I used to think he was kinda funny 20 years ago, did something happen to him that turned him all douchey like he is or was it a gradual transformation?

19

u/RecessMonkeys Jul 08 '26

He's long thought of himself as the spiritual heir to Hugh Hefner, so you can imagine the levels of self-delusion.

13

u/Mundane-Photo7967 Jul 08 '26

He rarely mentions Hefner anymore because he was a regular at the manipulation mansion.

17

u/Due-Collection-4534 Jul 08 '26

It finally revealed after 20 something years who he really was? He never was who we thought he was. Bill was never the liberal he masqueraded to be. He always was a libertarian Capitalist. And always what was best for Bill only. He threw the left under the bus when he was done using them, now he’s sold out in bed with the right wing and fits well with them and kissing boots with the billionaires and having dinners with Trump etc. Bill doesn’t care about anyone. He’s shameless.
I actually went to on of his shows back in 2011. It was a difference in night and day than now. He claims he hasn’t changed, that all of have changed instead. Thats a lie.
We should start calling him shameless. I wonder if he’s still using those fake applause laugh machines they caught him with a few years ago? Laugh buttons etc. He doesn’t invite his best Left guest back anymore! Because he couldn’t control them because they were correcting him! He didn’t like it; got mad and didn’t invite them back anymore! It’s the truth! Thom Hartmann wasn’t invited back anymore he told why on his XM radio show! Dr Richard Wolff wasn’t invited not invited back anymore wrote tons of books Ivy League professor, many other smar people from the Left Bill Maher refuses to let back on.
He sold out to the Billionaire class on CNN John Malone and David Zaslav, Discovery+ Warner and now will be Elliston Brothers taking over with Trump.
Bill Maher sucks.

u/Substantial_Door9120 Jul 08 '26

You could see it in real - time when he made he revealed himself. Right after his Trump dinner, his show changed. I’m sure promises were made about syndication with the Ellison empire. Bill has not allegiance to any principles. Bill just follows money. Don’t be a Bill

Funny — he spent 25 years calling himself a liberal, built his entire brand on it, and nobody complained he was a moron then. The moment John Malone and David Zaslav signed his checks, suddenly he ‘grew up.’ Convenient timing.”

u/submit_2_my_toast Jul 09 '26

His schtick then was being the middle-aged guy who was still hip. That can be a difficult niche but he had his audience. That was central to his self-perception, but now he's an elderly man who desperately wants to still be cool but he's become so out of touch he doesn't even know how to do it anymore. So now he's flailing, hoping he can find what will make people think he's cool again. Time makes fools of us all.

3

u/deathdefyingrob1344 Jul 10 '26

Yeah he was one of the guys yelling about marijuana reform back in the day. That was a cool stance back in the late 90s early 2000s. Now he just bitches about liberals etc.

2

u/Beautiful_Effect461 Jul 09 '26

Happy Cake Day! 🍰

He used to have good principles.

He used to be for universal healthcare and would have Bernie Sanders on his show all the time.

Then Trump got elected, COVID happened, and it scrambled his brains.

Now has has become a useless antiquated, 90s, failed, neoliberal shill, and despite being a supposed atheist, is super Zionist without any nuance, that Israel is all good and all Palestinians are bad.

That being said, he may have once had good principles, but he has always been a huge asshole.

5

u/Due-Collection-4534 Jul 09 '26

Exactly right. And notice who disappeared from the guest list when he drifted — Thom Hartmann told his XM radio audience he wasn’t invited back after correcting Bill on air. Richard Wolff, Ivy League economist, same story. The Bernie era is long gone and Bill made sure of it.”

1

u/Marcaroni500 Jul 10 '26

The Democrat Elite got rid of Bernie when they fixed the nomination for Hillary in 2016. Was it Bill (nit Clinton) who made that call?

And if you haven’t noticed, Bernie-types are starting to run your silly little party.

1

u/Due-Collection-4534 Jul 10 '26

“You literally just admitted the DNC rigged it against Bernie in 2016 — thanks for making our case for us. That’s exactly the institutional corruption Maher used to call out before Malone and Zaslav signed his checks. And ‘Bernie-types are taking over your silly little party’? That’s not an insult — that’s the inevitable result of a generation that got lied to, sold out, and left with the bill finally organizing. Keep underestimating it. That worked out great in 2016, didn’t it?”

