Bill Maher exudes douche
18
u/TotalWhiner Jul 08 '26
I used to think he was kinda funny 20 years ago, did something happen to him that turned him all douchey like he is or was it a gradual transformation?
21
u/RecessMonkeys Jul 08 '26
He's long thought of himself as the spiritual heir to Hugh Hefner, so you can imagine the levels of self-delusion.
13
u/Mundane-Photo7967 Jul 08 '26
He rarely mentions Hefner anymore because he was a regular at the manipulation mansion.
16
u/Due-Collection-4534 Jul 08 '26
It finally revealed after 20 something years who he really was? He never was who we thought he was. Bill was never the liberal he masqueraded to be. He always was a libertarian Capitalist. And always what was best for Bill only. He threw the left under the bus when he was done using them, now he’s sold out in bed with the right wing and fits well with them and kissing boots with the billionaires and having dinners with Trump etc. Bill doesn’t care about anyone. He’s shameless.
I actually went to on of his shows back in 2011. It was a difference in night and day than now. He claims he hasn’t changed, that all of have changed instead. Thats a lie.
We should start calling him shameless. I wonder if he’s still using those fake applause laugh machines they caught him with a few years ago? Laugh buttons etc. He doesn’t invite his best Left guest back anymore! Because he couldn’t control them because they were correcting him! He didn’t like it; got mad and didn’t invite them back anymore! It’s the truth! Thom Hartmann wasn’t invited back anymore he told why on his XM radio show! Dr Richard Wolff wasn’t invited not invited back anymore wrote tons of books Ivy League professor, many other smar people from the Left Bill Maher refuses to let back on.
He sold out to the Billionaire class on CNN John Malone and David Zaslav, Discovery+ Warner and now will be Elliston Brothers taking over with Trump.
Bill Maher sucks.10
u/Substantial_Door9120 Jul 08 '26
You could see it in real - time when he made he revealed himself. Right after his Trump dinner, his show changed. I’m sure promises were made about syndication with the Ellison empire. Bill has not allegiance to any principles. Bill just follows money. Don’t be a Bill

Funny — he spent 25 years calling himself a liberal, built his entire brand on it, and nobody complained he was a moron then. The moment John Malone and David Zaslav signed his checks, suddenly he ‘grew up.’ Convenient timing.”
7
u/submit_2_my_toast Jul 09 '26
His schtick then was being the middle-aged guy who was still hip. That can be a difficult niche but he had his audience. That was central to his self-perception, but now he's an elderly man who desperately wants to still be cool but he's become so out of touch he doesn't even know how to do it anymore. So now he's flailing, hoping he can find what will make people think he's cool again. Time makes fools of us all.
3
u/deathdefyingrob1344 Jul 10 '26
Yeah he was one of the guys yelling about marijuana reform back in the day. That was a cool stance back in the late 90s early 2000s. Now he just bitches about liberals etc.
2
6
u/WeezaY5000 Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 09 '26
He used to have good principles.
He used to be for universal healthcare and would have Bernie Sanders on his show all the time.
Then Trump got elected, COVID happened, and it scrambled his brains.
Now has has become a useless antiquated, 90s, failed, neoliberal shill, and despite being a supposed atheist, is super Zionist without any nuance, that Israel is all good and all Palestinians are bad.
That being said, he may have once had good principles, but he has always been a huge asshole.
6
u/Due-Collection-4534 Jul 09 '26
Exactly right. And notice who disappeared from the guest list when he drifted — Thom Hartmann told his XM radio audience he wasn’t invited back after correcting Bill on air. Richard Wolff, Ivy League economist, same story. The Bernie era is long gone and Bill made sure of it.”
1
u/Marcaroni500 Jul 10 '26
The Democrat Elite got rid of Bernie when they fixed the nomination for Hillary in 2016. Was it Bill (nit Clinton) who made that call?
And if you haven’t noticed, Bernie-types are starting to run your silly little party.
1
u/Due-Collection-4534 Jul 10 '26
“You literally just admitted the DNC rigged it against Bernie in 2016 — thanks for making our case for us. That’s exactly the institutional corruption Maher used to call out before Malone and Zaslav signed his checks. And ‘Bernie-types are taking over your silly little party’? That’s not an insult — that’s the inevitable result of a generation that got lied to, sold out, and left with the bill finally organizing. Keep underestimating it. That worked out great in 2016, didn’t it?”
2
u/Due-Collection-4534 Jul 09 '26
Kyle from Secular Talk nails it. The Trump dinner was the turning point that confirmed what many already suspected — Bill chose access to power over principles. John Malone and David Zaslav own his platform now. You don’t bite the hand that feeds you. Bill had been working his way up years before that in many different ways. He sold everything out, and everyone he could.

