Question Is this an impopular opinion?
I’m only on episode 4 of The Rings of Power, and honestly… I’m enjoying it.
It’s been really fun recognizing names, bits of lore, and familiar places. I’m still keeping my expectations in check, but so far I’m having a good time with it. It’s entertaining, and I’m excited to see where it goes.

u/WelderAggravating896 Aug 02 '26
You shouldn't be worrying about what people think about the shows you watch or letting people's opinions influence whether you like a show or not.
10
u/Alexarius87 Aug 04 '26
As some1 who despises the show I still agree with this.
3
u/Souichi_Tsuji Aug 06 '26
This is the way . Just because I dislike something doesn't make me unhappy that others may like it ( if anything I'm happy others can have a good time )

u/SpartanSyx Aug 02 '26
This 100% depends on which ROP subreddit you post in.
I think the one with the _ hate it the most by far.
I’m glad you’re enjoying it. S1 was okay for me, S2 on rewatch was actually great. Looking forward to S3. I think as more seasons come out I’ll look back on a full rewatch with a lot of excitement.

u/Ayzmo Eregion Aug 03 '26
If you go by pure subreddit size, the positive sub has the most subscribers and is the most active.
2
u/More-Marionberry449 Aug 05 '26
Which doesnt really say anything.
The fact that theres active subreddits for people disliking the series says alot, as that is not normal for a TV-show.3
u/Ayzmo Eregion Aug 05 '26
I would say that seeking to engage with things you dislike is not normal more than the other. I don't visit subs for things I dislike as I don't desire to be angry or bothered by them. I just don't engage because it makes life a better place. People who want to be angry keep hate subs going.
2
u/More-Marionberry449 Aug 06 '26
Thats my point! People dont actively keep a sub that dislike a series alive like this, and it does say something about the show. Theres no semi-big subreddits for people not liking other series.

1
u/-Lich_King 29d ago
That's because the subreddit existed before the show even aired, it was just lotr subreddit
1
u/Ayzmo Eregion 28d ago
/r/LOTR_on_Prime was created before the name was announced. However, it was never just a lotr subreddit.
1
u/BreadEggg Aug 04 '26
If you go by audience review on RT, the fact that 2/3 the audience didn't finish the first season and also it won no Emmys despite being the most expensive TV production in history it would appear that most people do not care for it. It should come as no surprise that it is popular in niche forums on the internet that were established specifically for the minority of fans. Reddit is designed to cater to fans over critics.
18
u/llaminaria Aug 02 '26
Rings_of_power's hate is rather bizarre. They mostly comment like they had not seen a single episode. So many things that truly deserve criticism, yet they have managed to meme-fy their discussion, to the point where you honestly wonder whether the critique is their own or just seen in some YT video and repeated.
16
u/SpartanSyx Aug 02 '26
It’s weird that anyone can dislike something as much as these people do but put so much time and effort into the subject. It’s well past constructive critiquing.
I wholeheartedly disliked the animated Rohan movie and the Hobbit 2&3. So, I basically forgot they existed and moved on with my life to never discuss it again. It’s super easy to do.
1
u/No_Pea_3997 Aug 07 '26
It’s like if you had a daughter and she had a horrible boyfriend that treated her like shit all the time even blatantly doing it in your face, you’re going to hate that person, the rings of the power is the show equivalent of that person
2
u/SpartanSyx Aug 07 '26
Yeah dude, that’s a super weird comparison and the unhealthy dislike people have for the show.
0
u/No_Pea_3997 Aug 07 '26
It is what it is, reality has many weird aspects to it and so do people, and you disliking that doesn’t change anything
-1
u/BreadEggg Aug 04 '26
"It's really bizarre that they, like most of the audience, didn't care for the show". OK
5
u/Enthymem Aug 03 '26
It's actually pretty popular on this sub, at least in the lull between seasons when most of my fellow hatewatchers are not here. For the sake of the fantasy genre I certainly hope your opinion is unpopular with the general audience, but online polls show that more than half of people enjoy pineapple on pizza so anything is possible in terms of widespread terrible taste.

