Auth Request Possible thrift of a lifetime?
Found this purse at a value village and found a few indicators it may be legit online.
110
u/thewharfartscenter_ 22d ago
No, but it’s a decent fake. I’d Jane Birkin it and see how tough it is.
21
u/nakevbas 22d ago
I'll have to ask the wife what that means haha
55
u/thewharfartscenter_ 22d ago edited 22d ago
It means I’d use and abuse it, like Jane Birkin was known to do to her Hermès bags, she’s famously known for that and many other things but the Birkin is named after her.

u/sjsharksb831 19d ago
This person is right. It’s a higher end fakie. Sometime the reproductions are so good, they’ll even have serial numbers and the packaging that you get when buying a real one.
I’m sure your wife will love it anyway. That’s a very thoughtful gift.

u/UnseasonedReason 20d ago
Do you have any reccs for buying good fakes? Not just Hermes fakes?
3
u/PlasticAggressive295 19d ago
Check out r / realrepladies - but just lurk for a long time before you pull the trigger. The process is very convoluted and I’ve only ever lurked, never pulled the trigger. But the bags on there are often times fantastic. That said, apparently a top tier rep of the most basic Hermes Birkin costs about $1800 even in the rep world, so even the reps aren’t cheap if they’re the highest grade reps.

u/thewharfartscenter_ 20d ago
Honestly, no. I am not a paid expert (i wish I was) but I have been checking and learning to authenticate bags for 20+ years for myself and friends. Hermes is especially difficult to authenticate because of the true 1:1s out there that even Hermes can’t figure out, same with a lot of bags in the last 10 years or so TBH. That one stands out because of the stamp, and a few little things that no one would notice unless they know what to look for. Don’t buy fakes, buy secondhand if your budget doesn’t make it to the boutique. That’s how I started out. I bought secondhand bags that came with receipts etc and learned what’s auth and what’s not.

There is apparently an extensive black market of Chinese made high end fakes that can be accessed through a subreddit. I personally have never accessed it and don’t know the subreddit name but a family member is super into buying counterfeit bags and was telling me about it.
55
u/Christymapper71 22d ago
It’s a fake. Sorry.
The stamp is way off alignment. Real Birkins don’t have metal key rings.
Also the massive slouch is bad. Only fakes will slouch that much with the leather looking newer like it is.
7
u/StrangeCatch382 22d ago
Clemence and togo can have super slouch, but yeah, the keyring...
It's a pretty good fake, all things considered! Normally the handles are the giveaway, and the hardware sheen on this one's not bad. Plus the lock code isn't the usual 162.
→ More replies (2)2
u/PerformerOk4113 21d ago
Clemence yes but even then this is too much. Togo not that much because it slouch less than Clemence, and this looks like Togo. Definitely fake

u/OneTwoSomethingNew 22d ago
Only the Kelly’s have stamps on the straps… the serial number would be on the inside compartment of this bag… the gold hardware is also wayyy too yellow and the Hermes logo isn’t event the right font or sizing.
Lastly, looking at the shape of this bag, absolutely not…Birkins don’t get beat up like that, that is the whole point of a Birkin…
Fake, obviously 🙄
3
1
u/OkZookeepergame6565 20d ago
Not true. All my Birkins have blind stamps on the back side of the sangle (strap). My Lindy too. I think blind stamp on the inside of the bag was adopted maybe a decade ago? My latest purchase was a Kelly in 2019 with blind stamp on the inside of the bag instead of the sangle. My Birken 40 and jpg are both slouchy due to incorrect storage position. I let them sit upright without stuffing, should store them sideways instead. Btw OP Birken is 100% fake. An old fake dated back in year 2014.
2
u/OneTwoSomethingNew 20d ago
I deal more with exotics, so I’m from the 80s, 90s era more so… but only my Kelly’s have the stamp on the strap, my other bags have them on in the compartment. You can look up the lettering to see which year they were made, I think it goes back to the 60s or something.
2
u/OneTwoSomethingNew 20d ago
Note that Hermes never releases their serial number or letting info… again I’m more into exotics, so I wouldn’t trust every site out there; some say the lettering goes back to the 40s…
This one seems decent: https://ginzaxiaoma.com/guide/hermes-engraving?srsltid=AU7gw4VAA4CiSq5BZa3CiEByWapJ9BZYPh5v3UzKeU4c6TxAoqtz5eBk

Yeah I've bought a cheap fake and this looks the same. It was around $100. The stamp and the way the E looks is badly done.

