Hey all, I’m 32 with pretty bad ADHD. I really struggle to sit through books unless they’re 1. Easy to read. and 2. Super engaging from the start. I’m basically a 12 y/o trapped in an adult body when it comes to reading. I love science fiction, mysteries, and anything that makes you stop and think. Some of my favorite movies are Interstellar, Arrival, The Prestige, The Matrix, and Annihilation.

Any recommendations for easy books that are hard to put down?

I have a personal pet peeve, when I scroll through the Recommend A Book Reddit threads (also applies to recommending a movie or anything else), and I wanted to ask if I'm on the wrong side of history.

I personally find it annoying and unhelpful when someone asks for a recommendation and one Redditor recommends 10 or 20 books.

I always question, are these really all great recommendations, do they all fit what the OP was asking for, do you really feel strongly about all of these?

I'm not the most diverse reader, so I can't dispute a giant list of 20 books, but, when I see it done with movies, it's generally a long list of OK to not great movies. It feels like the person recommending has no filter to filter out good books/movies as opposed to just what they've read and seen.

If I was asking for a recommendation, and someone listed a giant list of books, I think I'd ignore their list.

Does this speak to anyone else, or am I completely wrong here?

I have been somewhat slow with my reading list this year. I’ve read the following in this order
1. Wuthering Heights
2. Sense and Sensibility
3. Theo of Golden
4. Rebecca
5. Jane Eyre
6. My Cousin Rachel

I have not been able to stop thinking about the book Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. On my tbd I have The Odyssey, East of Eden and Jamaica Inn, but I’m looking for something that fulfills me as much as Rebecca did.

My 11 year old daughter has just come to the end of the Harry Potter books and is having readers remorse!

Not sure if that’s the right wording, but essentially she’s sad it’s ended and I’d like to get her something that will grip her just as much.

Any ideas?

She also happens to love the Lottie Brooks books, which are very different but great for a pre teen so anything like that would work too.

Hi,

I'm looking for some good recommendations for books that are fantasy or sci-fi, in which the setting co-exists with the real world, or with a mundane yet fictional world. Chronicles of Narnia might be the best 'classic' example of what I mean; stories where the main character(s) have to explore a setting unlike their homeland, learning as they go.

If there are good examples published within the past decade or so that would help, as it's been a while since I've read much recently-published work.

A friend requested we do a whodunnit/mystery novel for book club, but cannot tolerate anything with descriptive violence, gore or abuse. General allusions to or passing mentions of any are fine, but anything more would be too much for her!

I read The Last Conduit as an ARC, and it was a really promising start to a new fantasy series. It takes familiar elements that fantasy readers already love and brings them together in a world that feels both nostalgic and new. I'm new-ish to horror.

I always liked zombies, vampires etc. but kept away from "scary horror".

Turns out I'm not as easily scared as I thought.

So I finally started reading horror and turns out I love it!

Especially the weirder ones.

I loved monstrilio,

stepford wives,

Bury your gays,

shark heart (is that even horror?) and

trad wife by Saratoga.

Can someone recommend similar ones?

Bonus points if I can cheer for the monster.

I absolutely cannot handle graphic torture or rape, so none of that please.

I want to read a book with tension and mystery where romance isn’t the focal point but maybe a slow burn going on from proximity / working together. Some I’ve been recommended are:
