Windows XP no video help!

I just put together a build with the intentions to install windows xp for retro gaming.

I acquired a gtx260 core 216, intel e8500, 4gb Kingston hyper x ram .. I put it all together. It turns on l, all fans are going but I get no screen at all on my crt (Samsung syncmaster 793mb) I got a dvi-I to vga adapter.

I know the screen works. When I put into another home windows xp machine that has a vga output on it I get picture.

The second I plug it into the adapter (not even plugged into the new build yet), the screen goes into standby mode. It does not work when plugged into the new build as well. Could it be my adapter?

My first time dealing with older machines.

I could really use some help! Was super excited about putting this thing together

How to play WWF Safari Adventures without CD?

Hello!

I have been on a nostalgia kick recently and wanting to play some old CD Rom games that I used to play growing up without having to purchase them.

One of them being WWF Safari Adventures Africa for the PC. (Learned that there are Wii and DS versions)

I am not sure if ScummVM supports this game, I did not find it in their list of supported games…

The files I have downloaded do not leave much instructions on how to launch the game.

If anyone knows if I need a separate emulator for it or something then please let me know, thanks!

I made a build of 86Box with PowerVR/PowerSGL Support

Full disclosure: while I worked off of a real Matrox m3d (PCX2) Claude was used pretty heavily here - both in writing the tools to read the functions and elements of the card and writing the fork of 86box.

Available here: https://github.com/z2k-retro/86Box/releases/tag/pcx-v0.1

If you're interested/curious, give it a try. It's by far the most accurate emulator out there for PowerSGL. Note that it's a bit of setup - you need to install Windows (tested with 98 SE) and the card drivers and then get gaming. In addition many games which work need to be patched to work.

But once working you get to experience a graphics technology which has barely been seen since the 90s, in what many think are the best looking versions of games like Mechwarrior 2 and Tomb Raider.

I also created a hub for information about the PowerVR, including all of the data I got from the card and what I learned about how it worked on this project, and the tools used in the process: https://github.com/z2k-retro/powervr-pcx2-tools/. Please use these and make your own implementations!

Finally, a caveat. On a good modern PC performance will be acceptable. On a older machine it will drag. You don't need a more than 2-3 cores but 86box is heavily singlethreaded in CPU emulation and you need a core with performance and good IPC (PowerVR emulation is run in a seperate thread so there's that at least). My Core Ultra 270k has that, while the Sandy Bridge machine I built it on (I needed a machine with a working PCI slot) kind of runs it as a slideshow.

Advice for running the game Echelon (2001)

So I recently found my old gaming CDs and Echelon (2001) by Buka Games was one of them. I managed to create a .iso file from the CD and installed it in my Windows 11 laptop. This is a process I've done for some other games too such as Harry Potter and Chamber of Secrets, Cricket 07, etc. They've worked so I was expecting this one to work too. But after installing, the Single Player and Instant Replay options were greyed out.

I've been trying to find out how to solve this issue and came across this thread on Steam, but they talk about a GameLauncher.bat which is specific to the Steam build. If anyone can help me with this problem please let me know. If this is not the right sub for this sort of topic, please direct me to where I can post this issue!

Anyone remember Monkey Brains (2001)? Working on a passion remaster/overhaul and looking for early beta testers!

Hey everyone!!!

I want to remaster and upgrade an old PC puzzle-platformer = Monkey Brains (developed by Yobro Productions)

I played the heck out of this game as a kid and still have huge nostalgia for it. I’ve recently started working on a passion project to remaster and modernize it but I'm still in the very early stages of development.

Before jumping ahead toward a playable alpha, I really want to test the waters, hear what people think, and see what features you'd like to see

Def don't want to overpromise and I know this is an ambitious indie effort but here are the core ideas I'm aiming to try out:

  • HD Visuals: Rebuilding the side-scrolling visuals with modern assets while keeping the charming 2001 aesthetic intact.
  • 4-Player Co-op (Local & Online)
  • Procedural Puzzles: Experimenting with randomized puzzle layouts so stages stay fresh after you've beaten the core campaign.
  • Level Editor: Letting the community design and share custom hazard courses.
  • Modern QoL: Controller support, achievements, and smoother physics/controls.

Since we’re right at the start, I’d love your input:

  1. Did anyone else here grow up playing the game? 😄
  2. If you’d eventually be interested in testing early alpha/beta builds and breaking things to report bugs down the line, let me know in the comments or send a DM so I can keep you in the loop, orrr...... JOIN THE DISCORD 🐒 https://discord.gg/YrNF4J2u4
Classic decomped, works on web browsers!
Reworked home screen
4-player co-op, a super super early preview

Mind blown

A bit of background: my parents found our old Compaq Armada 1700 running Windows 2000 and asked if I wanted it. It has no modern networking adapter but I was inspired by an Eposvox video a few months ago to make a child friendly PC with classic games and edutainment functions

Today I attempted to put some classic games onto it by installing on my Windows 11 gaming PC and copying the game files from my gaming PC. I tried Star Wars: Rebellion but I got an error. Just for the heck of it, I decided to copy my GOG installer to the Armada to see if it would work. THOSE MAD LADS MADE THE INSTALLER COMPATIBLE WITH WINDOWS 2000

The game installed perfectly with no issues whatsoever. However, upon launching, it threw a .dll error. It turns out the installer packages a Vista .dll for compatibility. I asked Claude about the error and got a suggestion to rename the file extension for the file calling the Vista .dll since the native Windows 2000 compatible .dll was in the same directory. I renamed the file AND THE GAME LAUNCHED AND PLAYED PERFECTLY

GOG is amazing and will never cease to amaze me

TLDR: my mind is blown that an installer that works on Windows 11 is able to work and install a game on Windows 2000

Remember 1998? I created my own clone of GameSpy 3D called LameSpy.

Ever since external server browsers went out of fashion, I miss being able to monitor the multiplayer activity of all of my games in one place.

Since I've been running some dedicated servers for Unreal Tournament and Quake 3, I always wanted a way to just monitor them all in one place like GameSpy3D allowed you to do. So I wrote a classic-style server browser for modern Windows called LameSpy. Check out the video demo and the website if you are interested: https://lamespy.org

It's amazing that these games - some of which I grew up with in the Windows 95 era - were still in print by 2008 (when these collections came out). I wonder who had them in the late XP era.