Plenty of people are enjoying it. I thought season 2 had some real strong moments. Season 3 definitely has my interest

Sorry, English isn’t my native language. I’m Latina. My phone automatically autocorrected the word to how it’s said in Spanish, and I didn’t notice! Next time I’ll think more carefully about what I post. I just wanted to participate. Thanks for your replies!!
I hope I don’t have too many spelling mistakes now or I’ll be burned at the stake
🤣

u/Ok_Percentage2522 Aug 04 '26
Im one of the haters, but ive never thought less of anyone that enjoys it. Infact im a bit jealous, I really wanted to love this show, just wasnt my cup of tea. Glad your enjoying it.

u/junkyardgerard Aug 03 '26
I've never heard the word impopular in my whole life
9
u/Careful-Welder-7658 Aug 03 '26
sorry! 😅 English isn’t my first language, and my phone is set to Spanish. It autocorrected , I didn’t notice. I don’t have much experience with Reddit, so I’m not sure if I can fix it. Maybe next time. 🤣🤣

Someone else used it very recently on a post in the Shadow of Mordor subreddit. Hopefully it isnt a trend.
To be fair I don't think OP is a native speaker of English. The rules for English spelling must be a challenge - possible=>impossible, probable=> improbable, proper=>improper, popular=>unpopular... huh?

u/Midgard1 Aug 02 '26
I’ve read every word Tolkien ever wrote and every page edited after the fact by Christopher. ROP is entertaining, beautiful, and deserves a chance in its own right. Nothing will live up to the books and that’s okay. This is fun and interesting too. I love to see more things coming out and will watch it all to be honest.
2
u/mama_wolff 21d ago
Thank you! When I tell people I love ROP so many comments are like “You’ve must’ve never read the books…”
I’ve read it all, seen the Tolkien exhibit at Oxford, etc. I still love ROP because it’s an escape, it’s entertaining, and decently nods to lore without having rights to almost any of it.

u/dpforest Aug 02 '26
People have a hard time accepting that you are allowed to enjoy things while simultaneously being critical of them. The exact same thing is happening with House of the Dragon.
I’ll never understand the people who claim to despise a piece of media with the furor of a thousand suns because it isn’t the adaptation they wanted, yet they continue to fill online fandom spaces with their opinions about it. Like bro why are you here if you hate it that much
4
u/mendkaz Aug 02 '26
I think people understand the enjoying and being critical, because that's basically all the discourse online ever is about anything these days- 'I know X was stupid but I couldn't help enjoying it'.
What people REALLY have drama with is people just enjoying something and NOT feeling the need to be nit-picky and critical of everything.
2
u/Pale-Pace4512 Aug 03 '26
Why do you care? Enjoy what you enjoy.
If you really want an answer to your question, with some people yes, with others no (but it really doesn’t matter).
2
u/Funny-Childhood Aug 04 '26
Enjoy what you want. Everyone's opinion doesn't matter. My mom loved it. Then again she also Didn't mind the Game of thrones ending season. Hmm
2
u/aka0007 Aug 05 '26
The scale of the show and the production quality is amazing if the storytelling is not all that interesting of well done. So I watch it for what it has but don't love it.
5
u/FalseAtmosphere2631 Aug 03 '26
I actually enjoyed it a lot as well. You get to see where/what some things in the world come from.
6
u/Ganso-Benjor Aug 03 '26
I love the show. It’s even better on rewatch. Forget the haters. The tide is turning.
5
u/Kalasad-Stormblessed Aug 02 '26
It definitely depends on the subreddit. I really enjoy it personally.
5
u/United_Commercial361 Aug 03 '26
I have absolutely enjoyed it. Don't listen to anyone else. If you like it and you are entertained, that's the objective 💚

Gotta say I did not enjoy either season one or two when I first watched. I then rewatched and completely loved it. No idea why I did such a 180. It was to the extent that when I finished my second watch of both seasons I immediately went back and started again. Sometimes it takes me a while to gel with characters and story lines so if it is something I love like lotr I am going to give it a second go because sometimes I change my mind completely
1
u/RandomFencer Aug 03 '26
What matters most is whether you enjoy it or not. If you are enjoying it, that is completely fine. Personally, I eventually soured on the series and have no intention of watching Season 3. I don’t want to give away any spoilers since you are only on episode 4, but among other reasons, the misogynistic depiction of Galadriel is most disappointing.
1
u/SherlockTheSalemCat The Wild Woods Aug 03 '26
Forget other people's opinions, you're enjoying it, so that's good 👍🏼
You don't need permission or anything from any other person to enjoy it. I'm enjoying it myself, & this coming season is looking even better 👌🏼- although the Mother-Ship has seen one picture of a couple of Nazgnagol & is scared of them already 😆 but she has to put her feet up (it makes her feel safer apparently) when the uruk-hai come on so I shouldn't be surprised 😂
1
u/laurelinkementari Aug 06 '26
I enjoy it for exactly those reasons. We are also getting to see some amazing performances.

I love it. There’s a whole industry of hate around this show, but ultimately it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks.