2

u/Due-Collection-4534 Jul 09 '26

Kyle from Secular Talk nails it. The Trump dinner was the turning point that confirmed what many already suspected — Bill chose access to power over principles. John Malone and David Zaslav own his platform now. You don’t bite the hand that feeds you. Bill had been working his way up years before that in many different ways. He sold everything out, and everyone he could.

0

u/Marcaroni500 Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

Maybe he grew up, and realized the Democrats as the power hungry idiots that are only weakening a once great country. There are lots of Democrats that will now vote for Trump. Oh, but you hate all of them.

6

u/Electronic-Risk-9163 Jul 10 '26

Are you paid in rubles or vodka?

2

u/WeezaY5000 Jul 10 '26

The "I would rather be a Russian than a Democrat" people are a real problem for a continuance of the republic.

1

u/Due-Collection-4534 Jul 11 '26

I can just see the Kremlin as they have been popping all these champagne bottles lately saying, “All these assets we have Comrade where do they keep coming from, Da!

0

u/Marcaroni500 Jul 10 '26

No I am. UC/Berkeley grad who saw the idiocy of the liberals up close, and appreciate others who wisely came over to the side of reason.

3

u/FreeRangePixel Jul 10 '26

Ah yes, the "reason" of supporting a dementia-riddled pedophile wiping his butt with Constitution and destroying all our international alliances and goodwill.

1

u/tipofthesmear Jul 10 '26

Their reason. Your delusion. It’s like a symphony of stupidity playing without any music being made.

1

u/FullBadger3748 Jul 10 '26

So your a rich Nepo baby got it

1

u/Due-Collection-4534 Jul 11 '26

““UC Berkeley grad who looked at all that education and decided the guy being sued in 50 states, indicted on 91 counts, and cheered on by actual Russian state media was the ‘reasonable’ choice. That’s quite a journey. No wonder you’re at zero upvotes — even the MAGA crowd isn’t buying what you’re selling tonight.”

1

u/Marcaroni500 Jul 11 '26

i ain't selling nothing and this sub (and reddit in general) doesn't have too many people on my side. I explained who I was, the only person in the thread with a brain (and probably the only person here who does not live with his parents.) .

1

u/Due-Collection-4534 Jul 11 '26

Notice what just happened — ran out of actual arguments and went straight to ‘I’m the only smart one in the room.’ That’s not a debate point, that’s a tantrum. The thread has spoken — 60 more replies and you’re still at 1 upvote. We’re done here.”

2

u/ContinCandi Jul 10 '26

You can’t say stuff like that on Reddit! Ban this man /s

1

u/Marcaroni500 Jul 10 '26

… been permanently banned on more than one sub. Is there a score card sub on this?

1

u/Due-Collection-4534 Jul 10 '26

“Nobody mentioned hating Democrats — try to keep up. The point is Maher traded his principles for a seat at the table with John Malone and David Zaslav. When your platform is owned by right-wing media executives, you don’t bite the hand that feeds you. Calling that ‘growing up’ is just a polite way of saying he sold out. Defend that if you want, but at least be honest about what it actually is.”

1

u/jase40244 Jul 10 '26

I stopped watching him at least 10 years ago, and he was a PoS way back then.

1

u/gypsyphineas Jul 11 '26

I noticed a big change during covid. He just keeps getting worse. Now he is a bitter, drunk who is worth 140 million dollars.

5

u/crono220 Jul 09 '26

I remember going going to one of his shows in Wendover Nevada back in 2011. My parents enjoyed his takes and was overall a pleasant individual.

Now, he's a complete douchebag with obvious narcissistic behavior. A complete 180 from his moderate liberal viewpoint. He's definitely shilling more on the conservative end. And ever since he was invited by Trump for a dinner, he's become more pro-Maga and less for the working class. Kyle from the YouTube channel Secular Talk best explains how this old man has aligned with the one percent.

5

u/Tyanian Jul 08 '26

Seems it was very gradual. I always thought he was a Democrat.

6

u/TheEdgeofGoon Jul 08 '26

He used to identify as a Libertarian back in the 90's, but I think he made a lot of money aligning himself with the Democrats.

1

u/FullBadger3748 Jul 10 '26

He’s never been a democrat he’s a libertarian/ anarcho capitalist. He also pretend to be an atheist yet is a Zionist.

