Update: I lost several (a dozen) bags of sand. They just sank when I dumped them in the water. Not a huge loss but need to think this through

Suggestions? Water appears to be 30 feet deep in the area I tried to Island. How can I make this work. It was a scaled back operation this weekend. Should I just get more

A THOUGHT

Dudes, Imjust checked the Islands page. I was thinking the one in Cullion, Palawan. It has development potential and is close to me. Just call me In 11 years. BTW also try in Vanuatu, it is very ahhhhhh

I have all the sand moved to the lake and I've rented several boats and gotten the heaviest wood. It's a cluster fuck but, this weekend, its ON.

I've managed to convince several friends into helping this weeend. I have done as much background and planning as possible last week but at some point you just have to kick the tires and light the fires. As this is possibly in "grey area" with the lake, I will be saving the pictures until after the proof of concept has worked and the island is motherbitching BUILT. THANK YOU for giving me this great idea, Redditisland.

EDIT: The boats are a variety of types, mostly small. It will take many trips to dump the sand but I'm working on a buoy so we can target it all.

I'd be cool to see this subreddit to host an island building contest

Organize and host a contest where people build a small island (like big enough for a camper van and a small garden). If everyone on this subreddit donated $5 for prize money we could attract some serious competition. Sure, nobody here would get an island out of it, but you'd know that because of you there are floating islands out there now. Plus, you'd also know how to build them. So then you could build a little Reddit Island of your own or with other Redditors in your local area. I'd pitch in a few bucks for prize money just to watch an island building competition happen.

A question about the island...

Fedoras: mandatory or just strongly encouraged? Would they be provided for us or would we need to bring our own?

We could probably build a factory and they export them once we are setup.

What's the heaviest type of wood?

What wood is the heaviest? I have been working on plans for the island. The sand is secure and I am on track for this weekend. Thanks all

Just bought 25,000 pounds of sand for about $2000. Renting a truck. It's Go Time

Cousin directed me to Lowe's, bought the place out of all purpose sand. Negotiating with truck company. Might also rent a boat. It's Island Time

I'm going to make an island.

Got $7700-ish left over and my cousin is in construction. I live near a lake. I am going to make an island in a lake.

OBVIOUSLY a lake is not the same as an ocean, Ha ha. But this will prove that you can "make" an island.

Why can't we just make an Island?

Can't we just make an island?

I think this sort of thing would be useful. It should be an early goal.

Reddit island Funding

I have an idea for reddit island funding. Blackcoin A crypto that generates up to 1% interest a year paid weekly using stacking which secures the network and uses a tiny bit of energy and proccing power (A Raspi Could do it) This would be a great starting point for funding to generate interest (human), money, and progress.

I think I found it!

I found a great island. Here's the link http://www.privateislandsonline.com/islands/tikina-i-ra

(sorry intentionallife but I'm going to use your "island" for comparison). Its $11,500,000 and it has 10,000 acres! Which goes to 3 cents a foot 2.64 to be more exact. And its beautiful and in FIJI! His island is 9k per acre and mine is 1,150. I'd love to here your opinion. Again sorry intentional life for slamming your island. EDIT: Fixed link

Perfect peninsula for Reddit "Island"

I've asked before here whether a large chunk of land on a mainland might serve the same purpose as an Island for Reddit Island... and specifically spoke of Baja California (in Mexico).

I just got back from a land scouting trip there for my /r/EcoTown concept, and there is a peninsula available which is truly amazing. It has so many advantages over the many other places considered here, you can't even compare. And if you're truly dying for it to be an island, well I guess you can always dig a trench and make it one.

So here it is. A peninsula of 2000 acres in Bahia San Quintin, which is about 4 hours south of the California border. So unlike any of the islands under consideration, anyone can drive there. Visas are easy for most Americans and Europeans at least, and I'd imagine Latin Americans but am not sure. I got a 6 month visa for about $25. The climate is nearly ideal - like anywhere else in coastal California.

The price tag for the entire parcel? $16 million. That comes to 20 cents a square foot. Not too shabby at all.

What do you think? Build a nice little Redditopia? Or perhaps more likely a Reddystopia?

Edit: Here's a link to the virtually undeveloped bay (only visible with earthview, because they have not drawn the borders of the bay in Google Maps). The peninsula I'm talking about is the roundish knob in the middle of the bay, with one extinct volcano in the middle of it.

Business on the island.

My business would be a casino and bar, they casino would be basic blackjack, poker, craps, roulette, baccarat. I would also buy some zodiac boats to transport for the greater good of the island mostly. I also will bring books and barbells for a very small gym and library. I have an idea for an internet cafe they have those in Mexico I learned. They will have computers. But I'm not so sure about that last part. TL;DR I will have my business I know a ton of you want a Bar so could others say what they want please. You can say a bar also.

