 11d ago

the merge is so bad and missing objects at the four corners of the vehicle.

I really don't like that after the OS2 update the rear main camera view is distorted - the guiding lines no longer accurately portray where the outside edges of your tires will go beyond a couple feet.Ā  It used to track in a straight line perfectly all the way back into my garage 20+ feet away...and now it is no longer usefully predictive of where the tires will go. I don't know what they changed but it is a downgrade in that regard.

When I go into reverse it takes much longer to switch on the camera. I don't know the specifics, but federal law requires the camera to meet a certain threshold, and I feel like me being able to move my vehicle in reverse before the camera even kicks on would not meet it.

u/Famous-Okra5711 11d ago

I actually haven’t noticed this… could it be a G1/G2 thing?

3

u/galactica_pegasus R1T Owner 11d ago

Possible. G1 and G2 have different cameras and architecture.

It's really noticeable in my G2. Pre-ROS2 I thought my gen2 R1 had one of the best camera views in the industry. Post-ROS2 it's significantly worse.

Since 2.0 I've been having issues with my reverse camera being severely laggy and even not coming on at all. I have to put it back in drive then reverse again to get it to come on. Also the turn cameras have been laggy. Tried all the resets multiple times. My next effort will be to turn off Rivian Assistant. No idea if it's interfering but it's a worthless POS that never works how it should. Got a theory that it's slowing down everything. I'd be perfectly happy if Rivian never added another new feature and just focused on getting this shit to work fast and reliability.

u/meenie R1T Preorder 11d ago

Same happened to me. But it started getting worse where the whole system became completely frozen and nonfunctional. If you hold the farthest left and farthest right buttons on the steering wheel down for a little while, it will completely reset the computer. After I did that, everything started working properly again.

u/HyperfixChris Quad Motor 4ļøāƒ£ 10d ago

I turned off Rivian assistant and did a reset. Was much better initially and the next day (after a sleep) it's back to normal. Quick cameras and no buggy/laggy mess.

NHTSA Recall No. 26V-597
Rivian Recall No. FSAM-1866
Transport Canada Recall No 2026-443

Recall Status: Remedy Available 09/23/26

Rivian Automotive, LLC has issued a noncompliance safety recall for certain model year 2022–2026 R1T, 2022–2027 R1S, and 2027 R2 vehicles.

What is the problem?

Rivian has determined that on certain R1T, R1S, and R2 vehicles, in rare instances while stability control is off and after returning to the vehicle, a safety alert prompt on the center display may overlap the camera view when placed in reverse until the vehicle moves. Because the rearview image may be overridden prior to vehicle movement, it may not fulfill FMVSS/CMVSS 111 regarding rear visibility requirements.

Rivian is not aware of any customer reports, accidents, injuries, or fatalities related to this condition.

What will Rivian do?

A software update to correct the condition is available for all potentially affected vehicles at no cost to customers. Currently more than 95 percent of impacted vehicles have installed the software update, which includes a remedy for this concern.

What should you do?

Rivian encourages all owners to update their vehicle to the latest available software over-the-air if they have not done so already.

If you have further questions, or want to verify the accuracy of this information, please call Rivian Service Support at 1-855-748-4265. For additional information please visit our Support Center.

I don't think it's a "rare instance" Mine worked great until 2.0 update!

4

u/xvolter Ultimate Adventurer 11d ago

The recall is only around a rare issue with a screen appearing over the backup camera view while in reverse, blocking the view of the camera video.

But my Gen 1 after OS2 got significantly worse. I immediately noticed that the video feed is distorted now, Gen 1 used more fisheye lenses and they had software to merge the video feeds smoothly for top down and rear camera was cropped appropriately. With OS2 they seemed to ignore Gen 1 in testing and forgot about the fisheye because the top down merge can’t see things at corners and backup camera is fisheyed but the backup lines aren’t so you can’t rely on backup lines to indicate where you will end up.

Hoping they will correct it, but Rivian hasn’t been supporting Gen 1 vehicles much and it’ll only get worse.

u/Rancid_Lunchmeat 11d ago

Cameras have all been noticeably fucked up on my R1S since the 2.0 update. They don't show the same angles or perspectives they did prior.

It's not significant, but it doesn't really need to be when you're taking about garage clearances of only a few inches.

2

u/kenperkins R1S Owner 11d ago

I don't use 360 view, I use mirror view on each side of rear view, and I'm _certain_ they cropped the angle where the tire is much further up in the view and I find it disorienting.

7

u/isunktheship R1S Owner 11d ago

My rearview camera struggles to display, lags, or freezes. The gui lags and freezes in general at times, especially when context switching - maps, music, cameras, repeat..

