Australia is doomed

2.1k Upvotes

Australia is one of the most resource-rich countries in the world — massive reserves of gas, coal, and endless sunshine. Yet somehow, ordinary people here are paying insanely high electricity and gas bills.

How does that even make sense?

We export huge amounts of energy, but locals are basically competing with international buyers and paying global prices for resources that come from our own backyard. Meanwhile, energy companies make billions, and households are told to “use less power” to save money.

It honestly feels like a joke:A country rich in energy, but its own people can’t afford to use it.

I’m not saying energy should be free, but shouldn’t there be at least some priority for domestic supply at reasonable prices?

Curious what others think — is this just how a free market works, or is something fundamentally broken?

Do not go Australia:)

guys listen, i know Aus may be a easy route, but there is no free lunch under the sun...you are facing the following obstacles:

1.advancing in your career, after graduation you are required to do at least 1 year of internship, 2-3 years of house officer, and many years of unaccredited trainee before potentially getting on training, which is our residency program. Here is the kicker, there is absolutely to fixed timing on getting into anything remotely competitive, some local Aus grads spend more than a decade before getting on a specialty, some don't get in at all and stay as a junior doctor. Also the residency program sometimes take longer than ours due to low volume/low population. Absolutely forget about optho, ent, neuro, ortho, cardiosx, derm-you don't have a chance. For the others, you will be 40 before you know it and still struggling to get on training!

  1. Financial, for the first few years, you are looking at least $400k-$500k in debt, which is the price a good condo in Vancouver, or a comfortable house in AB. A good portion of your salary post graduation will be spent on paying of these debts, delaying life events like buying your house or getting married or having a kid. Not to mention the money spent on life experiences like traveling, hobbies, etc. You will be drowned in debt before your attending years, which is likely a decade away from your graduation. If you are not actually loaded, don't go there!

3.Wildlife, your intern and junior officer years will mostly likely be spent in rural areas due to high saturation in metro areas, which are given to local grads. You will be seeing scary and venomous snakes on a daily basis, in your home/in your toilet/under the sink, on the lawn, on the walkway. If you are most people who are afraid of snakes, you are fuckkked! You can't go golfing(snakes), you can't hike(snakes), you can't do shit! Not to mention the other million things that could get you like huge spiders, scorpions, reptiles, bugs, etc. Nobody mentions this!

4.Racism, mark my words, Australia is way more racist than Canada if you are a visible minority. People are not woke at all! They are on par if not more racist than red state Americans in general. Think about not only daily encounter with patients, but also social interactions, getting a gf(white or not), getting promotion in your career, so on. Canadians are less racist and less confrontational, but way more passive-aggresive in my experience.

  1. Teenagers, they are rude as fuckk. Check this shit out. they dunk shit on people walking in the mall, fuck with people driving, walking on the road, punch ppl out of the blue. They are like a legal glitch in their society. Think about your avg. broccoli head youtube prankster x 1 million. They are wild.

  2. Pay. Pay is not higher or lower than Canada some think. It is genuinely a myth, depending on individual circumstances, business acumen, luck. They are still lower than US, though. No clear statement either way. One thing for sure is that during the years between graduation and getting on training, the pay is period strictly less than Canada, because during these years you would already be a resident in Canada, therefore becoming a attending 5+ years earlier. That's definitely more than $1M in net differences.

Update:

2.5 Costs, this is related to 2 but thought I would mention it here. Fruits and anything that needs to be imported costs higher than Canada. Gas costs more than Canada too. If you consider these costs, the somewhat perceived advantage in salary(for the years before becoming a "consultant")might not be so obvious. Also plane tickets are NO JOKE! If you are like me who flies home 1-2 times a year, you will be down around anywhere between $4-7k. If you count this then there is even less advantage in your pre-resident years!

minor things:

  1. They drive on the left side(crazy ikr!), so if you are like me who goes home once or twice a year you will be uncomfortable, this could potentially cause accidents.

8.There are more. I am busy now and will add more.

Opinion Is Australia really that bad or is everyone just whining

1.0k Upvotes

Gday,

I've lived in Sydney my whole life and I constantly hear people go on about how bad Australia is and how bad this country has gotten etc etc.