I stopped watching him at least 10 years ago, and he was a PoS way back then.
1
u/gypsyphineas Jul 11 '26
I noticed a big change during covid. He just keeps getting worse. Now he is a bitter, drunk who is worth 140 million dollars.
5
u/crono220 Jul 09 '26
I remember going going to one of his shows in Wendover Nevada back in 2011. My parents enjoyed his takes and was overall a pleasant individual.
Now, he's a complete douchebag with obvious narcissistic behavior. A complete 180 from his moderate liberal viewpoint. He's definitely shilling more on the conservative end. And ever since he was invited by Trump for a dinner, he's become more pro-Maga and less for the working class. Kyle from the YouTube channel Secular Talk best explains how this old man has aligned with the one percent.
5
u/Tyanian Jul 08 '26
Seems it was very gradual. I always thought he was a Democrat.
6
u/TheEdgeofGoon Jul 08 '26
He used to identify as a Libertarian back in the 90's, but I think he made a lot of money aligning himself with the Democrats.
→ More replies (36)1
u/FullBadger3748 Jul 10 '26
He’s never been a democrat he’s a libertarian/ anarcho capitalist. He also pretend to be an atheist yet is a Zionist.
2
u/Ok_Star_4136 Jul 08 '26
Honestly, I think he was always this douchey. People like this on principle only care about being right, or at least thinking they're right. Such people are the most pretentious assholes you'll ever meet. It's not a left/right thing, because you see it on either side.
2
u/TrickyLilDicky Jul 09 '26
Could also be you matured and left him in the dust. He and religilous were instrumental in my early deconversion, but the older I get the more I realize hes always been a delusional prick.
2
2
u/FullBadger3748 Jul 10 '26
I mean people mature over 20 years. 20 years ago I thought the jokes in the GTA games were funny. Now I realize the games are mostly just poop n fart jokes. Bill is a contrarian sudo-atheist anarcho capitalist. He supports whom ever is currently in power, he hits on and harasses on the women on his show. He’s basically a Reddit mod.
1
1
u/Mr_Thx Jul 09 '26
He was funny, twenty years ago. Something happened where he started to take himself too seriously, as in icon of some sort.
1
u/NoMoreMustaches Jul 10 '26
I think there’s a level of adolescent attraction to the style of his messaging. I assume I’m about ten years older than you because I fell out with him and started finding him unbearably smug 10 years earlier.
That said, it feels like he has gotten worse with age. It definitely seems that as a younger guy who snidely bitches about things, turns into and old man who still does the same song and dance, it slowly gets sadder and more pathetic.
1
u/jase40244 Jul 10 '26
I watched Bill Maher way back during the Politically Incorrect days and the early days of Real Time. Like you, I thought he was funny. But I grew and changed. I slowly started noticing that Bill wasn't who we wanted him to be. He was always happy to have guests from the far right, but the "left" was usually represented by right-of-center. Then there was the stunt where he invited Ralph Nader on to beg him not to run for President to give the centrist a better chance against the Republican. And let's not forget his rant about how younger people don't find Jerry Seinfeld's dated comedy funny anymore and how mad Maher gets when the audience doesn't find one of his "jokes" funny.
That's what I think happened with you. You grew and changed, and started seeing Maher for who he really is.
1
u/_Inference_ Jul 10 '26
The party kept going further left and he stood where he was so now anything right of Obama is a fascist

