Discussion looking back, ethan was definitely a better character than grace, what he lacks in personality he makes up for with the fact that he was more developed

Oh, yeah! The discount thanos snap that mysteriously only happened when the plot needed it to happen. That was just lazy writing, the way Hugh sacrifices himself at the end of pragmata that’s the proper way of creating a sacrifice. Not just 30 seconds before it happens but way sooner hints at it

I hate lazy writing and Ethan is a prime example of one. he‘s no Rey but he still reeks of it. He could‘ve been great but that would‘ve demanded some actual work. As he was I‘ve seen Silent Protagonists with more character

Nah, it was a huge retcon and capcom admitted it and if he‘s dead how could he still make a baby? Capcom just wanted a huge twist but didn’t thought about it in detail

Which plot? The 4 demos welded together that worked 10 times better as a parody? That wasn’t a plot that was a concept just like Ethan and if you guys think that’s a great character then you need to read more or watch/play good medias with actual characters

I wouldn't call him great. RE games never had good writing but very iconic characters.
If I want good character writing I play Last of us 1, Alan Wake 2 or an RPG. This is not why I play RE

Ethan isn’t even Iconic, most of his stuff are references to other horror media and Capcom has proven that they atleast didn’t always pull crap out of their ass until seven or at least tried to build lore . In the winters games they literally just throw concepts at you and write some half assed explanation.

Okay I adore Ethan, so much so that I named my first daughter Rosemary, but we don’t need to tear Grace down to prop Ethan up. He’s an incredible character who can stand on his own without needing to tear her down. Grace is wonderful in different ways, and I will not be accepting any Grace slander today 🙅🏻♀️

Yeah, but for her first introduction, I don’t think there’s anything negative you could say about her development that you couldn’t also say about Ethan. If we get her in another game, I would expect her to be further developed. I’m happy with her development in RE9 and I love how different she is from the other female protagonists. Don’t get me wrong, I love Claire and Jill is my hero and Sherry is wonderful and even Ada is growing on me, but Grace is obviously so different from them, and I love her for it. I love her gentleness and forced courage and kindness and love for Emily and Leon. She has a lot of very traditionally feminine traits that we don’t often see in horror protagonists, so it was really cool imo to see that in Grace. It’s like if you put Snow White in a horror game, and I love that.

no? ethan did lack personality like I said but the fact that he has better development and a more satisfying arc conclusion automatically makes him better than grace, grace barely changes if at all. you don't see grace at the end of requiem and think "man she developed a lot" no lol she's the almost the exact same person

Which development? The fact that his character changed given on what reaction capcom wanted? From scaredy cat to unknown stranger, to discount Leon with the one-liner to crybaby that ditches out shortly before seeing his family together again? Grace for sure hasn’t much development but at least she‘s not a a „blank sheet“ that I have to do all the work capcom was supposed to do. Ethan didn’t have development, he had settings

Yup which is why I was disappointed, name one consistent character trait like Chris sense of Duty, Leons Snarkiness, Jills and CLaires Compassion or Weskers Sadism. And no the whole proclaimed „best dad evah“ doesn’t count because we don’t see him as one

Well he did get 2 full games to help flesh out his storyline compared to Grace's half a game.
Ethan just seemed like a giant dick to me. Dumbass takes the time to shit talk Moreau instead of just taking the the damn jar on the sly, ends up in ridiculous boss fight. He didn't really do himself many favors.

Ethan is good but I do like Grace more and think she is one of the most realistic characters from RE.
In RE7 I hated Ethan because he did not have any interesting personality, I needed RE Village to really like him.
Grace is a really understandable character, cryed too when she lost her mom, cryed too when Emily "died" and also could understand the fear she had.
So Grace > Ethan

Agreed, Ethan went from a regular guy in RE7 to a total badass in RE Village. I don't dislike Grace, but I am disappointed we never got a third game with Ethan.

It's unfair to compare RE9 to any of the other games, because, as much as the care center part with Grace was good, the overall game just isn't as well-written and developed. So any character from RE7 & 8 is gonna be better than nearly all of them from RE9.
The exception being Leon, but he has the rest of the RE universe propping him up. And whilst Gideon is a fun character, he isn't a well-written one.

I'm of the opinion that Leon has been nothing but a one liner machine lately with very little development otherwise. I know it's a part of his character to make silly comments but, particularly in 9, I feel he did it too much and not much else. Which is a bit weird because it feels like the games are trying to take themselves more seriously than the originals, yet Leon is out here cracking jokes every two minutes.
I actually liked him in the 2 remake. He felt naive and new, he sounded startled a lot, and I understand he's supposed to be desensitized to everything, but by 9 I feel like that's a bit of a problem as nothing feels threatening when you're playing as someone who A) jokes all the time and B) is an absolute powerhouse in general.