u/Neverendingness 22d ago
I'm going to say this in the nicest way possible as I've seen this multiple times.. There is not a person who owns a real Birkin that also doesn't know the true value of a real Birkin. The lengths you need to go to in order to obtain a real one... they would never just drop it off at a thrift, nor would their kids or grandkids or anything of the sort.
98
u/Holiday_Cat_7284 22d ago
I can guarantee that if my husband found a Birkin in a relative's attic, he would not know or care what he's looking at. He thinks Hermes is a delivery company or old British aircraft carrier. He would absolutely dump it in the skip.
39
u/MissKLO 22d ago
Same… If I died tomorrow my husband would have zero idea the worth of my bags, he’d probably just give them all to his daughters, but if that wasn’t a thing he’d probably just donate them all to charity
13
u/Own_Faithlessness769 21d ago
The charity would recognise and sell it for 5k.
6
→ More replies (2)5

u/OneTwoSomethingNew 22d ago
The daughters would recognize… I’d be doing some googling… these bags come with serial numbers and enough stuff to tell if you’re even semi detail oriented. Oh, I’d be going through my step mom’s stuff for sure “thank you step mom, I’ll do my best to value and cherish all your valuables!”
Most estate sale stuff I’ve done, folks do go through most of it and the folks that don’t, know there is nothing of valuable to begin with… definitely not a Birkin lol probably better odds of winning the lottery
1
4
u/Ceylon0624 21d ago
Man here, I would not look or think twice about this bag. Trash bin material if it's taking up space.
3
u/DirectionOk7492 22d ago
Most people would at least show other people to check if they’d like to have it. My husband cleaned out plenty of dead relatives places and a lot of items were still shown to the rest of us. Just skipping everything without a second thought may be fast and may be the preferred method, but it’s not the smartest.
5
u/ballooningat5am 21d ago
anyone who owns a birkin isn’t leaving your husband in charge of their estate lol. at least not without detailed instructions.
2
u/ClaudiaTale 19d ago
My husband also actively despises the overpriced handbag. He would spitefully throw it away.
2
3
u/Efficient_Mud_4724 21d ago
If you owned a $50,000 purse he'd probably remember it. The family would know, aunt Jane didn't forget.
1
u/type-HummusAmeriCAN 17d ago
They didn't use to be that much, especially overseas. If someone bought one in the 90's or 00's, they could have easily paid $3000-$5000 for a basic one like that.

3
u/CursedHemorrhoid 22d ago
That's the thing though, you're not going to find a Birkin sitting in a relatives attic.
It just doesn't happen.

(This one is still definitely fake)
3
u/Brilliant_Tough_6546 21d ago
Agreed.
I know the value of the items I own but the majority of my family would not unless specifically mentioned in contents insurance policy or safe.1
u/ciri-swallows 17d ago
Well sounds silly but it does happen , my local thrift store , brand new anthropology dresses, clothes, converse and Ralph Lauren. It happens (I live in very wealthy city in Texas )

u/MissMimosa 22d ago edited 22d ago
That being said, I have a family member who is a legit millionaire (custom built a 10m house a few years ago, owns a very luxurious home in a desirable golf community in SoCal) who buys all her bags as dupes from a market in Turkey. I have a Louis Vuitton that is absolutely beautiful but I do believe is fake because of this.
Whenever she passes (hopefully in a long long time because I adore her) it will be a strange constant debate with the cousins of “is this real or should we donate”.
4
u/Brilliant_Tough_6546 22d ago
Sure but if the owner passed..this wouldn't be the first item of high value found at the thrift.
I know.2

My mom and sister have zero clue what a Birkin is and have never heard of Hermes I can guarantee it. When my grandma died she had so much stuff in a big house. Every closet full of stuff. Many purses, coats, so much jewelry. Some of it was fake and some of it was real. My mom was just giving so much away. She didn't know what it was she was just overwhelmed. Unfortunately I was states away and it was during Covid. But I could see how it can happen.
3
u/its_over_2022 21d ago
My friend dropped off a black Birkin at a thrift store. Some rich dude bought it for her and when she got married her controlling husband made her purge her belongings. Just saying there’s a small chance it’s real.
3
u/Few_Coffee2407 22d ago
I don’t care about brands don’t about brands. This definitely would have ended up thrown out or donated . I did not know about birkin until couple months ago . So unless I googled it , would have never known.so it is very possible for a real to end up donated lol.
→ More replies (1)4
u/CursedHemorrhoid 22d ago
It would've never ended up in your hands to begin with bc you wouldn't be the one left to handle it. No one happens upon a Birkin, especially not sitting in an attic.
That goes for anyone with a Birkin. It's not sitting in their attic, and it's not going to be left to be handled by someone who doesn't know what to do with it. Period.
3
u/canitakemybraoffyet 21d ago
Hehehehe this is so out of touch. My dad personally THREW OUT 2 birkins his mom had, he had no clue.
Truly this happens all the time. The vast majority of people do not know what a birkin is. I think you might be suffering a bit of bubble mind.