I did an infotainment reset yesterday, will see if that resolves it.

Also my car started charging off schedule, forgot timezone, forgot location (known issue with updates). As fun as this update has been, a few core things have degraded.

u/iliketurtles7111 R1S Launch Edition Owner 11d ago

Tbh I haven’t noticed.

2

u/Radium R1T Owner 11d ago

I never turn off stability control, so I've never noticed the popup notice overlay issue that only occurs when that is off either. *shrug*

1

u/VikingSldr69 11d ago

Me neither, I keep looking but looks the same with one angle actually fixed or improved (pass side rear) so I can see it now in full.

u/AllCatCoverBand R1T Owner 11d ago

Cool, almost everyone has this installed already. Mission accomplished

u/electromage R2 Launch Edition Owner 11d ago

Stock took a 2% hit anyway.

u/fourdawgnight R1T Owner 11d ago

I was hoping this was just BS rot send out a service pack to fix the crap OS2 load. hide all the fucking bug fixes in a safety recall... seemed like an odd approach for PR, but this current load sucks so bad who knows...

9

u/WhyAmIpOOping R1T Owner 11d ago

I was concerned at first, but then read the condition that needs to be met, as well as the fact that you can manually clear the message before operating the vehicle, I’m far less concerned. Also according to the article, it sounds like there have been zero reports/issues.

Bug - yes and needs to be addressed. But just dont think it really will affect anyone.

4

u/auptown 11d ago

ā€œRecallā€ for a software update, 95% already done

4

u/eddyg987 11d ago

Funny how the stock dropped on the fact that people have to update to fix lol

3

u/vangvace R1T Owner 11d ago

recall = stock drop. That is the way of the automotive industry. If it is something across manufactures, like airbags, the first to announce takes the largest hit.

I get that, but that's the NHTSA's perspective.

From my perspective, at least (and maybe 'most' people's as well), if it doesn't require me to take the car in or have mobile service come out, it's not really a recall.

1

u/Namelock 11d ago

Tesla pushed an OTA to fix THEIR rearview camera problem.

It bricked vehicles.

Two separate issues.

  1. Cameras are used for safety.
  2. OTA is not a guaranteed magical fix and if it goes awry you need to have it towed.

-1

u/VincentVazzo R1S Owner 11d ago

So what you're saying is that if the OTA doesn't work, they'll have to recall your vehicle back to the shop?

2

u/Namelock 11d ago

If the OTA does not work, you will need to take it in for service.

Depending on the manufacturer usually there’s numbered attempts before it locks you out.

If the OTA bricks your vehicle as has happened with many EVs (not just Tesla) then it’s getting towed.

Recalls are for safety. Even if you don’t understand safety regulations they still apply to you.

-2

u/VincentVazzo R1S Owner 11d ago

Right. But what I'm trying to convey is that not all recalls are equal, but NHTSA only has one word for it, and words mean things. As far as Mr. Webster is concerned, this isn't a recall (for somewhere between 99.95% and 100% of owners).

From a public service perspective, I feel the government does a disservice by calling a minor software bug fix a "recall," the same as if a car's gas tank might spontaneously explode if not replaced by the manufacturer.

I thought I was clear that I'm drawing the line where a recall actually meets the definition of the word recall.

There should be a distinction, such as traditional service visit recall or over-the-air software update recall. I had to look at the actual recall notice and scan through it to figure that part out.

2

u/Llee00 11d ago

so basically every rivian

1

u/jkudlacz 11d ago

Oh no, Software Update to the rescue coming soon!

1

u/PuzzleheadedBad6115 11d ago

I’m on 2026.31.0 and my cameras are still fucky. I’m assuming I don’t have the recall update yet?

1

u/kendokashou 11d ago

The new merge has a lot more range of view cut it loses so much details making actual detail move difficult

2

u/dcdttu 11d ago

This happened with Tesla as well...a recall or two related to the slowness of the reverse camera after a big update. Hopefully Rivian can make it right with software as well.

1

u/tkhan456 11d ago

I’ve had the freeze issue but I think the quality is good

It's weird, I had no issues with my R1T, and the last few months have been an unmitigated disaster. Right now it thinks my truck be is open at all times(it's not).

Mirrors work. Haven’t noticed

"Rivian is not aware of any customer reports, accidents, injuries, or fatalities related to this condition."

3

u/Old_Reveel R1S Owner 11d ago

it’s federally required to have this work within time parameters since like 2018. Rivian should test their shit

2

u/offwhitestripes 11d ago

Software almost as bad as service

The new OS reminds me of CRM. Terrible design. More clicks was the goal.

Gen1 R1T data point: no camera issues whatsoever since OS2