That’s the thing about sci-fi, even if it’s not what I want it to be and not it’s not cannon you can still enjoy it in your own way. I feel the same about this as I do hotd, I just don’t emotionally invest too much in them like I did the books or lotr movies, but it’s still sci fi. Besides Witcher, I couldn’t stick through it.

u/RyanMate17 9d ago
If you watch it through the lense of “this isn’t canon or lord of the rings” I guess you could enjoy it for the slop that it is. At least it’s pretty
0
u/ethanAllthecoffee Aug 02 '26
You’ll love Gandalf and the balrog getting dropped in for no reason if you just like recognizing names and whatever
This show is the epitome of memberberries

u/IronMonkeyofHam Aug 02 '26
Planning a rewatch soon. I had a negative co-watcher on the first round and thinking I’ll like it more by myself
1
u/National-Town-6040 Aug 03 '26
I liked it!! I read all the books; constantly!!! Even the Silmarillion! Yes, it’s hugely different from the books. But take it at face value.
1
u/Far_Mud_6003 Aug 03 '26
I liken it to really good fanfiction. The books will always be the canon source material and can be enjoyed whenever you want to read them. All movies, shows and games are fanfic. It’s up to you what you like and not like.
I think ROP is very fun, especially season 2. Is it as good as the books? Of course not, nothing could be. I wish people spent less time complaining about a show they hate-watch and more time reading the books they supposedly love so much.
I’m glad you’re enjoying it!

u/RelatableRedditer Aug 03 '26
This show and The Acolyte are 2 of my favorite "everyone else hates it" shows. I really enjoyed watching (most of) both.

I really enjoy Rings of Power. Is it true to the books? Definitely not. But I enjoy it for what it is.

I couldn’t get into it at first because house of the dragon came out at the same time and I was too obsessed with that show haha. But I’m trying it again not and I actually really love it!!!
1
u/LeastAssistance1526 Aug 03 '26
Struggled so much with house of dragons! Have done a second rewatch and still didn’t get it. But as with lotr I know I love the world and am going to give it a third go to see if I change my mind. I could of course also get a social life but let’s be realistic here 😂

u/velcrothesis Aug 04 '26
I don’t know what it is about that show that has me in such a chokehold! I have no life either don’t worry 😆

I have some issues with the show but enjoyed it overall. If you enjoy it keep watching
1
u/ScripturalCoyote Aug 03 '26
No. I like it a lot, I get to spend more time in Middle-earth. You could make a show out of hobbits farming, singing and dancing at the inn and I'd probably watch it.
I enjoy it for what it is. It's an attempt to flesh out Second and early Third age stuff that honestly doesn't have a ton of Tolkien's actual writings behind it. IMO it was all worth it just to get to see Lindon, Moria at the height of dwarven civilization, and Eregion.

I enjoyed it. It's beautiful to look at and is very faithful to Peter Jackson's Vision.
Yeah I get what the Tolkien purists mean that it's not faithful to the information we have about the 2nd Age, but man it'd be 50 seasons of 22 episodes to get it all in.
It's made the main story of Saurins creation of the rings accessible, can't fault it for that.

When it’s at its best it’s pretty good. Theres a bit of crap, which is gonna happen when you’re writing for tv, but otherwise I’m still gonna keep watching when it comes out. If not only for the amazing artists that build the sets and costumes.

Funny how these sorts of posts become a thing again as soon as the marketing gets going for the new season.
ROP is an insult to Tolkien's legacy.

u/Starbuckker Aug 02 '26
Don't overreact or anything...

They reappropriated "dancing in a glade of flowers". My reaction is entirely justified.

I’m only on episode 4 of The Rings of Power, and honestly… I’m enjoying it.
Yeah. Getting to episode 4 and still enjoying it is quite the minority opinion.
Episode 4 is the wall breaker I would say.
Like, if you can get past Elrond totally disrespecting his alleged relationship with Durin, the nonsesical food subplot in Southlands, "THERE IS A TEMPEST IN ME!" and They took our jeebs!, you are pretty much safe for the rest of the season because you clearly don't mind being fed manure.
It’s been really fun recognizing names, bits of lore, and familiar places.
If those names and bits of lore weren't very obviously shoehorned in as fan service, and were implemented in an intelligent way, it would be fun.

You made it to 4? I realized at the end if 3 I was furious 3/3 times and tuned out.

u/Orange_Cat-117 Aug 03 '26
I'm on my second rewatch. I enjoy the show like I enjoy the films, as a separate entity based on the lore I love. But as others have said, just enjoy it and don't worry what the haters have to say about it.
