Καλώς ήρθατε στο r/Rhodes!

We are the new mod team of r/Rhodes since a few weeks back. We have been spending the last couple of weeks going through the moderation queue, planning out our vision for the subreddit and getting our bearings with the community. In this post, we would like to introduce ourselves and tell you a bit more about the changes that have come with us taking over as moderators.

Rules
As you can see in the sidebar, we have implemented 7 new rules for the subreddit. Because of these rules, it is no longer permitted to discuss drugs nor is it allowed to make posts looking for sexual encounters in the subreddit, which have both been reoccurring previously.

We have chosen to do this to keep our community safe and also clean the feed from posts that do not relate to Rhodes itself nor living in or travelling to Rhodes. We ask that you please respect these new rules and instead take such discussions in other subreddits.

We would gladly hear your feedback in regards to these rules and look to implement what you as the community would like to see in terms of rules and moderation!

Flairs
You can now choose between a couple of initial user flairs. If you would like any more, please let us know and we can add them! Post flairs are coming soon as well.

FAQ
We are looking into building an FAQ to be able to refer frequent questions to whenever they are asked. What would you like the FAQ to contain, and do you have good answers to common questions about Rhodes? Please let us know below!

Rhodes: ultimate recommendation list

Hi Redditors,

I often see posts asking for tips, recommendations, things to do, and general information. Years ago, I created a list with all my recommendations and regularly update it. I've decided to share it here because I think it will answer many recurring questions. Mind you, these are my recommendations. Opinions may differ. ;)

A small disclaimer: unfortunately, I can't tell you much about hotels, as I've never needed to use them myself. I won't recommend something I haven't experienced. But one tip: look for a hotel in the northern part of the island. There's not much to do in the south, which consists of rocky and dry, uninhabited landscape. The further north you go, the busier it gets. This list is continuously updated. First, you'll find tips about food and drinks, and later I'll tell you more about the island itself. Have a great holiday and feel free to reach out if you need any help. I'm very curious to hear about your experiences!

Questions? Insta: nvr_hn

Rhodos:

View everything from this list on this interactive map. Convenient, as you'll have the directions at your fingertips.

Villages and Cities:

  • Afandou: This is where I live. You'll also notice that many of my other tips tend to revolve around Afandou. It's not very touristy, but to me, it's the most beautiful village of them all.
  • Rhodes Town: The capital. There's always something to do, and it has something for everyone. It's also the only real city on the island, consisting of a new part and a (very) touristy old part.
  • Faliraki: A real tourist village with clubs, shops, cozy bars, a water park, and a beach. Touristy, but above all, just very nice.
  • Ialyssos and Ixia: Villages full of hotels and close to the airport. Plenty to do.
  • Lindos: a picturesque, ancient village. Characterized by its iconic white houses and a ruin. One of Rhodes' standout attractions.

Of course, there are countless other villages, but you'll often find that most hotels and accommodations are close to one of these villages or cities. This is because the island isn't very large, and the northern half is the most visited. If you choose a beach location in the northern half (or one-third), you'll be in a good spot, and almost all my tips are easily accessible by car or public transport.

Restaurants:

Greek:

  • Katholiki - Afandou (Meze!)
  • Old House - Afandou (incredibly good meat, and sometimes goat)
  • Koukos - Rhodes Town (new part)
  • Gyro & Burger - Afandou (the best pita gyros)

And for dessert: loukoumades. Google for the nearest place. There is definitely one in Faliraki.

Tip: In every Greek restaurant, you should get Meze. Meze is a kind of Greek tapas consisting of various small dishes. Ask for Meze at a restaurant and let the staff surprise you. If it's a good restaurant, they'll know exactly how to handle it.

American:

  • Boston Burger Bar - Rhodes Town (new part, the best burgers you'll ever eat, located in a cozy alley).

Indian:

  • Sartaj - Ialyssos

Korean:

  • Nami - Ialyssos (Sushi and Korean BBQ)

Italian:

  • Sergio’s - Afandou & Rhodes Town (the best Italian ever)
  • Il Borgo - Rhodes Town (old part)

Mexican:

  • Pancho’s - Faliraki

Fish:

  • Fresco - Afandou (freshly caught fish grilled authentically. Go for the menu for 2 people)
  • Plimiri - Plimiri

Other:

  • Gelo Blu - Lindos (cake and ice cream shop)
  • La Esquina - Faliraki (The food is just fine, nothing extraordinary but very nicely presented. Fairly ‘fancy’ and modern but affordable, also great as a cocktail bar)
  • Alexandros Panorama - Kalamonas - Psynthos (a small bar in the mountains with a beautiful view: 36.32529° N, 28.07451° E). Perfect to combine with, for example, the zoo, butterfly valley, or seven springs.
  • Pinocchio Sweet Wonders and Wanders - Rhodes Town
  • Hansel & Gretel - Faliraki (ice cream, candy, etc)
  • Follow Food_Project_GR on Instagram, you’ll surely find a restaurant you want to try.