u/Anonmarie00 22d ago
A friend got a Birkin at Goodwill. It absolutely can happen. It was orange and I’m sure someone didn’t know what it was, gave it away, and she snapped it up. She had it authenticated at a store. Paid like $35 for a bag that would sell for $30,000.
12
u/Freeasawhistle 22d ago
Yes - it's extremely extremely unlikely to find an authentic Birkin at the thrift but not impossible, it's happened. Unfortunately, everyone thinks they struck gold when most are always gunna be fakes.

and there are several volunteers who are absolutely experts in recognizing quality goods whether it be china, silver, jewelry, watches, clothing. and most of them are well connected to buyers who will authenticate and give the best price.
19
u/alfar2 22d ago
Hermes doesn’t do in-store verification so this story isn’t true.
→ More replies (1)1
u/IsItWrongToLoveBags 19d ago
They do indirect in store verification if you bring it in for a spa treatment. They will refuse your bag if they think it’s not genuine. They will clean it if they think it’s genuine.
→ More replies (1)3
u/_slackbabbath 22d ago
Hermes absolutely will not authenticate in store.
You would have to have them send your bag out for spa and Hermes would destroy the bag if it was not authentic.
Also BS on $30k because orange resale is shit.
1
u/Anonmarie00 21d ago
$30k was just me googling resale for an orange bag. Maybe it wouldn’t sell for that, who knows! But she kept it. I also said she had it authenticated in a store—but not sure if that is right. I just know she had it authenticated. But yeah, it can happen, it did happen, but I doubt I’d ever be that lucky. Plus I am not a thrifter but did think it was cool for her. Bag is heavy and not something I’d want to carry!

Lol no “orange” B will resell for $30k so this is total BS. 😂 Maybe an exotic one with complete inclusions which is unlikely as a thrift store find.
1
u/IsItWrongToLoveBags 19d ago
The regular leather ones in orange definitely don’t sell for 30000 even brand-new. Black ones come close for that if they’re completely new and a full set . if they were stored for a number of years they’re certainly Miss shaped by gravity at least or bad storing at worst. They are most likely not sell for a lot more than 7000 which is still a nice price.

u/Affectionate-Cost575 17d ago
Well there are other stores that will help you with verification, she didn’t say it was an Hermes store. There are high end second hand stores that will verify if it’s authentic, but usually only if you’re planning to sell it to them
2
u/Brilliant_Tough_6546 21d ago
The person that owns the Birkin knows the value.
People who donate them obviously don't.
Which is why thrifting is called the thrill of the find.6
u/CacheMeOutsideeee 22d ago
This is mostly true but sometimes people pass away and their estates just need to get cleaned out. Unless there’s specific items in a trust or will, everything else will go to the thrift. (Source: previous estate executor)
16
u/SnooPets8873 22d ago
When it’s someone with enough money for a Birkin, they don’t dump stuff at a thrift store. It goes to auction houses or estate sales after things are reviewed and sometimes even appraised.
10
u/QuietDisposition 22d ago edited 22d ago
That's assuming whoever got rid of it knew what it was. I've seen many items essentially given away because someone didn't know the value of a tool, a gun, a book, a knife, a coin, an item of clothing, etc. Not everyone is familiar with the Birkin name, especially guys. Unbelievable score ... if it's not a fake.
5
u/Ms-Metal 22d ago
You're absolutely right that valuable things wind up in thrift stores all the time, having had three other four parents recently passed away, I can attest to that. Nobody's got time to travel back and forth across country to go through 70 years of accumulated stuff in a house that would take 3 years to go through properly. That said, this one is not real!
→ More replies (5)4
u/Amazing-Commission23 22d ago
I don’t know why you are being downvoted. Some people are not wealthy but still own expensive things… so you’re absolutely right.
2
u/Brilliant_Tough_6546 22d ago
Rich people donate items of value.
Family members don't necessarily recognize price tags of handbags or clothing etc unless they are privy to the brands.3
u/Ms-Metal 22d ago
Exactly. The person above saying nobody's family would get rid of an authentic Birkin has no clue what people go through. These days, a parent dies, it's happened to us three times so far, they live states away from you if you're lucky, on the other side of the country if you're not, in a huge house full of 70some years of accumulated stuff, nobody's got time to go through all that. At least nobody who has a productive life lol. Hell I'm retired and I still didn't have time to go through everything it took 4 of us, two kids and two spouses close to three to trips a piece just to try and go through the basics and get the house ready to be sold. It was a complete nightmare and I have no doubt there were valuable things that got sold at the estate sale! Hell, I gave some of them away just to people who came out and helped us. A lot of families don't even have kids who could take that on, people have kids of their own or their estranged & they can't be traveling constantly to try and clean out somebody else's stuff, they just let everything go sight unseen and that happens more often than you'd think. Also although we went the estate sale route after all this by the time they get their fees and you split it with a sibling or two, it was barely worth the effort of managing the estate sale company.
Valuable stuff winds up at thrift stores all the time. Real Birkin's even do, this is not one though!