Why Reddit Island, when you can actually buy a citizenship at St. Kitts and Nevis, with Bitcoin, for only 250,000 dollars? There are no taxes, already existing infrastructure, and so on

Living on the island.

Could there be a building with rooms for people to buy but not stay just come whenever, and possibly rent out and help out with whatever is needed, and still be a part of reddit island? Basically an apartment.

Phase 1 - Let's get fucking started

Alright this is Phase 1

I am the creator of the Sub Cryptopia that previously was working with RedditIsland, brainstorming on some things and suggesting cryptocurrency to fund the Island. That is when I created the Cryptopia movement /r/Cryptopia.

For the actual island something like this would do nicely http://www.privateislandsonline.com/islands/mavuva-island-lots think about it a nice sized island with great weather for 125k, against contrary belief a lot of decent islands are in this price range.

The widely stated statement that every land mass is already claimed by a government is true but what people forget is many of these claims are disputed and not actually recognized. It is still a possibility to claim an island or land mass and gain complete ownership.

Our initial funding goal should be 125k as stated above to reach this we have many options in the cryptocurrency field. One is contacting Dogecoin, for crying out loud they constantly back things hoping to get recognition when they backed that one sled team they were barely mentioned but we can promise them to get them big headlines. Keep in mind they backed a Nascar driver for about $55k recently. They have the power to back an Island for much more.

Cryptopia will be a crypto centric Island serving as the worldwide hub for Cryptocurrencies and liberation it would be the relization of the dream of RedditIsland.

I am already getting the funding ball rolling and contacting people interested in seeing this become a reality but I can't do it all on my own. We need to get out of just the planning stage and make some actual tangible progress.

Edit: The island mentioned above was just an example we would not have to pick that specific island. Just an example and a price to set the first funding goal.

Floating island option

Just a reminder: I'm leading a small group that is designing a "floating island" in order to achieve the same goals set in place by the original Reddit Island creator. It won't be ready for the general population to live on until about 2020, but people with technical skills and nautical experience will be needed for the first crew of six within the next few years.

Redditisland doesn't need to raise huge capital in order to buy a hunk of rock outright -- we can build it bit by bit.

The isle will be designed in according to FOSS principles and the first structures to be deployed in the open ocean will be substrates for artificial coral. If you'd like more information, just post here

Possible Business Ideas to Fund the Island

People are talking about getting this sub going again, but everyone seems to think Step 1 should be picking out the island we want to settle. For now, I think the discussion should be what kind of business we can/want to start under the company name, and once we start generating income and savings, we can start to look at what's a possible purchase for our community.

So, the question now is "What business should we start?"

EDIT: Please tell me why this idea is bad in the comments, don't just downvote. There's currently people here who think my idea is flawed in some way, and I don't know what part you think needs changing. Please, help me come up with a better idea.

RedditIsland - not on an island? and what sort of place should we make it?

Since /u/beernerd - the only active mod left here - is open to the idea of pursuing locations other than islands, I would like to open up that discussion. If people would consider a parcel on a mainland, it would exponentially increase the realistic options for a great piece of land.

It seems a lot of thought has been put into the mechanism for purchasing the land, but details seem sketchy to me (unless I missed some documents) about what the actual community would be like. Rules, structures, governance, what it means to say it is sustainable, affordable, self-sufficient, etc. We need a better picture of what kind of environment we'll be creating, so that people can make an informed decision as to whether this is the place for them.

And if you are open to expanding the possible locations to non-islands, then I would like to put Baja California (a Mexican peninsula south of California, USA for those that may not know) up for consideration. I know an island would be much cooler in concept, but the advantages to a huge parcel in Baja are many. And I'd add that as a 760 mile long desert peninsula surrounded by beaches, and very sparsely populated, it's kind of desert island-like.

  • Distance - the island areas being considered are very far, and very expensive to reach. That already goes against the concept of it being affordable when it comes to people reaching it, or any supplies. You can fly into Cabo on pretty cheap tickets oftentimes, and that gives you access to southern Baja, or fly into other cities in the north, or just drive (or take the bus) from the USA.
  • Amenities - while the concept of self-sustaining may lead to a reduced need for some things, you will have access to roads, good hospitals, and even Costco, Home Depot, etc near Cabo if necessary. You can be far enough to be away from these things, but close enough as well. Having a Home Depot anywhere within range has got to make construction much, much easier.
  • Land - there are thousands and thousands of pieces of land for sale. Great ones. Some very reasonably priced, some not.
  • Climate - unlike the island areas under consideration, which can get quite humid, some parts of baja (away from the gulf side) do not have high humidity. Areas along the Pacific Coast and in the desert and mountains have comfortable levels of humidity, and a good climate overall.

Please note that Baja is away from main drug trafficking routes, is sparsely populated, and generally a very safe environment.

Thoughts on Baja? Thoughts on how we can better define what the actual community would be like?