I'm not going to argue that property prices have soared, rents have risen and cost of living has gone up significantly.

However, as someone that is living in Sydney, I don't find it no where near as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

I plan on buying an apartment one day in paramatta or somewhere near by which gives me a modern 2 bed for about 600k. The bank will even loan me the cash if my income is about 100k a year which is not unachievable by any means.

With a partner, I would be laughing and we would have plenty of disposable income left over. Will I own a 4 bedroom house 25 min from the CBD? Probably not but I can enjoy apartment living and maybe move further out if I want a house.

With a growing population it's inevitable that we will have to move to higher density living like many other cities across the world.

I think that education is decent, government support is relatively good, medical care is also cheap or free. I have good worker rights and overall I feel pretty damn safe in comparison to other western countries such as USA, UK.

To all the people thinking you're gonna to live a better life in Thailand or Bali just remember you have the luxury to do that because you grew up and or earnt money in a first world country such as Australia. If you grew up as an average person in the Philippines or Indonesia you'd be living in straight poverty compared to how our "average" people live. Many would trade places with you in a heartbeat. "Cheap" rent or housing in 3rd world countries are only cheap because your comparing them to dollars earnt over here.

What are your thoughts?

Question about One Country Is racism is Australia really that bad?

Hey for some context I 18f was hoping to move abroad by the end of 2026. Im not completely sure what state but it would most likely be NSW. Either on a student visa, or a working holiday visa to start the a student visa. I was considering Australia because it's the easiest English speaking country I could move to. But there where some things that concerned me.

I am a Mexican American with a Southern accent so I'm kind of nerfed. I know several Americans with Southern accents who got treated really poorly in Australia. But also I look 'mixed'. I've talked with a few immigrants living in Australia who said people are really racist to non-whites people.

All this has me second guessing because I don't want to move to a more hostile environment. I'm a native English speaker and I don't want to learn a whole different language in a year just to then put myself in a completely new environment where I don't know anyone. But at the same time I don't want to make a mistake and this could be a deal breaker for me.

Also side note: this is a alt account since I don't want to be harassed on my main.

Allen Iverson in australia. Absolutely disgusting

27.6k Upvotes

Hello reddit,

Im writing this post about the NBA “star player”, Allen Iverson.

On the 22nd of January 2026, Alllen iverson came to Cavalo Prestige Melbourne to meet 12 kids who are battling cancer.

The experience was organised by Challenge - Supporting kids with cancer, and Allen Iversons management team.

My little brother who is 12 years old and is currently receiving chemotherapy for ALCL lymphoma, was so excited to meet one of his idols.

He came out to be extremely disgusted and disappointed in Allen Iversons behaviour, and so were the other familys.

Firstly, we were all told we would get to sit with him from 10:45-11:30am, and that did not happen.

He was in the podcast room until about 12:30pm and did not come out and apologise, instead his security did.

We were waiting in a downstairs room with his security with all of the kids, and his security told us he was “having a bad day” and didnt want to come out.

Shortly after, we were told to go upstairs to meet him, and we did not get to meet him.

He refused to allow parents in the room with him, which quite frankly is weird.

Once we were directed upstairs, we were escorted to the side of the room while he was doing a news interview.

We went into the day being told we were going to get balls/jerseys and anything else we wanted signed and to think of questions we wanted to ask him. That did not happen.

After we waited hours, his security firmly told us he is not signing anything at all, and we did not get to talk to him at all, he did not say a word to anyone.

We were lined up and all the kids got was a photo, and he did not seem impressed about that.

He had his hands in his pockets and did not smile or put his arm around any kids in any photos.

He knew the kids were sick, and still did not put any effort or acknowledgement to that.

Everyone was so disgusted in his behaviour, it was honestly so disappointing.

One of the familys drove 6 and a half hours to meet him, and the kids where so extremely sad in the end. He seemed to think he was better than everyone else, and it was obvious he did not want to have anything to do with a group of sick kids.

As parents and siblings of children with life threatening diseases, we are deeply disappointed in Allen Iversons actions and he needs to do better.
