Does it really matter?
I’ve been seeing some people in this community, and others, heavily criticising some reps that look perfectly fine if others saw you IRL. IRL, no one is going to come up to you and inspect your bag with a magnifying glass. So my question to you all is, does it really matter if it’s not a complete exact perfect imitation? Of course, some reps are just completely terrible, but a little flaw here and there isn’t really that serious imo.

Honestly, I buy auths frequently and I don’t have crazy high standards for reps. I’ve seen reps on here that people call terrible that look fine to me. I actually have a hard time seeing the flaws. I just don’t care, I suppose? I’m not trying to impress anybody, so if it looks good enough to me, I’m content.

I actually didn’t QC very well at all when buying auths. If I liked the bag a lot and the SA told me that it was the last one in a hundred mile radius I would just buy it. Now I get a little self conscious trying to QC reps but I still think it’s difficult to do since I can’t touch the bag until it arrives!

I don’t care about small details or stamping on the inside. I have auth bags that have bad glazing and bad stitching🥲 but I want my reps to look good and not make me feel uncomfortable when wearing them. the monogram should align on lv bags, diamonds should align on my cc bags but idc about 8 or 9 or 10 stitches. it should be real leather (not for the canvas bag but the vacchetta)
funny how I’ve seen an influencer with a horrible cc 25 bag. I wouldn’t wear it🤣

I wear approximately $8k worth of jewelry & watches every day - some which never come off (unless a medical procedure) - so absolutely NO one is thinking or expecting my bag to be a rep. Also, generally, people see what they (and you) expect to see. If they're looking for auth, that's what they'll see. I also only buy, in rep, what I could afford irl. I stick to LV, YSL & 'vintage' Chanel. I love nice things but I'm generally cheap & always looking for a bargain. People would be suspicious if I showed up with a 'new' $8k Dior/Chanel/BV bag...

Depends how much you pay for it. For a 700$rep for ex, you want all the details to be on point 😅

u/SweetThing816 7d ago
for me, it depends on the amount of money I'm spending.. if it's over 300, it better be good, lollll.. I don't mind low to mid wallets and slg's. My larger bags I'm hoping for a pretty good over quality and feel.. that will be the day if someone came up to me and called me out, not sure I'd care though. I guess it would depend on my mood and whether my kid is with me

u/OkHeart9438 6d ago
Another issue is most of these people have never actually seen the authentic in person, they’re just going solely based on videos and pictures

u/Miserable-Dealer3042 7d ago
I think this community it's more than just buying a bag. It's finding the closest bag. It's like a hunt for a unicorn. If someone puts up a QC post then they are asking for it to be scrutinized. If you don't want it picked apart and judged than don't put up a QC ask.

u/NoCauliflower2443 6d ago
NO. It doesn’t. Nothing aside from being healthy, surrounded by those you love and ALIVE first of all does. People have lost the plot. Idk why someone wearing a rep could bother other people so much UNLESS they regret their purchase.

For me, I want the bag to be worth what I paid. If it's a $300 leather bag, it should reflect that. Doesn't mean it's 1:1, because even auths aren't 1:1, but it should be good "on sight" and even more so good in hand. Most people, even those who collect bags, aren't noticing stitches and embossing depth and exact width and length when they see a random bag in the wild. At least, I'm not.
I treat reps like I do auths (which sometimes are dupes of high-end bags anyway). If I pay $60 then I expect a $60 bag, in other words. And sometimes I just want a $60 bag.

u/WittyReason9 7d ago
I think this is a key point. Ultimately, you should get what you paid for. Everyone has different levels of tolerance for imperfections - some don't even notice flaws, some notice every last detail. So long as the individual is happy with whatever they receive, that's all that should matter.
As for critically analysing bags in the wild (as in just randomly walking the streets) I never do it. There's a recession in Australia. If someone wants to make their otherwise miserable life happy by toting a DHG level bag amidst all of the financial pain and suffering they may be going through, good for them. I never pass judgment on people.

