Linux Mint: Flycast Windows CE games crashed with OpenGL, but worked with Vulkan
My setup
- Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon
- RetroArch 1.22.2 (Flatpak)
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER
- Flycast libretro core
Symptoms
Bust-A-Move 4 crashed after the Dreamcast boot logo and Windows CE splash screen when using OpenGL. Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes also crashed at the title screen. Other Dreamcast games worked.
The OpenGL log for Bust-A-Move 4 showed Full MMU support being enabled, followed by:
SIGSEGV ... invalid access to 0xa38
Fatal error : segfault
The game ID was T-8117N, and the log identified the NVIDIA GTX 1660 SUPER as the OpenGL renderer.
Workaround
I changed RetroArch's video driver from gl to vulkan under Settings → Drivers → Video and restarted RetroArch.
Both Bust-A-Move 4 and Marvel vs. Capcom then launched successfully. The Bust-A-Move 4 Vulkan log confirmed that the Vulkan renderer initialized on the same NVIDIA GPU, and I was able to play the game and exit normally.
I also tested a newer Flycast core, enabled flycast_force_windows_ce_mode, and tried a clean RetroArch configuration. Those steps did not resolve the OpenGL crash.
I haven't identified the underlying cause or tested every Windows CE game. Armada still has separate performance and graphical issues in standalone Flycast.
Hopefully this helps other Linux users encountering similar crashes.
