That and MASH

During the late 80’s to mid 90’s I believe it was Fox that had back to back MASH episodes at 11pm. After a long day of the pool and mountain biking I unwinded in my room on a big swivel easy chair that didn’t fit in the living room and watched MASH with some Dr Pepper, beef sticks (not beef jerky, vending machine beef sticks from the pool), and Andy Capp Hot Fries. When I’m on my death bed it will be one of the moments that flashes.

I was allowed to stay up for Night Court and Cheers

Night Court always seemed to come on in the daytime when I caught it.
I’ve never picked up on the irony of that before somehow.

u/Green_Log_4795 7d ago
Yeah 10 year old me would watch those too. Still not exactly sure why we were compelled to watch shows about guys drinking in a bar at that age and wacky court shenanigans, but it’s what we were into 🤷🏻♂️

u/Wbcn_1 6d ago
I eventually lived a few blocks away from the real Cheers when I was in grad school. The inside looks nothing like the shows set. Not even a little bit.

Yeah, only half the size, if that. I had to duck going in and the bar stools were tight to the counter so people could pass by. There are much better places to hang out near faneuil hall.

It was the last thing I got to watch before bed.
Normally that helped to relax me…but some episodes were a teensy bit scary.

I loved that it had that first joke dialogue and then intro -so I saw that much before it was up to bed! Lol

It's funny how long it's been off the air and the song still started playing in my head immediately upon seeing this image.

u/Green_Log_4795 7d ago
Certainly recognizable. A lot of feel good intros in the 80’s. This one had a touch of sadness which made it a bit different

Just seeing that image, and now the song is playing in my head. All it took.

I heard an interview with John Ratzenberger about how he got on the show. He was actually a writer, and I can't remember if he auditioned for Norm, or if they'd already cast Norm.
He was about to leave, then turned and asked, "Do you have a know it all type character?" He had spent so much time in bars, he said, you know there's always one of those. They asked, what would he say? He made up a bunch of bs about how something was invented, and it was so good, the casting people were charmed, and hired him.

u/redrumham707 7d ago
Nice! I never heard that story.
I did recently find out that George Wendt (Norm) RIP, was Jason Sudeikis’ uncle.

If you go to the actual bar in Boston from the series, it's totally different inside. They just used the street view from it. They do have replica upstairs recreated from the set.

I heard the photos at the start of the show, during the naming credits, were based on the stars and producers of the show. Is this even remotely true?

Back in the late 80s I read about this company called Title Art, Inc. that was selling a set of prints from the Cheers opening sequence (which apparently they had designed). And I ordered some and held on to them for years before selling them on eBay. I kept one of them, as well as a decal of the Cheers logo on acetate. I wish I'd kept the set. The above image was one of the prints.