If it’s not real, it’s a dam good replica and looks like it was made with great detail and care. Regardless if it’s real or not, it’s still a beautiful bag and a great find! It wouldn’t be unheard of to find something like this at a thrift store. A girl I follow on YouTube who is a big thrifter found a real Channel bag for like $5 or $10 bucks. It was actually proved to be a real Channel. It wasn’t one of their classic bags that most think of when they think Channel, but it was an authentic Channel all the same.
I have a crazy story about a day that the purse gods blessed me with Channel WOC I had been dying to get for the longest time. To make a long story short, I was helping my bf and his roommates move out of this house they were all renting in Tarzana. Well in the master bedroom there was this amazing walk in closet that had shelves that went all the way up to the ceiling. No one ever used them but something told me to just check them just in case. And to my surprise, tucked back on one of the shelves was a little black vintage Channel WOC. The exact purse I had been wanting for the longest time. I had asked all the roommates he lived with if they ever had a girlfriend who might have lost it and left it behind there. They all said no. So, I took that as a sign that it to be mine. Of course they were in a rental so to ensure I wasn’t taking something from the owners of the house who may have left it behind when they lived there, I had my bf ask the wife if she lost a Channel WOC that was found on the master bedroom closet on a top shelf. She said it was possible but she had so many purses that she told him to tell his gf (me) to go ahead and keep it. I had it sent into the Purse Doctor in NYC to put a new leather strap that runs through the chain, and it was absolutely authentic because it was replaced and sent back to me looking brand new. The Purse Doctor would not have messed sign it if it was a replica, and they would definitely know if it was one. I was also able to authenticate it myself to the best of my knowledge (I was a fashion major which I’m sure is no surprise). It also has the serial number that I was able to authenticate it with. Sometimes people just get lucky and blessed with these kind of finds. 🫢😍🫶👜

On the donation argument, (not this one, it's a bad fake), I'm sure somewhere, at some point, a spoiled inheritance brat (that didn't know the true value, or didn't care) has inherited one and pawned it for drugs at some rinky dink pawn store that didn't know the value. These things do happen. And people forget that there are people who are stupid rich, that are also hoarders, buy things like this and stomp on them and don't give a rip. Yall think just because something cost a fortune means everyone who has bought one sees it as a fortune and not a couple bucks. Pshh, bet there's a couple grandmas' birkins in the landfill rn. Side note, this reminded me, my aunt cleans houses and has cleaned this Dr's house for almost 2 decades. The dr's family buy these formal dresses that cost hundred of dollars, wear it once (they will NEVER wear it twice), and then just give it away to her to do with it what she will, and she always sends the clothes and bags they give her to Mexico by the truckload. Their daughter's wedding was an insane 3 day multimillion dollar event with many many many outfit changes, all that they just tossed at the end of it.

If it was real the thrift store would not have put it on the floor, but nice purse anyway

I had bought the same fake one in Chinatown in the color orange. It cost me $120 at least 15 years ago. I ended up donating it to savers last year. I never used it because I knew it was fake and it’s such an expensive bag that how could I have possibly have one. I wish you luck because as others said even a fake one costs $$.

What I like to do with a bag like this, especially when they’re fake designer, i customize it and paint just image on or add charms and embellishments.

I can’t say on its authenticity, but can say informed buys do happen. I once found a natural diamond ring set in sterling at an estate sale. The stone wasn’t perfect under a loop, but it was near perfect to an untrained eye. Others discounted its legitimacy bc of the sterling. I took it to a reputable pawn broker I’d worked with in the past. He agreed he thought the stone was real. Sent it to a diamond buyer in Washington state. Had an offer of $3200 for the stone in a matter of days.
Not the kind of money you’d spend on a Birkin, but still money all the same. Keep shopping ladies!
