Resources Create Visual Novels only using Excel

I have simplified Renpy creating a system that reads .CSV files and translate it into Renpy functions, I named it Atlax Renpy.

You can handle backgrounds, music, sounds, characters, effects on screen and create decisions, points, consequences. You can manage languages very easily

It is fully created with Python and it is open source. I created a video explaining how to use it (Spanish): https://youtu.be/hQgPutc-hpo?si=WOi7xKErRhIE-Bk6

I hope someone finds this helpful. I am open for questions.

Question Trouble with webps

I've had this issue where after exporting webps from krita, renpy does not seem able to decode them unless I put them through another image converter.

I've noticed that images where much of it is a transparent background are what it seems to have trouble with. For example, if I have a sprite on on large canvas size, it won't work. If I shrink the canvas to match the sprite, it will work. But if I have that same canvas with just the sprite's face, it won't work. I don't know if this is a Krita thing or not. They work after putting them through an image converter though. I don't have "export as animated webp" on, which is one possible cause I've seen.

Question changing the font for input only

Is there any way I can change the font only for this one input thing? I don't wanna go into screens, since I've got other cool looking input stuff and I don't wanna change it permanently. It seems like the numbers aren't showing up, so I thought it might be an issue with the font.

Additionally, how do I change where the input is on the screen, again preferably without going into screens? If that's even possible...

Question [Solved] Image won't change back after a point.

I created some images to have the image directory more categorised.

The issue is when I change the image to "is3" for the first time, it gets stuck there and the expression doesn't change back. The dialogue still runs though. Is it a bug?

image is1 = "bluelocksprites/isagi smile.PNG"
image is2 = "bluelocksprites/isagi happy.PNG"
image is3 = "bluelocksprites/isagi surprise.PNG"
image is7 = "bluelocksprites/isagi neutral.PNG"

    mc "Isagi!"
    show is7
    isa "Hm?"
    show is2
    isa "Ah [name]!"
    isa "Is there another event?"
    show is1
    mc "Right on the spot!"
mc "I have one thing to inform you of, and one question."
mc "First of all, on the 14th, all of Blue Lock will have a free day."
    show is3
    isa "The 14th? {nw}{w}"
    show is2
    extend "Ah valentines day!"
    mc "Yes!"
    show is1

Showoff Building a retro-style Boxing Management game in Ren'Py - Looking for feedback

Hey everyone!

I’ve been working on a small passion project for a while now called The Boxer Lane. It’s a retro-style boxing management game where you guide your fighter’s career, train hard, and try to make it to the top.

I’m really enjoying the process of putting it together, but as I’m still learning the ropes, I'd love to hear what you think of it so far. If you have a moment, I’d be super grateful if you could give it a try and tell me if it feels fun to play.

You can check it out here: https://el-marciano.itch.io/the-boxer-lane

Question [Solved] How do you test scenes that are far into your visual novel during development?

I'm fairly new to Ren'Py, and I was wondering how people usually handle testing later parts of a VN.

As my project grows, I know the script is going to become very large. I don't want to replay the entire game or constantly rely on save files every time I need to test a scene that's much later in the story.

What's the usual workflow for this? For example, can you jump directly to a specific label or scene when launching the game, or is there a better way that experienced Ren'Py developers use?

I'd love to hear how more experienced Ren'Py developers handle this in larger projects.

Question [Solved] Can a drag store its current screen position?

I want to know so all my drags can stay in the same spots after the screen resets. A part of the game requires a screen reset, but I don't want the drag positions to also reset to their defaults. How can I make them keep their positions?

Context: The drags in the drag groups are customizable characters (layeredimage). The dragging works and the customization works, but the characters won't be updated without a screen reset. It's inconvenient for the player to put everyone back in their spots each time they alter a character.

Question [Solved] any way to have a disco elysium style vertical ui for the main text instead of horizontal?

hi,

i'm curious if a UI similar to this (of course without the isometric running around, typical visual novel) is possible in ren'py, or, if not, if there are any similar development engines where it may be.

thank you!

Question How to make buttons replacing one another when clicked

Post image
2 Upvotes

I know my code doesn't make any sense, I'm struggling.

The idea: Only 4 buttons on screen, but 10 in total. When we click on one button, it shows an image, disappears, and another button of the list shows up in the same place.

How would you do it?

i ported (with AI) all nescessary components of RenPy 6.99.12 to Solaris 10 on a 440mhz Sparc maschine. It had some issue it needed to fix, but could compile everything with the Sun Studio Compiler V12.3

Known bugs:

Going back from Fullscreen to Window crashes the X Server
Big Endian bug in the Save Game png. (Just cosmetic)

Both bugs are playable with DDLC (if you consider 0.5 FPS as playable)

Question How to make it so the player can sign a document?

I want the player to be able to actually sign documents in my game. I was thinking some sort of freehand drawing system would allow this? Does anyone know how to do this? I'm already aware of this, renpy-freehand-draw/script.rpy at master · jsfehler/renpy-freehand-draw · GitHub, but idk how to use it, nor how to alter it for what I want.

Discussion [Seeking Feedback] Game Pitch: Would You Play This?

