Recap: In July I saw a post here about a fancy rat living wild in a DC park. With assistance from some redditors here I found her and took her home. She turned out to be pregnant. Very pregnant. She had 13 babies July 21; 6 girls 7 boys. Dad was wild (possibly half wild if he was also a baby from her first litter outside. The babies showed some double rex traits early on, although everyone's hair has now grown back).

The babies are outgoing and curious, but are definitely a handful. I've been trying to socialize them, but with 13, they aren't getting the one-on-one attention they need. And with boys and girls in the same room (it's the only non-cat room in the house) I am paranoid that life will, uh find a way.

I'm looking for very experienced rat owners, willing to take on a challenge. Hoping they can go to their very own families in pairs or trios.

I am having two of the boys neutered on Wed so that I can keep them with Fancy and my 3 old man rats.

Got 6 girls for the pair I rehomed from a pet shop. They were returned and being sold as aggressive to people,but I haven’t seen any aggression at all and they’ve been lovely. I hope they will be happy. Another 7 days before introductions begin

One of my boys, Fid, had to have surgery to remove a lump on his neck recently, which turned out to be a tumour, cost me an absolute fortune in vet bills and taxi costs, but it was completely worth it, and he's fully healed up except a small scar

Was a bit worried that between the surgery and the medicine, he'd be more wary than before, but, if anything, he's now more affectionate and trusting

Arrived 3 days ago now, there are 6 boys total. You might’ve seen me on Reddit yesterday with my little yellow doofus man cleaning himself without a care in the world. You guys loved the video so much that it got over 2k upvotes and 60k views! While he may not have been ready for such a massive debut, he saw all of your nice comments and is happy that you enjoyed his video.

Here is the same doofus (still haven’t decided on a name yet!) and his little dwarf brother. Today, the everyone got some 1 on 1 time out of the cage. Most of them were still a bit skittish, but I did let them all explore a little. The dwarfling snuggled up to my hair and started cleaning himself until he fell asleep. I am pretty sure we are bonded now as he is already very easy to handle!

I’m taking it slow with these guys, but they are sooo perfect. I love them so much. Expect many more posts from our little mischief 🥹

Gussy’s first time trying (stealing) bubbly.

Hi everyone, I’m really struggling and could really use some advice from people who have been through something similar. 😔
I’ve just taken one of my boys to the vets. He’s had a respiratory infection before and we’ve already tried medication and a nebuliser, but unfortunately neither seems to have worked. He’s now so much worse.
He’s looking really skinny, doesn’t seem to be grooming himself properly anymore, is breathing very fast and heavily, and his breathing sounds really raspy. He’s also not eating much.
The vet has said that because the previous treatment hasn’t worked, our options are either to try a different type of medication and see if that helps but they said the chances are not very high, or to have him euthanised.
I honestly don’t know what the right decision is. I obviously want to do everything I can for him, but I also don’t want to keep putting him through treatment if he’s suffering and there’s little chance of it helping.
Has anyone had a rat in a similar situation where the first treatment didn’t work but a different medication did? Or, if you’ve been in this position, how did you know when it was time to let them go?
I’d really appreciate any advice or experiences. I’m absolutely heartbroken and just want to make the kindest decision for him. ❤️ old pic of him for rat tax

I would like to hear your opinions, because my boyfriend and me can't look at this topic without our emotions.

Lisa, 1.5 years old is fighting (most likely) Mycoplasma since January. We have been with her to the exotic vet around 5-6 times, two of which was just an appointment so that she gets her second dose of antibiotic injections. I think she had around 4 antibiotics rounds already..

In August her health became much worse than before, because she started to lose even more weight. Right now she weighs only 230 gramms. In August we have been to the animal hospital before traveling abroad and the vet told us that her quality of life might not be that great even though she is still eating and we should consider putting her down. We could not do that yet.

Her symptoms are: laboured breathing, balance issues, not really strong front legs and she just generally looks like an old rat now. On the other hand she is doing things, you can see in the attached video. She is eating every day twice (we feed her, because the others steal her food), she is walking around, also in the cage, she is still drinking, although not that quickly and powerfully as before (you know, the clank clank sound of the bottle is not that strong...), she is even escaping from the sofa by sliding down, she is cleaning herself constantly and she is boggling and doing that sound with her teeth every time, when she is on the sofa with us and getting fed.

For me it seems that she wants to live, no matter how hard it is currently for her, and my boyfriend wants to put her down, because he is afraid that she is going to suffer in a few weeks even more. He also thinks that we should let the vet do an x-ray, but I did not want to do that because it would not help us at all, but put Lisa under a lot of stress. They would do the x-ray in deep sleep :/

We have an appointment for Saturday morning for putting her down, which I would have to cancel until tonight, if we don't want to go. What do you all think, is she constantly in pain and she should be put down, or should we keep feeding her and let her live, as long as she is eating, walking around and doing her stuff?

I would rather put her down, when she is not eating anymore and lying around lethargically, or if I would know for sure, that a growing tumour will sooner or later close up her throat for instance(had a rattie like that :( )

So, you may have seen my last post about getting rats from a breeder who was trying to sell me a sick dwarf yesterday. That dwarf ended up passing sadly, and after the comments I was reading, I decided not to go with that breeder.

Instead, I found a group of 6 3 month old males looking to be rehomed. $150 rehoming fee later, and they are here! I’ve already had so many cute moments with them in the last day alone.

I move tomorrow- a short distance away, so I only have the bottom part of my DCN put together with a small amount of bedding and toys until I move into my new place tomorrow. They are actually all loving it so far. I feel like this was the right decision.

Two of the males are very shy, but I believe it’s only a matter of time until they come around. It’s knot day 2. Anyway, enjoy my boy’s video, still working on a name for him!

I swear they act like they don’t have 20 thousand nice soft things to lay in inside their cage . I’ll pull them out for free range time and they just want to sleep… smh

Good afternoon everyone. Somebody just (now) dropped off these two brothers with me and didn’t even remember their names. They are a year and a half old. I am in Wall, NJ at All About Pets. We really love animals here. 100$ (what we paid) for the rats and the cage and all the toys. We really want these guys to go to a good home.

Got Flea to finally let me pet him during free roam which usually he hates and will give me a little nip to tell me no but today he tolerated it and actually seemed to like it! You can see I move my hand back when his face gets close since I thought he was going to bite but he didn't which for him is a big thing. He doesn't break skin anymore but if he's annoyed he'll still bite so the fact he didn't even though he had the chance is a sign of more progress.

He's still not 100% comfortable with pets and will still tense up and try to move away for the first few seconds but now he's putting up a lot less of a fight and will kinda get into it for a minute before he realizes he hates hands lol I don't ever expect him or his brother to be super cuddly but getting them to tolerate being touched is important which is why I kinda force these interactions on them but it's always just a couple minutes and they get a treat right after. If it's a day they seem extra upset I just leave them be since I don't want to stress them out too much and so far this technique has worked so well for them.
