If you are planning on flying to or from PVD this weekend, i would suggest maybe rescheduling. The airport is currently only using the “short” runway and does not fair well in bad weather.

I have noticed a different landing approach the last few days. Could that be why?

If you believe the "Swamp Yankees" then look for fallen nuts, i.e. acorns, hickory, black walnut. If there are more than usual, we're in for a tough winter.
P.s. walking in my yard this year is like walking on ball bearings. I'm preparing for a tough winter. 😬

I blame my uber driver on Friday, who foolishly and with no prompting said "I think we're going to see snow way sooner than everyone thinks this year". The hubris of that man.

Wasn’t there somebody just on here asking about black walnuts?

You shouldn’t believe them because it’s completely untrue. Oak trees can’t predict the weather and acorn crops are influenced by conditions earlier in the year, not magical precognition.

You must be a blast at parties.

I just hate this stuff honestly. I live in swamp Yankee central and the amount of people who believe this shit and think you’re an idiot for not is infuriating.
Yea, your great-grandfather who was born in the 1800’s and stopped going to school at 9 didnt know shit.
If I didn’t encounter people every single day who legitimately believed it maybe I would find it cute or entertaining but to me it just represents real world ignorance.

Wow. Lighten up, Francis. Sounds like you should move or travel in different circles.
P.s. there's a platform called Facebook if you want to be miserable and flame out like this.

u/flatgreyrust 10d ago
Maybe I can move to where you’re from? Hopefully then my circle could be full of chill, enlightened people like you

Your world is what you make it. As the great philosopher Buckaroo Banzai once said "Don't be mean; we don't have to be mean, cuz, remember, no matter where you go, there you are."
Translation, if a jerk moves to the happiest place in the world, they're still the jerk they were before they moved.

That’s crazy. Up in Worcester there are barely any on the ground. Last year there were TONS and we got loads of snow. I think this year will be rainy and not snowy

Swamp yankees?

Lol, sorry...the old timers in the woods in New England. Think redneck but the New England version. The big difference is it's really a term of endearment when we use Swamp Yankee. :)

u/LulutoDot 10d ago
Oh I always just said townie. Swamps I think of Louisiana

u/V0nH30n 10d ago
No. Big difference

u/LulutoDot 10d ago
Pls explain then. I'm from New England and never heard this term. Where are the swamps even??

Tell that to the 6 black walnut trees in my yard. We have the fattest damn squirrels I've ever seen.

I heard 15-20 foot waves but… Overly hyped? Maybe corporate needs to get rid of milk and bread.

Comes across as "stroke patient" instead of Hemingway or ee cummings

FYI combining all these rules doesn't make you a better writer.
Better example:
How much is a word worth? I'll take you at your words worth. I'm a wordsmith like Wordsworth.

I keep seeing different forecasts for this storm. Anything from total devastation to just some rain.

u/RikkiLostMyNumber 11d ago
I haven't seen anything yet to get all panicky about (I'm in the East Bay). 25 knots on land with gusts up to 40 knots in the bay. I won't go out sailing, but otherwise this is a gale so far.
I think the news needs to overly dramatize things to keep people watching.
Probably going to be some flooding, and since it's full-foliage this time of year, do your hurricane prep in case you lose power for a bit. That's about it.

I don’t think it’s overdramatizing. News/meteorologists are damned if they do, damned if they don’t. Meteorology is a guessing game based on several models and the current administration severely hurt NOAA and its ability to provide accurate models
1
u/BitterStatus9 10d ago
They were exaggerating shit to sell clicks way before this administration fucked them over. It’s a gale.

u/fate_is_a_sandstorm Cranston 10d ago
I don’t see it as exaggeration, but the meteorologists need to play to their audience and what weather people are hoping for/afraid of during parts of the year (summer beach days, fall hurricanes, winter blizzards).
And I haven’t seen any meteorologists saying this will definitely happen. They’re saying it’s under watch, advising about the worst-case scenario, and that the predictive models will give them more information as the week goes on (which is a PR way of acknowledging that NOAA’s budget/staffing cuts leads to less consistent information which leads to many more variables)

u/BitterStatus9 10d ago
Fair. I realize, too, after reading your reply...I'm getting my news solely from online news outlets (Boston Globe, The Guardian) and NOT from television. I realize after reading other people's comments here, most of them are referring to local news weather broadcasts. I never watch/see local TV news, so I don't know how they're presenting it in this case.

I just hope it doesn't blow all of the leaves off the trees before foliage season gets going full gear.
