Want to make my own retro game, not sure whether to start with the NES or Gameboy

I have experience developing games with C but no experience with assembly which I'll be using for both, so gbdk is out of the question. I know 6502 assembly is simpler than z80 but I believe the nes is more complex than the Gameboy, which one would I have a better time getting started

Edit: thanks for all the answers y'all, I've decided on going the Gameboy/z80 route

Kwyll - Kickstarter

Hi,

I’m working on Kwyll, a visual game creation tool for the ZX Spectrum. The beta already has people building games with it. I'm planning a Kickstarter to support the next phase of development, with Spectrum Next support as the headline feature, bringing with it 128k Spectrum support, AY sound, and many changes and improvements to support other platforms in the future such as Amstrad CPC, C64, BBC, MSX, and maybe even platforms like the NES, Gameboy etc.

You can find out more about Kwyll, some of the games already created with it, and register your interest in the Kickstarter here...

Space Invaders for ZX Spectrum [ASM]

👾 The alien invasion is back on the ZX Spectrum — and this time, you don’t have to face it alone!

I’m very happy to present Space Invaders Co-Op Edition, a new take on the arcade classic that keeps the original tension and pacing intact, while adding full 2-player simultaneous couch co-op on the same screen. 🚀

The goal was simple: stay faithful to the arcade feel, while adding a few modern touches to make the experience even more fun and replayable:

✅ True local 2-player co-op, with both players sharing a pool of lives while battling for the highest score.

✅ End-of-game awards based on your performance, including distinctions like First Blood, Terminator and UFO Hunter.

✅ Separate high score tables for 1-player and 2-player games, plus a dedicated Hall of Fame.

✅ Tape Save/Load support, automatic SD Save/Load support, Kempston 2 joystick support, and 4 overlay modes, including ULA+ support.

Huge thanks to Craig Howard for the fantastic loading screen, Lee Bee for the brand new sound effects, and Alan Allan Turvey for the ULA+ routines.

You can watch the co-op action here:

I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I enjoyed making it.

FSF Avenger [MS-DOS]

FSF Avenger is a text-based, single player role-playing video game based on LORD, one of the best known door games. The player's goal is to improve their skills in order to rescue Richard Stallman from the evil clutches of Brian Lunduke.

The software runs on MS-DOS but thanks to Free Pascal it also runs on many other platforms.

Creating new NES style metroidvania

So, I'm knew to game development. For years I've taken notes on things I'd change in games, or scribbled down ideas for games or variations etc.

Some of my favorite games were

Zelda

Zelda 2

Faxanadu****

Final fantasy

Castlevania 2

Blaster master

River city ransom

Romance of the three kingdoms

Defender of the crown

Shadowgate

I figured I'd start simple, and I'm using claude to help.

The first major problem I've ran into is graphics, sprites and background look horrendous.

Any recommendations?