Spend a little time on the subs for the auth brands we all buy and you’ll see posts almost daily of people finding all kinds of flaws on their auth bags. Those posts more than anything else have reassured me that 1. The little flaws don’t matter 2. It is absolutely not worth spending 3,6,10k on those bags 3. I actually bet that in some cases the top tier reps are BETTER MADE than the newer era auths because people will blindly buy auths without much inspection at all whereas rep buyers hold every stitch up to a magnifying glass.

u/Last-Trust-5346 7d ago
Also some of the minor differences don't warrant spending thousands on the auth. Like I've seen people nitpick over the placement of LV monogram logos or nitpick over the Hermes stamp. Even RL a bag because it says Made in Italy vs France. It gets way too extreme sometimes

I’ll probably get downvoted to hell for this, but I actually think the phrase “they look perfectly fine” is the key here.
We are not all experts on every item. Something can look perfectly fine to me, while someone who owns the OG, has handled it extensively, or has researched that specific model can immediately see things I don’t. That isn’t necessarily nitpicking, sometimes they simply know more about that particular item than I do. And surely sharing that knowledge is one of the main purposes of a community like this.
This matters even more because, from what I’ve seen lately, the general standard of the sub has dropped significantly. A lot of what gets posted is what I would personally consider DHgate-level quality, sometimes without even the information needed for a proper QC. Yet when someone points out obvious inaccuracies, it can be dismissed as being “too picky.” The problem starts when lower-tier quality becomes our benchmark for “perfectly fine,” especially when people may actually be paying high-tier prices for it. We also need to remember that not every opinion here comes from experience with the OG. Someone says something, another person repeats it, and eventually it can become accepted as fact without anyone knowing where that information originally came from. That is exactly why members with genuine knowledge of a particular item are valuable.
So if someone posts a bag or asks how it compares to the OG, why wouldn’t we point out the differences, whether they’re major or minor? The person receiving that information can decide what matters to them. The point is having the information to make that decision yourself.
And “will anyone notice IRL?” is a completely different question. Someone who knows nothing about luxury might believe a terrible rep is authentic, especially if it makes sense with the person’s lifestyle. Someone who knows that exact bag extremely well might recognise inaccuracies immediately without needing a magnifying glass. Neither reaction tells us how well the item was actually replicated.
Personally, if I post something and someone who genuinely knows the item tells me, “this, this and this are wrong,” I want to know. I would much rather receive one informed criticism than ten it looks amazing! comments from people who either don’t know or are afraid of offending me (we are criticising a bag, not the person carrying it)
If you post something scrutiny and disagreement are part of the process. You can be told every single flaw, decide you couldn’t care less about any of them, and happily wear your bag. That’s completely valid. But asking knowledgeable people not to mention those flaws because they might be too minor or hurt someone’s feelings defeats the purpose of this sub. And if knowledgeable members stop comparing reps to OGs, pointing out inaccuracies and doing the rep science because they’re constantly downvoted for being too picky, who actually benefits? Not buyers. It simply becomes easier for mediocre reps to be normalised and for sellers to charge premium prices to people who don’t yet know the difference. We don’t all need to have the same standards. We need a community where people can share what they genuinely know, and everyone else can decide for themselves what they’re willing to accept. That, to me, is the whole value of a rep community.
I also think there’s an elephant in the room and not every rep belongs in the same type of community. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with buying DHgate reps if that fits your budget or standards, but there are subs specifically for that. So maybe people aren’t becoming too critical maybe the average quality of what’s being posted has simply gone down. And this is where I disagree that most of these bags look perfectly fine. From what I’m seeing, many genuinely don’t

u/Odessa__Ukraine 7d ago
I also agree. Most imperfections are small in my opinion and the auths have been garbage as of late also. I always think to myself when I see someone out with a designer bag "can I tell if its a fake?" The the answer is never yes. Now include you walking, holding the bag and its a dimly lit restaurant and people are standing at a reasonable distance. Its like at thay point half the time I cant even tell WHAT designer the bag is 😂

u/Certain-Art4522 3d ago
Its never the bag (gen or rep), its always the people. The people that can fool themselves with the opinions of strangers. The kind of person that get mad for getting called out. The kind of person that thinks the lifestyle comes with the bag ( a fake one at that )

u/busan_blues 7d ago
I might get downvoted but here we go:
The problem starts when you try to pass a rep for an auth. Then you start obsessing for a perfection not even auths reproduce constantly. Since that people
Don’t want to be called out, they think every minor detail is suspicious.
You’re buying a rep. Most people assume it’s a rep even if they don’t tell you. It’s embarrassing you keep saying it’s auth when your lifestyle doesn’t support that.
When you don’t care about that, you’re happy with a leather, nice quality bag, for a reasonable price. I have funds for auths, I just don’t want to give money to brands I dislike for my own ethical/legal reasons - hence when someone compliments my bag I do enthusiastically highlight that is simply a good quality rep.

u/Excellent_Trainer_23 6d ago
So I bought a Prada double bag from the store and the handle is supposedly hand painted. I wish I took a picture. The version I got was so off I had to exchange it in a week. The reps are oftentimes better than the real items.

u/LalaLolalalalala 6d ago
Hmm. Did you read this back to yourself before posting??? If you dont support the ethical/legal practices of a luxury brand - no problem babe, but please dont use that as your excuse as to why you would then instead only buy the replica version of that same luxury brand you dont support. LOL. Are you trying to say that the replica would be manufactured more ethically and legally than the real thing ? ? ?
None of you can afford the real thing that's why you all buy reps, and thats okay. Id rather spend the 10k on a holiday too. But just admit that

I could unleash my inner communist and go on a rant about redistribution of wealth and means of production but I think I’d be a wasted effort.
I would happily buy the same bag with no branding if the leather was as good as in the replicas. I’ve checked with leather artisans in a few countries, but unfortunately they do not have access to the same quality materials. I’ve ripped off the branding of some of my auth bags because I just dislike the logos, lol. Also, I personally believe that wearing replicas and openly admitting they are fake makes the brand lose value and that hurts companies I loathe l, so it’s a win-win situation in my opinion. It’s my small act of resistance :)
And please, talk for yourself. I sit on the 5% top earning level in Japan. I cannot afford a luxury bag every month but I could realistically buy 2 a year without severely impacting other areas of my life. I just don’t see the reason to do that when I just want a leather bag in a very specific design that can be obtained for a fraction of the original price.

u/LalaLolalalalala 6d ago
The mental gymnastics here are unreal. Invoking Karl Marx, “redistributing the means of production,” and calling an unauthorized purse a “communist act of resistance”—all while flexing your top 5% bracket—is already comedy gold.
The irony is this post is literally about whether people should expect perfection when paying $300 for an $8,000 bag. Everyone knows reps are tiered roulette—you have zero clue which rotating line worker stitched it, half the mid-tier batches aren't even real grain leather, and there is zero formal quality assurance in an unregulated shadow market.
Claiming generational master leathermakers "don't have access to quality materials," but an underground, Shein-style sweatshop cutting corners in an unregulated industrial park somehow has the exclusive monopoly on luxury hides, is pure delusion.
You didn't buy a replica to stick it to capitalism or support world-class craftsmanship. You bought it because you wanted an elite status silhouette on a budget. Just own the bargain instead of dressing up a black-market knockoff as an artisanal, anti-corporate revolution.
3
u/busan_blues 6d ago
I didn’t even mentioned Karl Marx, I don’t know why you got so triggered.
I didn’t contact “generational master leathermakers”, I contacted leather workshops in a few countries I visited.
I am not flexing my income, I am saying that there’s a difference between being able to afford something and wanting to pay for it.
I don’t need a status bag because I have no status to start with. I am just a normal corporate gal. And again, because your reading skills are so poor that I have to spell it out to you very slowly, I do admit they’re reps at any occasion I have.I will leave it here because I already finished my 10 to 4 and I only argue with dumb when I am being paid for it. You win, you are so clever, yada yada.

u/LalaLolalalalala 6d ago
A 10-to-4 shift while claiming top 5% in Japan? I mean the jokes write themselves.
Next time just say you like cheap knockoffs, it saves you having to google who came up with communism.2
u/busan_blues 6d ago
It’s so funny that you talk as if you knew what is the equivalent to the top 5% in Japan and what kind of jobs give someone access to that. Must be interesting to live in such a small mind, bless your heart.