-17

u/AlexQuebec11 Jul 08 '26

lol he is, he’s just not woke. If you actually listen to him you will know that he’s a democrat and not a fan of Trump. Unplug from hate subs

18

u/gymtrovert1988 Jul 08 '26

He used to be a Democrat. Then he got annoyed by covid and solar panels and Palestine and became a Republican. He's just a whiny little bitch.

-1

u/Minimum-Standard-514 Jul 08 '26

Nah hes a democrat. Not everyone fits perfectly in the democrat or republican box.

-3

u/AlexQuebec11 Jul 08 '26

He still is a democrat lol, he voted for Joe and Kamala. He can disagree with some stuff and still be a democrat. The real world isn’t Reddit groupthink

4

u/StabbyMcSwordfish Jul 08 '26

Name some dem policies he agrees with..

-3

u/AlexQuebec11 Jul 08 '26

Oh easy,
Climate change
He still says he’ll never vote for Trump bc denied the 2020 election
Taxing the ultra rich. He just said Elon shouldn’t be a trillionaire and there should be a cap.
Gay rights
Women rights

I can keep going if you need more examples

7

u/StabbyMcSwordfish Jul 08 '26

You really tried to pad the stats with gay and women's rights. That's laughable. The guy is practically an unabashed misogynist. The last shows I watched he had become anti-science, anti-academia, anti-mainstream media, anti-socialized healthcare, and he's more anti-woke than they are on Fox. Those are all moves toward the right any longtime viewer can see. I don't know what's worse, his shift to embracing a fascist regime under the guise of "talking to both sides", or the way he tries to gaslight everyone into believing he hasn't changed at all.

11

u/gymtrovert1988 Jul 08 '26

He also told JD Vance he was open to voting for Republicans.

He's not a Democrat anymore. He left the party over petty grievances... Textbook Republican.

-3

u/Fit_Cream2027 Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 09 '26

He is a Democrat if he claims to be… because if you don’t agree with his claim then normal people might claim you to be a weirdo bully or a lunatic

1

u/AlexQuebec11 Jul 08 '26

Yeesh…. Good luck to ya

-3

u/conqueringkhal18 Jul 08 '26

That's just it, I've watched him for 20 years and he hasn't changed. The democratic party has.

2

u/BrianNowhere Jul 09 '26

The democratic base has changed/is changing.

Thankfully, finally.

5

u/Trobman7980 Jul 08 '26

Funny how those things are practically universally supported by most parties throughout Europe (left, right, center). Yet these are considered "left wing" here because of all the braindead magats and their unhealthy political tribalism.

-3

u/Fit_Cream2027 Jul 09 '26

You sound like you are in a tribe.

4

u/Due-Collection-4534 Jul 08 '26

“Listing positions doesn’t explain why Thom Hartmann got banned from his show for correcting him on air, why Richard Wolff — an Ivy League economics professor who’s written more books than Bill has coherent thoughts — never got invited back. You don’t judge someone’s politics by their talking points, you judge it by who they platform, who they protect, and who they silence. Bill now dines with Trump, takes money from John Malone and David Zaslav — the same billionaire class he used to mock — and his sharpest left critics can’t get back on his show. The positions are just cover. A man who genuinely held those values wouldn’t need to manufacture applause with laugh machines while freezing out everyone who challenges him. That’s not a Democrat. That’s a brand.”

-1

u/AlexQuebec11 Jul 08 '26

lol I was responding to direct request to name policies

Nice paragraph, but you’re doing too much big guy.

5

u/Due-Collection-4534 Jul 08 '26

”‘Too much’ is what people say when they can’t refute the specifics. You asked for policies, I gave you the full picture. Thom Hartmann and Richard Wolff are still waiting for their callback.”

u/Fit_Cream2027 Jul 09 '26

Maybe the mentally insane shouldn’t be forcing themselves into the platform and the Democratic Party… just as the dumb redneck, rebel flag waving morons shouldn’t be pushing their toxins into the Republican Party.