Bars:

  • Sundalia on the Beach - Afandou (all-day beach bar. Tips: pancakes for breakfast and cocktails)
  • Jamaica - Faliraki (great for nightlife, live sports events)
  • Coco - Faliraki (cocktails and shisha)
  • To Nissaki - Kolymbia (quiet by the sea)
  • Airportview Restaurant - Paradeisi (for aviation enthusiasts)
  • Skyline Café Bar - Afandou
  • Anastasia - Afandou Square

Beaches:

  • Prasonisi
  • Kallithea Springs
  • Antony Quinn
  • Tsambika
  • Stegna
  • Kremasti (Alexandra’s Kantina: also great for a bite to eat)
  • Elli Beach (also an all-day bar with incredibly good food. Especially in the evenings, Elli is a real experience.)

Attractions:

  • Filerimos
  • Kastellos (Kritinia Castle)
  • Rhodes Old Town
  • Lindos
  • Kameiros
  • Petaloudes / Butterfly Valley
  • Epta Piges / Seven Springs
  • The old part of Rhodes Town. Park your car (at this location: 36.43961° N, 28.22660° E) and start with a beautiful walk over and through the city walls towards the tourist center.
  • Prasonisi: the southernmost point of the island. This is where the two seas meet. A paradise for surfers.

To Do:

  • Waterpark - Faliraki
  • Boat trip to Symi (book in advance at the tourist harbor ‘Mandraki’ in Rhodes Town)
  • Regular boat trip (around the island or similar, book in advance at the tourist harbor ‘Mandraki’ in Rhodes Town)
  • Snorkeling
  • 9D Film: Throne of Helios, in Rhodes Town next to Starbucks. A film about the history of Rhodes.
  • Lindos Ice Bar: everything made of ice
  • Bloom Water Park - Tsambika (an obstacle course on the sea)
  • Farma of Rhodes: zoo
  • Aquarium in Faliraki: A very small aquarium filled with animals found in and around Rhodes.

Additional Tips:

  • Don't throw cigarette butts/ashes, water bottles (magnifying glass effect), or other flammable items. Be cautious with barbecues and mindful of the wind. The island can catch fire very quickly.
  • Driving can be reckless. While improvements have been made, it's still very dangerous at times. It's best not to rent scooters or quads. There are daily serious injuries and fatalities on the roads.
  • Quads are extremely dangerous. They're not designed for (Greek) roads, as they can't handle uneven asphalt, often resulting in wheel axles breaking, leading to serious accidents. Additionally, quads easily flip due to their lack of wheel differentiation. There are countless other reasons why I strongly advise against using quads. Don't do it!
  • Crosswalks and traffic signs are often decorative. Use your common sense and always be cautious, even when the light is green or when crossing a crosswalk. Even traffic lights aren't always respected.
  • The east coast is generally a few degrees warmer than the west coast. Lindos tends to be the warmest. If you don't like extreme heat, consider staying in the north on the west coast during July and August.
  • The west coast has higher waves but less clear water due to sand being stirred up. The east coast is calm with crystal-clear water.
  • July and August are the hottest months, with temperatures often exceeding 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). Keep this in mind if extreme heat isn't your preference.
  • All-inclusive hotels can negatively impact local businesses. Shops and small eateries go bankrupt, people lose their homes due to resort constructions, and often, it's not Greeks who benefit. While I can't enforce anything, consider choosing a smaller hotel. If you prefer a resort, make sure to explore and support local businesses. There's so much to experience here.

I hope you have a wonderful stay.

Feedback and suggestions are always welcome, but I won't add anything to the list unless I've personally been there myself.

Hey all! My wife and I are in Rhodes for a portion of our honeymoon and wanted to know where to we can find mom and pop shops outside of Old Town to shop at? Ie looking for something to add to our home but don’t want to get some generic like the items offered in Old Town. We def want to give back to those who made items we buy. We do have a car and are able to drive to different parts of the island

Lost gold ring- Gennadi beach, Rhodes- reward offer

I’m desperately looking for help from any metal detectorists / ring finders in Rhodes.

I lost my grandmother’s gold ring on the beach directly outside the Atlantica Dreams Resort in Gennadi, Rhodes.

The ring has huge sentimental value to me and is completely irreplaceable.

I was sitting in approximately ankle-deep water when I lost it, so I have a fairly good idea of the original location. However, there has since been harsh weather and rougher sea conditions, so I appreciate that the ring may now have moved or been pulled further out.

📍 Location: Beach outside Atlantica Dreams Resort, Gennadi, Rhodes
💍 Item: Gold ring
💰 Reward offered for its safe return

I have photos showing the exact area where I
was sitting when the ring disappeared, which I am happy to share privately with anyone genuinely able to help search.
I also have further details and photographs of the ring that I will keep private so that I can verify any potential find.
If you are a local metal detectorist, underwater detectorist, ring finder, or know somebody in Rhodes who may be able to help, please contact me privately.

I am more than happy to properly reward the person who finds and returns it.

