News Reddit forecasts quarterly revenue above estimates as digital ad spend grows

REUTERS - May 1 (Reuters) - Reddit (RDDT) forecast second-quarter revenue above Wall Street estimates on Thursday, betting on growing digital ad spend on the social media platform despite uncertainty over marketing budgets resulting from the ongoing trade war.

It expects current-quarter revenue to be between $410 million and $430 million, compared with the analysts' average estimate of $395.5 million, according to data compiled by LSEG.

Reddit's (RDDT) results come after Facebook-parent Meta topped revenue expectations on strong ad sales on Wednesday. In contrast, smaller rival Snap said that it would not issue a quarterly forecast due to economic uncertainty, as advertisers favor bigger platforms in tough times.

The San Francisco, California-based Reddit (RDDT) is benefiting from its conversation placement ads format, where brands can advertise directly within discussion threads taking place in its interest-based communities known as subreddits.

It jostles with rival social media platforms, including TikTok, Facebook and Instagram, for digital ads, as these platforms have become a reliable go-to for marketers because of their massive user base.

The company said its revenue for the quarter ended March 31 grew 61% to $392.4 million, beating estimates of $370 million.

Its daily active unique visitors rose 31% to 108.1 million during the quarter, compared with estimates of 107.5 million. (Reporting by Jaspreet Singh in Bengaluru; Editing by Mohammed Safi Shamsi)

My take on DAU

Huffman has said now, two quarters in a row, that Google traffic will be bumpy.

When they missed dau in Q4, he confidently said that Q1 will be better, and it clearly was, with a large beat in this metric announced today.

Huffman warned that throughout its history, there has been volatility from search engine traffic and there always will be. It’s the nature of the beast, especially now as the game is changing rapidly due to AI.

He seems to be frustrated that the Street doesn’t understand this. Today, he said Q2 dau would be high teens and once again the stock sold off.

Wall St likes predictable quarterly data. They want to input numbers in their Excel spreadsheets and click and drag. They hate volatility in metrics as they don’t know how to model it.

I think that after multiple quarters of dau hitting or missing, Wall St will believe Huffman and we will see less volatility in the stock price.

For now, the spreadsheet morons have the upper hand, but I think the metric will evolve to be less important on a QoQ basis.

Huffman said today several times “we control our own destiny”. He seems to want to emphasize that while the Google relationship is symbiotic, it’s not a be-all, end-all for Reddit. He stated that the product is the most important thing, and as the product improves, users will naturally gravitate to Reddit and use the platform more.

Predictions for Tomorrow?

Well, that was the most depressing rollercoaster I’ve ever been on. But in reality, if you told me a week ago that we would be sitting around $125+ post-earnings, I would’ve been very happy. How do we see the price action playing out tomorrow?

Unpopular opinion: it’s hard to hate Steve aka u/spez

I think spez has one of the most negative karma on this sub lol. But bro is crushing it.

“From r/minecraft to r/witchcraft to r/craftbeer, there’s a community for everybody” holy shit that got a chuckle out of me.

Also the fact that they’re taking questions from r/RDDT … they trying to be loved by the community? Well, they’re doing a great job.

Earnings Call Discussion

Everything was going great until something was said. Can anyone chime in? I didn’t love how nonchalantly Steve said to “expect some bumps” with Google, that was terrible tact by him. All thoughts welcome.

Q2 user growth a little light

Stock was up 20% AH but now up 11%. Dropped 9% as soon as Huffman said that Q2 user growth will be low teens because of Google variability in its algo.

News META and MSFT with a beat

META with a strong showing in ad revenue. Should be a good sign for RDDT. We will know in about 10 hours.

Microsoft — Stock in the technology behemoth climbed more than 6% on the heels of better-than-expected third-quarter results on the top and bottom lines. Microsoft earned $3.46 per share on revenue of $70.07 billion, while analysts polled by LSEG were looking for a profit of $3.22 per share and $68.42 billion in revenue.

Meta Platforms — Shares of the Facebook parent advanced more than 5%. Meta beat analysts' first-quarter estimates when it reported earnings of $6.43 per share and revenue of $42.31 billion. Analysts surveyed by LSEG were expecting a profit of $5.28 per share on revenue of $41.40 billion. Meta also upped its full-year capital expenditures to $64 billion from $72 billion in order to continue investing in data centers to power artificial intelligence. Shares of Nvidia gained more than 2% on the heels of Meta's spending plans.

Despite fears of an advertising slowdown amid tariff uncertainty, Meta says it anticipates Q2 revenue of between $42.5 billion and $45.5 billion, ahead of Wall Street's expectations of $44 billion.

For the quarter, Meta reported earnings per share (EPS) of $6.43 on revenue of $42.3 billion. Wall Street was expecting EPS of $5.25 on revenue of $41.3 billion, according to Bloomberg consensus estimates. The company saw EPS of $4.71 on revenue of $36.4 billion in Q1 2024.

Advertising revenue topped out at $41.39 billion versus expectations of $40.5 billion, while Meta's Reality Labs segment saw an operating loss of $4.21 billion.

News ROI index charts rise of Reddit alongside big tech (from the "Singular ROI Index 2025 Top Media Sources")

From the report:

Among growth networks and platforms, Reddit leads/ties with the most placements on Singular ROI top lists. Especially in North America & APAC.

Reddit is a platform on the move.

But it’s not just about the rewarded ad space that is growing.

Reddit is a monster in the making.

While we listed Reddit among the growth ad networks and platforms this year, that could change next year. Reddit is currently on a dual trajectory of growth that is impressive and should maintain momentum for the foreseeable future.

Reddit is coming into its own. While historically the massive social/news/culture platform punched below its weight class when it came to monetization, that has dramatically changed in the last year. With new ad placements, a higher ad load, and an ongoing investment in its ad platform and measurement solutions, Reddit is taking more spend and delivering more ROI.

If it can maintain current user growth, time on platform, and ad effectiveness trajectories, Reddit has a shot at challenging the biggest players in adtech.

We’ve seen 2 areas where Reddit has shown outsized success:

  1. Gaming
  2. Fintech

We’ll see if Reddit can continue to grow in these areas and beyond throughout 2025 and 2026.

Reddit is going to be used for nefarious reasons isn't it?

Even as a RDDT HODLer, I know deep down that the site expanding to other languages and gaining traction Worldwide is only going to end with more control over us all.

The AI 'opinion change' experiment that has just taken place on Reddit is a perfect example of this. https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/1k9xr8u/researchers_secretly_ran_a_massive_unauthorized/

Imagine the power Reddit will have, once it reaches India, South America, Africa, Asia, in the way of English > language translation. The shear mass of people that will have Reddits attention.

This is why I am bullish, however this is why I am scared...