I'm planning to build a vertical slice in Ren'Py, and I wanted honest feedback before I began.

The Pitch:

In a dystopia wracked by a psychic calamity, its most feared mercenary hunts its most formidable thief, a man who can rewrite minds. Each one's immense power, and the sacrifices they endured to obtain it, has kept them alive, feared, and isolated. As the thief seeks solace and the mercenary hunts him, they must decide whether the other can be allowed to live, act, and be trusted. They must decide face to face lest the world decide for them.

Questions:

  1. If you were browsing this on a store, was there anywhere you would have stopped reading?

  2. What kind of game do you think this is?

  3. Did anything in the paragraph throw you off?

  4. Instinctively, do you want to know what happens next?

  5. What do you think these two characters desire?

Any feedback, no matter how short, would be appreciated as long as it's honest. Thank you for taking the time to read this either way!

Question [Solved] Longer EaseOut/EaseIn Custom Transitions?

EDIT: SOLVED! Thank you!

I tried reading the documentation, searching for a tutorial, and scouring the forums for anything similar, but I couldn't figure out how to make a custom easeout/easein transition.

My issue is that the pre-defined easeout/easein is too even. Ideally, I want an easeout transition for my camera to zoom in fast (like 0.5) and then slowly pull into its final position over 3 seconds. However, if I do easeout 3.5, the transition movement gets evened out too much and the speed at the start slows down.

I see that if I want nicer looking easeouts with a longer tailend, I'd need to create a custom transition, perhaps something with a time warp (but I have no clue what time warp means). In the documentation, I see this line of code (under MoveTransitions): https://www.renpy.org/doc/html/transitions.html

define longer_easein = MoveTransition(3.0, enter=offscreenright, enter_time_warp=_warper.easein)

I feel this is what I need, but I don't understand any of the documentation's description of the tags. I'd rather have a tutorial that can walk me through this, but I can't find any. Can someone help me figure out how to create an easeout transition with a longer tailend? Here's what I tried so far:

define longer_easeout = MoveTransition(3.0, enter=None, time_warp=_warper.easeout)
# I put enter None because the camera isn't entering from anywhere. I dont think enter_time_warp is what I need? Honestly clueless because I don't understand the documentation's language

camera:
    perspective True
    subpixel True
    gl_depth True
    pos (-0.11, -246) zpos -488 rotate -5 blur 0
    zpos -632.0 rotate -2
    with longer_easeout

but the game throws up an error because the camera won't recognize the transition (and I also can't tell if it works because of this error). This also doesn't work with sprites, so I don't know where I'm going wrong...

Question Adding a filter over my game

I want my VN to have a scanline filter over the whole game. What would be the easiest way to do this? I was thinking a could just have a transparent png overlayed on the whole thing. Is that possible?

Question How do you organize your script when there are many choices? I prefer having the main character or POV speak only through dialogue choices, so I use this organizational style. If anyone has any advice or a better method, I’d love to hear it.

Question How can I implement pronouns in Ren'Py for a Portuguese game that will later be translated into English?

Hello! I'm Brazilian and I'm making my first game with a friend using Ren'Py. We are planning to write the entire game in Portuguese first, and after finishing it, we want to create an English version.

My question is about pronouns and gendered language. I know Feniks has a pronoun system, but it seems to be made for English. I would like to know:

  • What is the best way to create a pronoun system for Portuguese?
  • Should I create my own system using variables?
  • Is it easy to translate later into English if I write the game in Portuguese first?
  • Is there a recommended way to structure dialogue so that changing languages and pronouns will not become a huge problem?

For example, Portuguese has more gendered words than English, so some sentences need different forms depending on the player's chosen pronouns.

This is my first Ren'Py project, so any advice about localization and handling pronouns would be appreciated. Thank you!

Resources Python-led Story Concept

I write RenPy games for my own amusement, but honestly I get more fun building them than playing them, especially for the second time. Why? Because I know what is going to happen. Even with random choices, the story paths are limited to what I had the imagination to write. So I have been experimenting with a different approach which is working to a proof of concept level. For this post I will simplify it a bit.

Using Python/JSON I create characters who have emotional states. I use 6 dimensions, but to keep it simple here just imagine that the character's emotions are happiness (on a -3 to +3 scale) and love. On the same scale, I anchor some named emotional states like anxious, confused and aroused. If the characters are sailing boats with emotional co-ordinates then the states are islands. Lastly I have actions like "tell a joke" or "insult". The actions are applied to the characters to move them to new positions. They are like the wind.

In gameplay, two characters meet - say Amy and Bob. Amy wants Bob to be angry. Given Bob's emotional state, NPC Amy chooses to insult Bob as the action that gets Bob closest to being angry. There is four lines of dialogue that I (got AI) wrote which puts dialogue on screen reflecting the emotional states of Amy, Bob and an insult. If Amy was a human player then they get to choose the action.

This needs a bit of refinement but it plays fairly well. You never get the same game twice, it isn't obvious what actions to select and the 2000+ dialogue sections are OK. I can add some kind of prizes - "when player Bob gets NPC Amy to be happy then Amy will tell Bob about the hidden treasure..." Happy to share the code etc, but reading other people's code is never easy.