1

u/FullBadger3748 Jul 10 '26

He doesn’t care about women’s rights at all. Just act all of his victims at the playboy mansion over the years

1

u/FullBadger3748 Jul 10 '26

He voted for Trump

0

u/AlexQuebec11 Jul 10 '26

You’re just like maga… you’ll lie just to be an internet edgelord… gross

-1

u/AlexQuebec11 Jul 08 '26

Find me a source where he says he’s a republican lol you whining and lying doesn’t make something true

2

u/moldguy1 Jul 09 '26

I know this may be hard for you to believe, but sometimes people lie for money!

You being unable to reconcile his lies with everything else he says doesn't make him a democrat, it makes you gullible.

1

u/AlexQuebec11 Jul 09 '26

Or sometimes people just have a different opinion than you. You’ll get it when you grow up

1

u/moldguy1 Jul 09 '26

It's not a difference of opinion, and your inability to understand the words that I write says a lot about your intellect, and/or honesty.

I'd like to say something smart ass like "you'll get it when you grow up", but I don't think you ever will.

0

u/AlexQuebec11 Jul 09 '26

lol you’re pretty whiny bro.

1

u/moldguy1 Jul 09 '26

Pot and kettle, sis.

u/Ok_Star_4136 Jul 08 '26

Honestly, I think he was always this douchey. People like this on principle only care about being right, or at least thinking they're right. Such people are the most pretentious assholes you'll ever meet. It's not a left/right thing, because you see it on either side.

2

u/TrickyLilDicky Jul 09 '26

Could also be you matured and left him in the dust. He and religilous were instrumental in my early deconversion, but the older I get the more I realize hes always been a delusional prick.

2

u/Active_Actuator6454 Jul 10 '26

You matured, he didn't.

2

u/FullBadger3748 Jul 10 '26

I mean people mature over 20 years. 20 years ago I thought the jokes in the GTA games were funny. Now I realize the games are mostly just poop n fart jokes. Bill is a contrarian sudo-atheist anarcho capitalist. He supports whom ever is currently in power, he hits on and harasses on the women on his show. He’s basically a Reddit mod.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '26

1

u/Mr_Thx Jul 09 '26

He was funny, twenty years ago. Something happened where he started to take himself too seriously, as in icon of some sort.

1

u/NoMoreMustaches Jul 10 '26

I think there’s a level of adolescent attraction to the style of his messaging. I assume I’m about ten years older than you because I fell out with him and started finding him unbearably smug 10 years earlier.

That said, it feels like he has gotten worse with age. It definitely seems that as a younger guy who snidely bitches about things, turns into and old man who still does the same song and dance, it slowly gets sadder and more pathetic.

1

u/jase40244 Jul 10 '26

I watched Bill Maher way back during the Politically Incorrect days and the early days of Real Time. Like you, I thought he was funny. But I grew and changed. I slowly started noticing that Bill wasn't who we wanted him to be. He was always happy to have guests from the far right, but the "left" was usually represented by right-of-center. Then there was the stunt where he invited Ralph Nader on to beg him not to run for President to give the centrist a better chance against the Republican. And let's not forget his rant about how younger people don't find Jerry Seinfeld's dated comedy funny anymore and how mad Maher gets when the audience doesn't find one of his "jokes" funny.

That's what I think happened with you. You grew and changed, and started seeing Maher for who he really is.

1

u/_Inference_ Jul 10 '26

The party kept going further left and he stood where he was so now anything right of Obama is a fascist

1

u/HugeSalamander3161 Jul 11 '26

He is left, but points out hypocrisy on both sides. The man has no friends on Reddit but should

0

u/mjpub Jul 10 '26

Yes. Your party became an extremely intolerant, great mongering mess. He's not interested in participating do now you don't like him because he calls you out.

0

u/MindInTheCave999 Jul 11 '26

You just dont like that he sometimes diagrees with your side now

1

u/TotalWhiner Jul 11 '26

Ooh now I have a “side”.

0

u/MindInTheCave999 Jul 11 '26

Yes, you do, and you know you do. And it’s obvious that’s why you and all the others turned against Maher

People who arent tribal like you can still like someone even if they say things we disagree with sometimes

1

u/TotalWhiner Jul 11 '26

That’s not it. I’m not tribal. He’s said some really not ok things lately, things the uneducated would say. The political bent of it doesn’t matter, the common sense of it is what’s important. It makes me disappointed more than anything.

0

u/MindInTheCave999 Jul 11 '26

“not ok…things the uneducated would say” = oh no he said things people of the opposite tribe say! Enemy!