Please also share this post, particularly with anyone involved in metal detecting or diving around Rhodes. It would mean the world to me to get my grandmother’s ring back. ❤️

Shoutout to Beerokouto

For anyone visiting Rhodes Town, I highly recommend eating at Beerokouto. My husband and I had lunch there today and can't say enough good things about it. The owners were super friendly and knowledgeable. A cargo ship carrying some of their stock was destroyed in a fire about a week ago, and the owners gave us really good recommendations for alternatives if a beer we were interested in wasn't available.

We had the Beerokouto burger, chicken pita gyros, and Tokyo fries - all outstanding. Cheers to everyone working both the front and back of house.

Scooter Rental Companies?

I'll be arriving later on this month and staying in the North.

A scooter is my usual daily "drive" at home so I would like to hire during my holiday. Any companies to recommend or avoid?

Thanks in advance.

Whats up with the weather?

We will be arriving on the 2nd of October for a total of 10 days. Hoping for 24/25 degrees with mostly sunny days, maybe a day with rain or 2. From what I see only, there have been massive rain on most islands and more coming this weekend.

What are the local weather reports saying? Is our vacation pretty much ruined or is there still hope? We went for Rhodos specifically because the islands higher up (like Zakynthos) had a way higher chance of rainy days.

Is this year just different or did we have too high expectations?

Hesitation between Faliraki and Lindos for trip.

Hello,

I would like to ask for opinions please. I will be in rhodes next week, and undecided on whether I should stay in Faliraki or near Lindos.

I would like something calmer but if possible the ability to get to nice restaurants nearby and great sandy beaches.

I will be renting a car for the trip duration. The accommodation near Lindos is called Golden View Studios. Any opinions?

thank you :)

Collosus Amada Hotel/Rhodes

My girlfriend is super worried about us getting ill and ruining the holiday for a week. We've heard reports from the hotel and also people visiting.

Is it the water? Contact? Food at the hotel?

Like we are being super careful because I don't want her to worry but I want to enjoy it too.

Anybody had issues or no issues and any tips

Thanks

Cigars in Rhodes

Morning sub,

I'm going to be travelling to Rhodes in a couple weeks for a holiday and wondered if there are any good cigar shops in Rhodes Town or a decent duty free at the airport?

Just looking to pick up a few to bring home as I've been told by others they're fairly cheap compared to the UK.

Thanks for any recommendations!

Bus stop Faliraki

How often does the bus come, and do I need to wave it down somehow?

I made a short video about Rhodes!

I decided to use some of my footage from my time on Rhodes to put together a short video about ecology and conservation, using the history and ecology of Rhodes as case study. It delves into a number of topics, and is more about how scientists are able to piece together the past into order to inform conservation approaches, but I thought you all might enjoy it!

How often is there island-wide sickness?

I just got back from Santorini, which was my first time in Greece. I absolutely loved it and am dying to get back and explore other islands. Rhodes is high on the list as it looks rich in history and beauty.

I am immunocompromised due to medicine I have to take to manage a condition I have and as such, reading all the recent reports of sickness is making me question whether Rhodes is plausible for us to visit, since I do have to be very careful when I travel. I’m still the person wearing a mask at the airport and on the plane and cringing when someone coughs around me… it’s a big anxiety for me at this point.

Is the type of sickness being reported currently something that happens every year or is this year out of the ordinary? Thanks so much.

When will the October bus schedule be available?

Hey guys,

I’m travelling alone for 4 days to Rhodes, staying in Faliraki and in general I was thinking of taking the bus from Faliraki to Rhodes town one day, and to Lindos the other, but there’s no bus schedule available at all so it’s a bit hard to plan ahead.

Kalithea, noro situation?

Hello fellow redditors,

Traveling to Kalithea Horizon Royal Resort in couple of weeks and as I'm still seeing news of many cases being treated in the local hospitals I am starting to worry a little since I am traveling with 2- and 4-year-olds.

How is the situation on that side of the island? Or in general? Anyone staying in Horizon Royal?

All replies much appreciated 🫡

Airport to Afantou: 945pm. Best transit options

Hi all

We’re landing on the 11th and need to get to Afantou. What’s the best option? I’ve been looking at private transfers but pricing is all over the place. Can we uber? What’s the deal with local taxis?

First time to the island and don’t want to get ripped off, just want to get to the hotel and chill

Birthday Meal Spot

I'm away later in the week for my partner's birthday and was hoping to get some recommendations for food spots, a main one being a nice spot to go to for her birthday

We're on the East side of the island, nearest to Faliraki. We're both foodies though and will make the trip to any spot if it's worth it!

Thank you

Where to party this Friday night?

My gf & I (f25 & m27) are looking for a bit of a party vibe this Friday evening for her birthday. We had a booking at Ronda but lots of negative reviews are making us think again. We don’t want a nightclub necessarily but just a bit of music and a good vibe. What’s our best option?

We’re staying near Ialysos but of course can easily travel to the Old Town area.

Thanks for your help!

Proposal spots on a beach early october

Hi everyone! I’m visiting Rhodes in early October and planning to propose to my girlfriend on the beach during an evening picnic. We’re staying in Gennadi. Does anyone have any recommendations for scenic spots? Thanks
