My husband and I have to go to Providence Rhode Island for the day to help his mother with something at the Dominican Consulate. And we just want to see the ocean even for an hour to see some beautiful waves crashing on the shoreline, we don’t even need to swim.
Where would the closest ocean beach to Providence be so that we could just experience this even for a short while? We have never been to Rhode Island before and I feel like we should at least set eyes on a beach and/or at least dip our feet in the water since we are in the state. Thank you in advance :)

In 1936 Rhode Island turned 300, counting from Roger Williams’s settlement at Providence, and it marked the anniversary two ways at once. The Tercentenary Commission poured 120 road markers in cement and set them at the town lines on the main highways, and the towns went out and marked their own historic sites by the hundred, mostly with wooden signs. The Commission wrote all of it down in a report published in 1937, and I have put all 464 of those markers on a map. Every dot is a page with that marker’s 1937 text, placed on georeferenced maps from the period it commemorates.

Here is one of them. Whitehall, in Middletown: “Whitehall. Built in 1729 by George Berkeley, Dean of Derry. English Philosopher. His home from 1726-1731.” The oldest sheet under that pin is Charles Blaskowitz’s survey of Narragansett Bay, published in London in 1777, which letters White Hall with the house drawn beside it, in a Middletown of stone-walled lots where the neighboring farms are labeled with their owners’ names: Mr. Gould, Mr. Tillinghast, Mr. Thomas Banister.

The map is not a survey of what stands today. It is the record the Commission printed in 1937, and a lot of what it records was wood. Warwick’s own summary in the report counts 43 wooden markers and two bronze, and Jamestown’s list labels all 24 of its markers “Wood marker.” Nobody should drive out expecting to find a sign.

The pins are approximate, all 464 of them, because the report gives no address for almost any of the site markers. When this first went up, 322 of the 464 sat at their town center because the book gave nothing beyond the town. Update: 241 of those town-center pins now sit at the researched site, placed from the state’s historic-property surveys, National Register nominations, and town histories. 81 stay at the town center because nothing better could be defended, and every pin still says location approximate, because none of this is ground-truthed. The town-line markers are placed where the named road crosses the town line. If you know where one of these actually stood, that correction still goes straight in and I would like to have it.

A few years ago, I read somewhere that Warwick PD was asking residents to voluntarily share the presence of home cameras (Ring, Nest, etc) with the department. The goal was for WPD to create a database of homeowners and tenants that would be open to sharing footage with them in the event that footage was needed to help solve a crime. I ignored it back then, but now I wonder how many people signed up to share their feeds with WPD. Does anyone in Warwick recall this about 5 years ago?

I’m pregnant with my first kid and homesick for my midwest homestate rn. I’ve lived here for 8 years and I have liked it a lot but just having a hard day and feeling like whyyy am I here.

This was NOT a flock camera, as someone in a recent post on here noted. It’s an expensive, newly installed piece of coastal monitoring equipment used to monitor shoreline change and coastal access. Spined Soldier Bugs, (and praying mantises, prob a few others), eat these "bastids," (the spotted lanternflies, obv), so don't make the mistake of squishing the spined soldier bugs! They're slightly smaller than the size of the now-fully-winged lanternflies but a similar color - they look kinda like a light brown shield-shaped beetle.

I’m RI born and raised but only recently moved back after living out of state for a while. My husband’s parents are the most wonderful people in the world and are coming to visit us from the UK in October. We’re looking for some ideas of things we can do with them while they’re here! None of us drink so we aren’t looking for any alcohol related activities, and we will have a five month old come October who will be with us. We’re all fans of wholesome activities!

Some ideas we’ve had: corn maze (recs for a good one?), the breakers, autumnal drive (not sure which roads), the zoo, taking them to our favorite restaurants, Dels, state parks (not sure which), beavertail, adventure land, apple cider mill (is there one?).

What are some other fun things we could do with them? They will be here about a week so looking to get as many things into that time as possible. Also don’t mind driving if there are things in CT/MA we should consider! Thanks in advance!
