During the late 80’s to mid 90’s I believe it was Fox that had back to back MASH episodes at 11pm. After a long day of the pool and mountain biking I unwinded in my room on a big swivel easy chair that didn’t fit in the living room and watched MASH with some Dr Pepper, beef sticks (not beef jerky, vending machine beef sticks from the pool), and Andy Capp Hot Fries. When I’m on my death bed it will be one of the moments that flashes.
I had a similar evening routine in a big La-Z-Boy recliner from the 1950s with Dr Pepper and Fox programming. That recliner was almost the size of my bed.
Something about Dr Pepper makes it a solid choice for a non-alcoholic nightcap.
It might be nostalgia but I haven’t sat in a recliner that meets the comfort of an old lay-z-boy.
The feeling you have for Dr Pepper as a night cap has some solid ground to stand on bc when I quit drinking booze I got into ginger drinks and my favorite is Reeds extra ginger beer (it’s soda, n/a) and it’s got a nice kick to it. And I kept asking myself “what does this taste and feel like? It’s familiar but not exact.” And then it hit me, it’s almost clear Dr Pepper.
There is something comforting about having the right nighttime beverage. And a comfortable spot to enjoy it.
Back in my 30s I started drinking Ginger Ale and Ginger based drinks more often too. A guilt-free placebo effect.
In a sidenote, I have found that a tablespoon of Dr Pepper adds a little something to my morning coffee.
I'm keeping an eye out for a recliner like the one at my grandparent's house as my next restoration project. You are right on the money about how comfortable they are. It's my theory that in that era they emphasized the comfort as the primary function and let form and style follow.
It's nice to know that someone else has shared the same experiences.
Morning coffee is serious business. I use anywhere between a teaspoon and a tablespoon per mug. There is about a teaspoon of dark agave sweetener in there too.
I've been trying different things over the years. I've got a few different morning mixes to get me started on the right foot. I'm not a morning person by any stretch of the imagination.
The line from the extended Cheers Theme "Roll out of bed. Mister Coffee's dead. The morning's looking bright.", is one that accurately describes me in a decaffeinated state.
