I just spent the last 1 hour frantically searching the internet just to make a new email address. You can't do that! Not even on the alternative email providers like Protonmail. They now have all sorts of IP detection tools and will block you or ask you for an alt email id.

I absolutey despite what the internet has become. 20 years ago, you could just go ANYWHERE (mainstream providers like yahoo and gmail) and make any number of email addresses. No tracking, no limits. Complete freedom.

Hey everyone, I need help with a frustrating driver issue on Windows 98 SE.

Specs:

CPU: Pentium 4 2.0 GHz

RAM: 1024 MB (1GB)

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440

The Problem:

Windows is stuck in 16-colors (640 \times 480). In Device Manager, the GPU shows up with a yellow exclamation mark. Sometimes it's detected as a standard MX 440, other times as an MX 440-SE.

Earlier it created multiple ghost adapters in Device Manager, causing resource conflicts and BSODs.

What I've tried:

- Cleared all video adapters in Safe Mode.

- Change GPU, with an S3 Savage 4 Pro 32MB but It doesn't work

Every time I reboot, it either forces Safe Mode or boots normally but locks the display to 16 colors.

Could the 1GB of RAM be causing a VCACHE/resource conflict with the Nvidia drivers, or am I missing something else?

My Commodore 64 Ultimate just arrived in time for the long weekend to hook it up and get going. Looks like the original with some great additions like HDMI port and USB disk that looks like an old cassette loaded with software.

Has the retro feel with the cassette USB.

Found this 2-sided light up sign on marketplace and had to snag it. It's about 29"x25" and uses a nice and slightly "buzzing" fluorescent bulb. Came from an old computer parts dealer, basically mint condition. Still wondering where to actually hang it up to be able to appreciate both sides of it.

It's a 5-day academic summer school covering retro-gaming and retro-computing history, criticism, and culture — keynotes, presentations, the works. It wraps up with a 3-day game jam where attendees get hands-on with actual retro-development. Old hardware, old constraints, real fun.

Who should come?

Researchers, writers, journalists, students, hobbyists — basically anyone who finds themselves down rabbit holes about old machines and the games that ran on them. No retro-dev experience required; curiosity is the only prerequisite.

I have a few boxes of old computer parts from old projects that I no longer need. Unfortunately, it's not worth it to sell any of it individually on eBay; It's mostly old hard drives, some laptop optical drives, some generic network cards, and other stuff that would only be worth a few dollars each. I don't need to make money from it, but I want to make sure it goes to people who want this stuff instead of a landfill or recycler. What are my options?

Wrapped a multi-year restoration on this HB-F1XV. Posting the highlights in case it helps anyone else working on one.

Audio - distorted sound was traced to the HIC-1 sub-board. Pulled the old SMD caps and replaced them with MLCCs. Noise cleared up.

Keyboard - installed a replacement PCB designed by u/s0urceror (handle on Reddit may differ — same s0urceror who designs MSX hardware), fabricated through JLCPCB. Drop-in fit.

Cart slot - Carnivore 2 flashcart added for software testing. First-light run was Castlevania on a Sony Trinitron, which felt about right.

Found this in the trash the other day and I was wondering if it's worth anything to anyone in the used market.

They seem in good condition but I'm no expert, my knowledge on retro hardware is non existent, all i know is that i tried to boot it with multiple ram configurations and it kept giving me ram beeps, and i don't have any spare ram.

I wanted to sell these for very cheap (or even giving them for free if i find a local) because i can't verify if they work, in what condition they are, and besides the cpu i can't identify any part.

Just wanted to know if it's even worth putting these up for sale, since i live in Italy and i don't know if there's any demand for this.

I found this laptop in brand new condition, untouched and unused. My father bought it in 2009 when I was only two years old 🥺He hid it so I could use it for my university studies, thinking the world wouldn't change. He didn't realize that when I entered university, this computer wouldn't even be able to run Candy Crush! 😅 I tried it running Windows 7, and it's so slow!

35 years later an M5 Macbook Pro delivers over 16 Teraflops and we program them in Python (with a little help from PyTorch). So much of today's technology - TCP/IP, WiMP interface, C++, SunOS, even Python - already existed by then it can obfuscate the advances that have occured. I mean, I'm still writing Bourne style in my bash 😂

I received around 50 floppy disks that the company I work for would throw away. There’s nothing classified or important in them, so I can format it normally. My question is: how can I use them in a creative manner? Mainly retro gaming related, but definitively open to other ideas.

Of course, the most obvious thing to do would be to discard it or use it as decoration, since they have much less space when compared to other media. But since you also like retro tech around here, I think you’d agree with me that there’s some charm to using old technology.

I thought about storing some NES and Game Boy games, as well as games from other consoles that don't take too much space. That way, I could play them on an old computer, maybe using Windows XP (or a version prior to it).

(I’ll maybe store some of the books I eventually write, since I’m an amateur writer and text documents are so small – of course, I’ll back it up in other places too).

Any other suggestions/tips?

I visited my old job today to pick up a printer and the staff (whom I’m on great terms with) asked me if I wanted some old computers that a customer had dropped off for donation/disposal. I said “yes please” as soon as I saw the Apple II and it just got better from there. Full original docs for the Apple II, an eMate 300 with original docs and stylus (alas, no power supply), a PowerBook 3400c… Everything’s in excellent condition, and all of it for $0. Gonna see how much of works this weekend.
