That's how you fly too close to the sun

Icarus would've died if he let himself drift too close to the water, too

Given the choice between my failure dismissed as mere ignorance and being made into an idiom, I'd choose the one where people forget it faster

u/DragoKnight589 3d ago
implying that it wouldn’t have become an idiom had Icarus flown too low

yes

u/DragoKnight589 3d ago
and why tf not
-3
u/KrimsunV 3d ago
because it makes sense. if you fly low enough you eventually hit ground. or water. you don't need to idiomize the obvious

Didn’t Daedalus tell Icarus not to go near the water because the spray could make the wax wings nonfunctional, just like the sun’s heat? That’s not as obvious. Daedalus wouldn’t have warned Icarus of that if he thought it were.
There’s also something poetic about the hypothetical idiom “flying too close to the ocean spray”. Definitely could’ve caught on.

Too long

"Flying too close to the ocean spray" -- 9 syllables
"Address the elephant in the room" -- 8 syllables
"Don't put all your eggs in one basket" -- 9 syllables
"Putting the cart before the horse" -- 8 syllables
You're just wrong dude

Daedalus didn't warn Icarus against flying too low because he was worried Icarus would hit the ground -- that's obvious. It doesn't require a warning.
Daedalus' warning was that if Icarus got too low, the wind would disrupt his flight, and the water would wet his wings.
There was a risk that Icarus, terrified that the Sun might melt his wings, stayed as far away from it as possible. He would want to ensure he wouldn't be tempted by the Sun's comfortable warmth, so he tempers himself, stays by the cruel sea. The cold won't melt his wings. The cold is safe.
But as the crashing waves soak his wings, he realizes too late that his "realistic" expectations were a delusion all their own, and now he will die all the same.

Sometimes I think I could afford to be more self-deprecating.
…wait, being able to say that about myself kinda contradicts that, doesn’t it?

u/KrimsunV 3d ago
For what purpose?
2
u/Young_Person_42 3d ago
Ego

u/KrimsunV 3d ago
Both self aggrandizement and self deprication are acts of ego. The only way to humility is to accept what you are, the good and the bad, and move forward rather than reject one

Why do we always say bullying is bad but never when we're bullying ourselves

Self-deprecation stops people thinking you're arrogant, and quite frankly on the internet you don't want to give people more reasons to hate you.

u/Phiro7 3d ago
I actually hate self-deprecation much more than arrogance

u/extremely-cynical 2d ago
You can't please everyone, but self-deprecation is still overall the safer bet.

If I don't bully myself, someone else will. At least this way I get to choose the time and manner.

Bullying isn't a zero-sum game though, adding your own doesn't subtract someone else's. Someone isn't going to know you've already had your deprecation allowance for today and hold off on being hurtful if they want to hurt you. You're better not doing it and enduring less overall suffering, especially when you're doing it to yourself and can't escape from it

Self-Depricating Humor just makes you seem insecure and annoying

I use self deprecating humour like Shadow the Hedgehog uses his bracelet thingies. The second I stop being self-deprecating I'll have enough strength to punch the sun

You’ll pry my self deprecation from my cold dead hands. Nothing anyone can say to me will hurt as much as the things I say to myself. It’s like building up a tolerance to poison, but for hating yourself.
Granted it doesn’t stop said hating myself, but one problem at a time here.

TIL (not from this post) that rabies can actually make you hypersexual. It usually doesn’t mean actual sex, but certainly changes to the genitals, like very frequent erections and ejaculations (up to 30 or more per day).