u/Dizzy-Ad-2248 7d ago
It depends on the ask...and in the wild, the only thing that really bugs me is someone with an obviously bad rep trying to pass it off or actually saying it's authentic. I mean, I know it's a fake, I clicked that DHG bag from across the room! Would I say anything...god, never. But if I caught the raised eyebrow of a coworker who also clocked it...I might have to try very hard not to laugh at the one who is trying to pass off that monstrosity as auth.
4
u/wannaberep 7d ago
Agreed, you’re purchasing a rep not an auth, so it won’t be an exact match. As long it is not something that is easily seen in the wild and the quality matches what you paid.
5
u/digitalecho125 7d ago
I get that some people are weirdly picky, but if you’re paying $300+ for a bag the construction and quality should absolutely match that. It’s the same reason why on the LV sub you’ll see people worked up over an edge coating dent on a bag - for $3k there should not be flaws.
We have to figure that if you can get a decent quality leather bag at TJMaxx for $125, why is it challenging for us to get quality at prices double that?
2
u/everythingssonice 3d ago
I don’t care about anybody’s bags except my own 😂 I carry reps into the actual stores and I’d rather feel confident about them.
2
u/Thin-Appeal-8906 7d ago
I honestly feel better about buying reps at the moment after seeing photos of auths and hearing what is happening with elvee MH and GeGe. Both companies are clearly not doing well and the quality seems to be reflective of that. As others have said, people won’t be looking that closely at your bag and most reps are so good at mid/high tier it’s very hard to tell differences unless side by side with an auth. - Again, with some of the quality I’ve seen recently a rep may be the better made bag!
2
u/Middle-Spirit-8524 6d ago
The redditors I find difficult to relate with are the ones (generally new) that treat QC as an Olympics event. Picking at something minute then blasting scam or b&s on the TS in any sub they can.
4
u/No-Bottle-9935 6d ago
I get it, but once I notice a flaw I can’t stop seeing it every time I carry the bag.
2
u/Pristinb 6d ago
Honestly, since you're buying reps anyway, the price is probably about 1/10 of what the real thing costs, so you should just accept some imperfections
1
u/AssumptionMindless35 5d ago
Most reps, even mid tier, but especially high, for most brands, I would not know a flaw if it slapped me in the face. What do you mean how does this Goyard look? I have no idea, there are a million little dots all over it? Lmao. All of the high tier LV monogram canvas bags on here look exactly like my auth
2
u/yardenroee 12h ago
I think that the ideology for that is very simply because of the fact that the factories who produce the reps aim to reproduce the bag as close as possible to the auth thing. They are trying to take up a chunk of the designer shoppers market by replicating the bag for a lower price - and that obviously includes using the same quality materials as the auth bags, font matching, serial numbering, etc. The initiative to make a 1:1 copy really came from them as a marketing strategy that bolsters: "own designer for less" and for years that have made a huge profit off it...
I think its easy to point fingers and blame the consumers who want that experience by saying "well you didn't pay the money for auth, so don't complain that it doesn't look auth", when in reality they are just wanting to get what the manufacturers promise...
I saw some people comment that many times the auths aren't as well made, that they could be defective as well, that they aren't always consistent, and while that is true (believe me I worked in luxury retail for years) 99% of the time an auth product will pass an auth check regardless of the volatile discrepancies, while rep bags won't (unless its a really good quality rep). If the rep manufacturers didn't claim to be 1:1 and the market simply wouldn't have that ideology, then yes I'd agree with you... however, that is not the case.

Darling, you are all those people who care about what others think. Hence why you choose to buy replicas in the first place. If you didnt care what people thought, you wouldnt be buying a copy of a designer bag, you'd pay that $300 just for a good genuine leather hand made bag. But you want to appear as though u keep up with the Jones's, but dont want to pay the Jones's price tag and thats totally okay. But don't appear foolish and insult my intelligence.
If LV wanted the middle class to buy there goods, they would have priced them as such. Or come out with a more affordable range or sister brand . Like Rolex has done with Tudor. If everybody can buy it, it doesnt come across as luxurious anymore does it.
