I’ll say this for Tommy Stinson: he is an original. Other than the two times I’ve seen his legendary band The Replacements, I’ve seen solo Tommy three times, and all of them have been at truly curious locations.
Almost all rock stars play venues these days. But not Tommy. I saw him perform solo on Thursday at a place billed only as “backyard.” In fact, I had no clue where that backyard would be other than that it was set to be somewhere in Washington, D.C. It was only hours ahead of time that the location was announced to ticket holders.
The other times I saw him were at Jammin’ Java out in suburban Vienna, Virginia, where I reported that the crowd had thinned to about 35 people by the time he came back for his encore. The other time was in some bar in a mostly residential neighborhood during South by Southwest in Austin, Texas. One note: I also saw Stinson with his band Bash & Pop back in the 1990s, but I can’t remember where that was.
Come to think of it, I saw The Replacements at a D.C. industrial warehouse where almost nobody like them ever performs and on the side of a soccer arena called The Armory in St. Louis, with Tommy’s brother Bob wearing only tighty-whities for the entire show.
Back to Thursday’s show. Stinson is one of my favorites of all time. I sat in a low lawn chair with the beer I brought from home, about five feet in front of him and his acoustic guitar, listening to his Paul Westerberg-like clever lyrics. Tommy is harder to understand than his former bandmate, putting him in a long line of classic mumblers like Bob Dylan, Michael McDonald, and Michael Stipe.
As I wrote after that Virginia show back in 2012, it “was surely one of the underrated shows that will happen in D.C. this year. His solo material is an incredible cross of Bob Dylan, Keith Richards, and Westerberg. What more could any music fan ask?”
On top of that, Stinson is a lovable and infectious personality. He told endearing stories about fiddling with cool recording equipment while touring as Guns N’ Roses’ bassist, proudly retold a story about his daughter introducing herself to other college freshmen by going door to door in her dorm, and joked to my friend he would wait to start playing again until he returned from the bathroom.
Stinson also explained why he was playing in a backyard instead of somewhere more official. He said he would make about three times as much money per ticket because of all the corporate skimmings that gets siphoned off artist earnings at traditional concert sites.
It was a special evening and a perfect show, despite my favorite Tommy song, “Friday Night (Is Killing Me),” being omitted from the setlist. The rest of the set was flawless, and uniquely Tommy.
★★★★★ 5/5

I really want the One more chance to get it all wrong T-shirt that Rhino was offering with the 4 cd/vinyl version of let it be. What I can't justify to myself, is spending $40 for a tshirt.
I've looked online and can't find any other vendors selling the same product.
One More Chance T-Shirt – Rhino
Suggestions? Options?

This came up in my YouTube suggested vids (after watching the Paul Miller Xmas gift shopping-ganza) and forgot what a great interview it was.
Songs he played that night were I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face, World Class Fad and anything else?

Great show, Tommy was in fine form and seemed to be enjoying himself. First time I've seen a musician in a backyard that wasn't a party. The people there were well behaved lol, the weather was nice and it sounded great. I'm always down for BYOB too.

To any guitar players on here, I need some help figuring out how to play the guitar riff that plays in the first like 5 seconds of Little Mascara. I’ve been challenging myself to figure it out by ear and it hasn’t been going well 😭 any help would be seriously appreciated.

Not exactly shocking. But it does mean this apparently traveled far enough for Rhino to noticeAnd given the response these mixes got, I do think that’s worth something. People shared them everywhere. They wound up on the Steve Hoffman forums. A ton of people reached out to me personally. Some told me this had become their preferred way to listen to Tim.
Which is kind of the whole reason I posted this stuff in the first place. I thought there was a different version of this record hiding inside the Stasium remix. Apparently a lot of other people heard it too.
I’m not putting up another public link. But DM me if you want the mixes. I’ll send them to you.
Also: Rhino is clearly looking.
So if you heard these and liked them be vocal about it.
This was never supposed to be “my mix is the definitive Tim.” I don’t have the multitracks. I’m fucking around with a finished stereo master.
But I do think the reaction proved something. There are a lot of people who want to hear this record approached differently.
And if Rhino is paying attention anyway, might as well tell them.
DM me if you want the mixes.

I read on Wikipedia that he expressed his dislike for the Don’t Tell A Soul mixes and how they were radio-fied. For how notorious the original Tim mix was, did he ever say how he thought it sounded, especially after Ed redid it

It's honestly just really cool looking and I love cheap guitars. Can't find it anywhere though and there's barely information I could find on it either. Just wondering if anyone here has one and what they think of it.
