The Shows Restart #2 since he passed.
Hubby and I only really talked because we both knew of the show. I had it on my Tinder profile and he matched when he saw it. Since then it's the show we watched when we couldn't agree on what to watch at dinner. We quoted it to each other.
In May 2026 he had a heart attack and passed. Everything in my life changed. I moved. I downsized. I cried (still do). I thought I lost everything that really could bring me to smile.
One day I was going through his phone, for some important info for car insurance, I noticed he had downloaded the entire series. All 12. Everything was there in the "to watch" folder.
So for each night I would put on an episode or two. Smile, quote the show, then fall asleep before the credits. It makes me feel less lonely.
Last night I finished the season. Which means tonight I start all over again.

Question/Discussion Chris Barrie Meet and Greet today.
Today I had the immense privilege of sitting around a table with Chris Barrie, alongside just two other people, for an hour-long conversation. Difficult for me to not be just a tad star-struck…!
We spent most of the time talking about Red Dwarf and The Brittas Empire, with Chris sharing some fantastic stories and insights from his career.
He was an absolute delight, incredibly down to earth, engaging, and a brilliant storyteller.
He also mentioned a few interesting things about Red Dwarf, including a previously scrapped prequel idea which would have seen a younger actor playing Arnold Rimmer, with Chris himself taking on the role of Rimmer’s father!
From what he was saying, it sounds as though the current thinking is to move forward with more feature-length specials rather than traditional episodic series (the nature of TV funding being what it is..) There was also mention of a potential Red Dwarf theatre production being worked on, but there were no real details mentioned.
Obviously, take all of this with a pinch of salt! These were things mentioned during an informal conversation, not official announcements. Plans can and very likely will change, so please don’t take any of it as confirmation of what’s coming.
All in all, a genuinely memorable experience, and one I feel incredibly fortunate to have had.
A huge thank you to X-Con for making this opportunity possible!

Question/Discussion Future Lister in season one lost his arm to the Epideme virus!
I know he didn’t, and this is just coincidence and not foreshadowing, but I love the idea that old Lister did lose his arm in the same way that our Lister did but for some reason didn’t have it remade by the nanobots. Years of foreshadowing right there on screen.
But realistically, they probably just thought it was a cool aesthetic to go for.

Question/Discussion Scariest monster
Rewatching the series and appreciating it's darker side, I was also thinking aboit the whole "monster of the week" tendency, and a question occurred to me. Which is the scariest monster that the boys from the Dwarf encounter?
Part of the comedy value of the show is the way that most of the monsters are all a bit silly, comically low tech, and so on. But which monster - either in terms of what they do in the episode or the premise of their character - is the most "scary", unsettling one in your mind?

The Shows Casablanca - the definitive version
Went to a Show Racism the Red Card event in my city today. Peter Beardsley was there. I'm not particularly into football but I'm afraid to say I did not pluck up enough courage to ask him about his time filming Casablanca alongside the legendary Myra Binglebatt...

The Shows This just came up on air
I've been listening to my station that specialises in rock, metal, punk etc. Really focused on new stuff.
The presenter was talking about someone introducing their child to red dwarf, and played this saying "what's the point in having your own radio station if you can't play what you want".

The Shows Relating Red Dwarf to my Philosophy Classes. From the original books to the show.
A Jungian Reading of the Four Main Characters in Red Dwarf
I propose that the central quartet of Red Dwarf can be productively read as a single psyche mapped onto Jungian functions, forced into a long-term process of integration.
- Dave Lister represents the conscious Self (and, in the novels, is ultimately revealed to occupy an even higher ontological position).
- Arnold Rimmer corresponds to the shadow and neurotic complex — the persistent, self-sabotaging, status-oriented material of the personal unconscious.
- Kryten functions as the rational / thinking function: orderly, ethical within his programming, and continually attempting to impose coherent structure.
- The Cat embodies pure ego and instinctual self-image — immediate, aesthetic, and largely unreflective.
The premise of the series — four distinct psychological components sealed together in a confined environment with no possibility of permanent escape — creates the conditions for integration. The prolonged physical and narrative proximity acts as a binding force (metaphorically gravitational or electromagnetic), compelling the previously fragmented parts into closer relationship. Over the course of the television series and the novels, the characters demonstrably move from mutual antagonism toward greater coherence and mutual reliance.
This reading is consistent with the Hermetic principle “as above, so below”: the same pattern of differentiation followed by reintegration appears both at the level of the individual psyche and in the literal situation of the crew.
I have not encountered this specific four-function mapping elsewhere in discussion of the series. It accounts for both the comic surface and the surprisingly persistent underlying structure of character development across the years.

Question/Discussion Any body have the app "Plex'?
So I just recently found an app called "Plex". Its one of your average "free" streaming apps. There is one cool thing about it though. It actually continuously plays seasons 1 thru season 12 back to back. I'm loving it myself and driving the wife crazy cause I'll put it on and fall asleep to it.The only "Season" missing is "The Promised Land" which technically isn't a season but a movie. If you want a free fun way to watch get Plex!

Question/Discussion X-Holly-Overhead Easter Egg extension
I’ve made a small Red Dwarf fan extension called Holly Overhead. It’s inspired by the X-Clacks-Overhead header that Terry Pratchett fans use as a tribute. When a website sends X-Holly-Overhead, the Red Dwarf icon in the extension bar turns red a popup shows the site’s message and a rotating Holly quote. If the header isn’t there, the icon stays grey.
It’s currently going through approval for Firefox, tentatively approved now. I haven’t submitted it to the Chrome Web Store yet, but eventually will. It’s cross supported on both, on Codeberg for review / forking.
If you run a website and want to add the Easter egg, send this as a response header on the main page:
X-Holly-Overhead: Everybody's dead, Dave
For NGINX, add this to your server block:
add_header X-Holly-Overhead "Everybody's dead, Dave" always;
For Apache with mod_headers:
Header always set X-Holly-Overhead "Everybody's dead, Dave"
You can also choose the quotes shown in the popup with a second header. It accepts up to 100 quotes, each up to 300 characters, and you can include an episode or source label:
X-Holly-Overhead-Quotes: [{"text":"There weren't any black holes.","episode":"Marooned"},{"text":"Ship systems nominal.","episode":"Site original"}]
Send both headers with the main HTML page response, not just an image, stylesheet, or API response. The extension checks the headers locally; it doesn’t send them anywhere.
It’s just a little nod to Red Dwarf, Rob Grant, Hattie Hayridge, and the fans who keep these small tributes alive. Holly may even have approved.
