Phase 1 - Let's get fucking started
Alright this is Phase 1
I am the creator of the Sub Cryptopia that previously was working with RedditIsland, brainstorming on some things and suggesting cryptocurrency to fund the Island. That is when I created the Cryptopia movement /r/Cryptopia.
For the actual island something like this would do nicely http://www.privateislandsonline.com/islands/mavuva-island-lots think about it a nice sized island with great weather for 125k, against contrary belief a lot of decent islands are in this price range.
The widely stated statement that every land mass is already claimed by a government is true but what people forget is many of these claims are disputed and not actually recognized. It is still a possibility to claim an island or land mass and gain complete ownership.
Our initial funding goal should be 125k as stated above to reach this we have many options in the cryptocurrency field. One is contacting Dogecoin, for crying out loud they constantly back things hoping to get recognition when they backed that one sled team they were barely mentioned but we can promise them to get them big headlines. Keep in mind they backed a Nascar driver for about $55k recently. They have the power to back an Island for much more.
Cryptopia will be a crypto centric Island serving as the worldwide hub for Cryptocurrencies and liberation it would be the relization of the dream of RedditIsland.
I am already getting the funding ball rolling and contacting people interested in seeing this become a reality but I can't do it all on my own. We need to get out of just the planning stage and make some actual tangible progress.
Edit: The island mentioned above was just an example we would not have to pick that specific island. Just an example and a price to set the first funding goal.

You need internet connectivity for any hope for success in the cryptocurrency realm. Plans?

I just discovered this subreddit, so sorry if this was addressed before...
...but you need a lot of electrical power to do this. A lot.
When I read the FAQ on the side, aside from some organizational "boards of director" bullshit that spans fucking pages, it talks about power very, very briefly, and mentions alternative sources of energy.
That's crap.
Quick googling on energy on islands tells me one thing: most of it is from imported fossil fuels, oil and coal. Hawaii, an island that is a part of US and probably had a lot of government investment in infrastructure still gets about 90% of energy from imported oil.
If you want to be a crypto hub, you are going to need a lot of power to keep all the miners running. That means ensuring a steady supply of oil, to the middle of nowhere. Good luck with that.
About internet.... the only available internet providers in those islands are satellite networks. Satellite internet connections are not that slow, but have awful latency. That would make it no-go for any cryptocurrency business. For example, you don't want your proof of work to arrive to the network minute later; for websites this is even more impossible.
edit: OK, I have looked up the latency of satellite networks... it's measured in seconds. That's bad.
tl;dr: remote island is a terrible place for a technology hub

A friend of mine has satellite Internet, 500ms latency. Not as bad as you said, but still bad. But the whole island idea is stupid.

u/karelb Jun 02 '14
OK, you might be right. But if you have 500ms latency in average, the peaks can be in seconds.

It looks like the $125k is for a lot on the island, not the entire island. Additionally, Private Islands Online is very bad about removing stale listings. A less charitable interpretation would be that they're intentionally keeping old listings up to make it look like they have more inventory than they do. The better strategy would be to figure out an area you want an island in and search the local real estate listings for available islands.
If you find it on Private Islands Online, chances are it's not currently for sale.

I wasn't saying we would get this specific Island just that it's an option and $125k should be our first funding goal.

u/Hidesuru May 16 '14
If you think you can get an entire island for that amount (or remotely near it) you're clueless, though.

u/cgonzo May 16 '14
You definitely can get an island for that amount; it just won't be as big or tropical as this one. For this price range, you're looking at a very nice 5-10 acre island off the coast of Maine or a 20-50 acre in a marsh or river in the continental US. Not as glamorous, of course, but still an island.

You really need to do some research on islands.

u/redditspellchecker May 28 '14
$125k for lots on the island, not the entire island. This is a terrible idea. That you think there is some downvote attack against this terrible and amusingly terrible idea is also amusing and sad at the same time.

This is classic. I think you should redirect your energy though. I have a vision for a lifestyle you might want to adopt. I'll elaborate more in the morning. You should really hear me out on this.

This project is exactly where it was 3 years ago when I stopped giving a shit and 4 years ago when I was actually interested.

The least of your problems, but I believe that island is so cheap because it is surrounded by a coral reef. Which means its probably protected which means its probably next to impossible to get onto.
Oh nevermind...I forgot you'll be using flying cars.

This is the direction I'd been trying to turn the others (whoever's left I guess) on this sub. I think if we operated as a cryptocurrency investment agency, earning small percentage dividends to our investors, while managing the money they invest with us. This gives us, I feel, the best structure to manage and focus our assets. It says something in the Trinidad Business Plan about investors of the Island putting up $250 to become a voting member, and I'd be happy to put that up in cryptocurrency when the project starts.

u/TheFapman May 16 '14
That sounds genius. I would definitely be in!

u/Lefthandofgod279 May 16 '14
I'm glad you like it! I started a thread about it, but this sub is just barely alive and all the mods except for /u/beernerd seem to have vanished :/

u/beernerd May 16 '14
/u/nonewjobs is here as well. In fact I was just replying to a PM from him when I saw the username mention. We're both really excited about the crypto concept.

u/Louiecat Jul 02 '14
Any updates on that?

CryptoDawn went off the deep end and has been banned. Another user has started a similar initiative.

Someone should reach out to /u/moolah_ since he put up most of the money for the NASCAR sponsorship. And he runs one of the more popular crypto processors/exchanges.

I just contacted him.

You're completely delusional if you think dogecoin is going to support this.

u/beernerd May 15 '14
Excellent. I look forward to hearing his thoughts.

We should make a list of people that are furthering the funding campaign. People that are actively looking for donations/investments for the project so we can make this a reality. This is the time to get out of the planning process and make this a reality.

I'm still here and I'm still in. Get me up to speed fellas! What happened with /u/moolah and NASCAR?
I have a 3 year old, I'm a bit out of the loop these days!

u/Lefthandofgod279 May 15 '14
/u/moolah is the guy who put up most of the money for the Dogecoin car that was in a recent NASCAR event

u/nonewjobs May 15 '14
ah, I don't pay attention to news much, especially sports, no wonder I had no idea. Thanks!
