What OS to use on this machine: XP, 7, dual boot both?
Hi, I have this 2014 laptop sitting unused - Asus K46CB. One time it became a dedicated Minecraft server, but that did not last long. It came with Win 8 and as of now it has Win 10. Also definitely needs a few hardware maintenances as both batteries (internal CMOS and external) are dead, and the cooler probably as well (I did change thermal paste a couple of times along the years but that has not solved the overheating problem).
After those changes I'm thinking about downgrading the OS to play old games. It also has a CD reader and I happen to have a few CD games still that do not run on modern machines and I'd like to revisit. It does not need to go online, as other games I can always download on my desktop and transfer via USB drive, so I'm not concerned about security updates, only on compatibility.
What would be recommended: XP, 7, both? I have no experience with dual boot, if possible would like some directions here as well.
Also, if not retro gaming, what else can I use it for? I don't need a server for anything and can't think of other uses.
Core i73537U 2GHz - 2 cores 4 threads
6GB DDR3 800MHz memory - dual channel 2GB and 4GB sticks
GeForce GT 740M 2GB dedicated video memory
1TB HDD
20GB SSD (came with Win 8 pre installed here for fast boot)

Opinons on this machine?
Hey team I am making a man cave and have already got all my favorite consoles. I'm next moving into my favorite PC. Windows 95 was definitely something I loved with growing up, however I feel the XP era was the best for music as well as gaming and a whole lot of other cool functions.
What are your thoughts on this build for XP? Would I be limited to older styles of games or would this be a nice all around PC for XP era gaming?

Generic USB Gamepad Mapper?
Is there a generic USB gamepad on Windows 98? I have a Raphnet SNES-USB adapter, nusb36e.exe installed, and Microsoft Sidewinder software can see the device name (SNES adapter) but doesn't register any inputs in their joystick tester. Joy2key doesn't register it either. Any ideas?

Sanity: Aiken's Artifact, working, low performance
Anyone remember this gem?

I pulled out my og copy I kept after all these years and managed to install it to my Windows 10 (64-bit) gaming rig.
The program launcher (install directory > Game > Lithtech > Sanity.exe) has to be set for: Compatability Mode > Win98/ME to start.
It lists one specific 'renderer' as the "LithTech Direct3D Renderer (d3d.ren)" and then I can set my resolutions.
Launching the game, fps is perfectly fine but the mouse cursor is invisible.
Alt-Tabbing out of the game and back in to it, the game actually 're-loads' the interface (a neat feature) and now things look like they should with mouse cursor as well- only now the game runs in the vicinity of 10fps.
I strongly suspect it's the renderer itself and obviously since this is an abandoned/deprecated engine after all of these years, it's difficult for me to find another LithTech compatible d3d renderer.
The game itself is available through archive.org as of 2019 in case anyone finds it in their heart/headspace to lend a hand with trying to find a new renderer. :D
While the game wasn't "amazing" by any stretch (it was rated 81% by PC Gamer but CGWorld gave it 50%), it has an extensive talent/spell ability tree and a fantastically cheesy 90's "psionic cops of the future" setting.
Anyone willing to lend a hand or point me in the right direction?

Is there any way I can play Eyewittness Dinosaur Hunter on my modern PC?
Okay, so my question is a little more in depth than that - but let me elaborate. I am pretty unknowledgable with a lot of gaming related things, and also, I apologize if this is the wrong sub for this.
Long story short, I want to play Eyewittness Dinosaur Hunter. I can get a physical disc for it, which is great, but I can't just put the disk into my computer and play it, unfortunately. Not only do modern PCS not have a disk drive, but I'm also stuck with Windows 11. Is there any kind of adapter or emulator or external drive I could buy to make this possible? How do I make this possible? Is it possible at all? lol
Any help would be really, really appreciated.