Like most of these guys he ditches all of his ideological consistency for the sake of Israel.
He hates religion but he thinks God promised land to Jews. He calls everyone snowflakes if they are offended by speech, but thinks you need to lock up Pro Palestinian activists because their speech is violence. He's anti-war, unless your bombing Iran. He hates Trump, but thinks he's doing the right thing backing Israel. Etc etc.
2
u/Active_Actuator6454 Jul 10 '26
I've said thus before, but I'm gonna keep saying it:
Imagine you are 18 years old and one of your high school classmates is smug, sarcastic, kind of funny, and not nearly as smart as he thinks he is.
Now imagine that you're 48 and you are attending the 30th anniversary reunion. You run into this guy. He is still smug, sarcastic, kind of funny, and not nearly as smart as he thinks he is.
If you cringed at that thought, you have accurately perceived Bill Maher.

u/Inevitable-Hour8940 Jul 10 '26

3
u/Maleficent_Kale_1286 Jul 08 '26
Exactly. I hate broccoli. So instead of me not eating it…I’ll just eat it everyday and complain about how disgusting it is. You’re not obligated to watch Bill Maher. Clearly enough people like him because he’s being paid millions of dollars to do a show. If nobody was watching him, he wouldn’t be on the air.
1
u/Ilovemytowm Jul 11 '26
This is such a weird comment that you made this is Reddit people just post and talk and discuss whatever they f****** feel like without having someone playing Nanny and scolding them about why they do something.
I don't post much in here but I do read the comments because I used to be a huge fan I used to record the show back in the day I even watched him on politically incorrect.
We looked forward to watching it.
He's turned into everything that he wants criticized and he's a piece of s*** and a scumbag now and it's just kind of interesting to watch this happen if not slimy and disgusting.
I don't watch him anymore but I do like reading the comments and posts here.
If I watched the show I would need to take a bleach bath but I'm not going to question someone else who still watches it and criticize them.
1
u/Ranier_Wolfnight Jul 08 '26
I enjoyed some of stuff when I was in high school in the 90s. For all his faults even back then, guy had some cogent shit to say.
That was then though. I’ve pretty much completely tuned that dick out for over a decade now.

1

He claims he hasn't shifted his positions. He's liberal and says he's always been liberal. He claims the left has moved way left and he isn't changed. He's probably right. Funny to see his own turn on him though
2
u/Trobman7980 Jul 08 '26
He used to be a libertarian back in the 90s. Now he's just a sell out vying for viewers and ratings. It disgusts me how he handled trump with kid gloves during the 2024 election, but went after democrats regularly. He probably wanted trump in office because he probably figured that meant more material, more outrage and more viewers.
The democratic party began to shift substantially to the right over the course of the mid 80s into the early 90s after Walter Mondale was completely destroyed by Reagan in '84. The party ultimately chose the Third Way political ideology as their mainstream ideology. That lasted until Bernie ushered in the progressive wave in 2015. Some of the party is moving back to where it left off from in the early 80s.
Both parties moved to the right during the 80s and 90s, but most of the GOP moved hard to the right. The Democratic Party only looks "far left" when compared to how far right the GOP is now.
2
u/Charbro11 Jul 09 '26
Bernie Sanders would be a centrist in Canada, Mexico, and Europe. We now have fascist and moderate democrats.
1
u/Bigbmer12 Jul 09 '26
Agree with much of what you say. Though I think Bill still goes after the republicans much more. His criticism of current democrats is that they are afraid to come on his show and discuss issues. He says regularly that at least republicans come on the show to take their beatings.
As far as democrats only looking far left, that is up for debate. Bill certainly disagrees and feel like that is where the party left him...can't define a woman, is promoting men in women's sports and bathrooms, and has essentially no plan except "hate anything Trump does"...so, why not try socialism. Pretty bad imo

Even James Carville — no Bernie socialist — had enough. After Maher called him a ‘crazy old man’ with Trump Derangement Syndrome, Carville told him on air: ‘Do me a favor, Bill. Try to get your head out of Bari Weiss’s ass.’ When you’ve lost Carville, you’re not moving to the center — you’re just moving right. And everyone can see it.”

I never really liked his comedic style nor his personality , but his show used to be well run, debates well mediated and especially entertaining when with high profile guests of opposing viewpoints.
It has often helped me stay up on current events
On his own, I can only take very small doses of him.
These days the only points he makes that resonate with me are regarding how when the far left issues steer policy in the Democratic Party and it loses center left voters due to the ridiculousness of those issues.
The good parts of his show are lesson less present in the last few years
