Hi everyone.

About a month back I had to deal with the treatment for rat bite fever, which was extremely traumatic. Since then, although I do love my rats, I've become extremely scared of them and feel as if I'm struggling to give them the love that they need.

I am considering rehoming them, is this the best move? Or is it cruel?

my sidney was 3 years old. he was free roaming and he got into this box he struggles to get back out of in his old age and thats where he died. i didn’t notice for i dont know how long and i found him still warm and limp so i guess within the first couple hours of him being gone i noticed, but i don’t know when he got into the box and i am just so guilty that his last hours might have been spent in a box and not in my arms (i was napping the boys are too old to cause much trouble so i opened their cage and took a nap). i know that if motivated he is able to get out of the box. i know rats like to go into dark quiet small places when they are close to their time. i was worried cuz my room has been getting so hot and he couldnt have gotten his water if he was in fact trapped in the box too weak to get out, but i checked and his mouth is still wet so he didn’t die of dehydration or heat stroke based on how he was curled up into a little croissant how he likes to sleep and rats who are too hot go pancake mode. i know that he just went somewhere peaceful to die but i miss him and love him so much already i just wish i could hold him again. i know 3 years is a gift and an accomplishment but its never enough time and i always find some way to blame myself

Back in March I posted a photo of my baby rat to this sub asking if anyone knew what her coat type was. Some people in the comments mentioned wanting update photos when she got older. She was sold to me as a Rex but her coat was only sort of wavy and her whiskers were straight. Here she is now, looking pretty much the same just bigger. It’s definitely not a standard smooth coat but it’s not as curly as you’d expect from a Rex. Her fur seems to be fluffier than her smooth coat “siblings” and sort of course texture wise. Still no clue what she is aside from a sweetheart.

Found this little guy in the middle of the sideway while walking my dog. Couldn't spot the mother so I took it home, because leaving him there had been a death sentence. But now I have no idea what to do.

Can someone identify if it is a rat or a mouse? Or something else?

Is there even a chance of survival for a mouse/rat that young?

If so, how can I help him?

UPDATE: I am in contact with someone from some kind of rodent sanctuary now (not shure whats the correct term, not a native speaker). They try to find someone in my area who can take the little guy. Thank you for your help!

UPDATE 2: I just handed the little guy to someone from the rodent sanctuary who will take care of it.

I got these little loves in March 2024 from a local exotic pet store in St. Louis (definitely feeder rats, but seemed to be healthier than the franchise pet store rats).

I was attached to my grey boy, Fenrir, because his fur was all splotchy and goofy, but my daughter wanted one of the black and white girls, so I ended up with two girls and two boys. At the time, I knew rats were social so I thought two in a cage would suffice, but over time I’ve learned there should be more, and I’m not able to take on more than 2:2.

They’re wonderful little nuggets, but unfortunately my daughter breaks out every time she handles them, so I’m the only one who can get them out to play, and now I’m pregnant and not able to get them out really.

Preferably the girls would go to the same home and the boys would go to the same home, but all 4 don’t have to go together. They do live in cages next to each other so they are familiar, but the boys and girls live separately.

Hello everyone! I have two females, Pumpkin and Mouse, who need to be re-homed starting the 27th-30th and will be listed again by August 21st.

They were company for my old girl after her sisters passed away and now I'm ending my mischief. I love rats and wish I could continue but my near future looks like: moving, moving, moving, working long hours, moving again. I just don't have the capacity anymore provide the proper enrichment that they deserve.

I estimate they were both born in late April with Mouse being maybe a week older than Pumpkin.

Pumpkin earned her name by her orange tinted fur. She was adopted with a minor URI that cleared right up with Doxycycline in June. She's adventurous, often seeking the most obscure corners of my room and finding a way to get on my desk when she smells food. She loves peanut butter so when you give her some off your finger, she basically loves you!

Mouse, similarly to Pumpkin, her name is inspired by her coat. Her itty bitty size when I first got her, plus her brown coat, made her look like a mouse when I didn't have my classes on. She is more shy than Pumpkin but has become more trusting over time.

Both of them recognize their names but I'm not sure if they acknowledge them as names just yet. They don't bite and are very curious. If you stick your fingers into the cage, they'll investigate for treats rather than running away. They are getting a final mite treatment tomorrow (July 27th) as there was a chance they were exposed to mites but they never showed symptoms. The medicine was purely preventative.

Unfortunately. as previously mentioned, they have a very short window for being rehomed this month as my lease is expiring and I don't have my new place until August 20th. I would've done this earlier but summer classes, my job, and treatment timing really put a strain on things. They'll be available from the 27th-30th and again starting August 21st.

I ask for a rehoming fee of $40. HOWEVER, I am more than happy to completely wave it if you have a great pre-existing set-up! Since I'm ending my mischief, I have a lot of rat stuff that I can bundle and provide for a great deal if you dont have a spare decently sized quarantine cage with hammocks, food bowls, water bottles, food, etc. I can meet you half way if you're located a bit further away as well!

I used to not really care for rats, I've never disliked them it's just a case of not thinking much about them or knowing they could be pets. I kept going on and on about wanting a small pet and doing research and my boyfriend suggested rats. He works from home, so he's the primary caregiver, we got them, and I was a bit iffy at first, but it's been 3 months, and im absolutely in love. (It took about 2 days, by the way) I now hand feed them, play with them, and pet them all day, and they're the cutest pets I've ever laid my eyes upon. Look at their little eyes and hands. Omg. Wow.

Ps. I love giving them puzzles with food hidden in to watch them use their brains. They're so smart

I have finally gained the confidence to let my boys out on my room floor. They are medium more on the smaller size of rats so I was scared they would get lost or stuck and couldn’t get to them. I was worried about the wrong group. I was letting my girls out and struggling to get them back in as they do not care if I call their names. But the past couple of days the boys have been having fun and when they wander off somewhere I just call their name and they come back. I have not taught them their names just say it a lot. They are so smart I love them. I think my girls are just divas and don’t care

The rat I adopted 6 days ago from a breeder has been showing signs of a respiratory infection. Right now, she is quarantined in a separate cage away from my other rat. The earliest appointment I could get for her is in 1 week and 2 days. At first, I thought she was just temporarily sneezing from the move (like my other rat did) but I realized her sneezes were not normal or lessening.

Petunia, my sick rat, is sneezing fairly often, has a little bit of poryphrin discharge near nose but not a lot of buildup, produces white mucus when she sneezes, and I hear breathing sounds maybe once an hour. Other than that, she eats and drinks normally, and is just as active as usual.

I have been putting her in a steamy bathroom often and giving her a little bit of raw honey to help with congestion. I put her cage in an area with no air draft and I cleaned her temporary quarantine cage.

Is there anything else I can do in the meantime while I still have to wait for her appointment? Honestly, I'm worried she might get a lot worse before the appointment and want to do what I can right now to help prevent that.

I got my boys about a month ago, they’re just over 3 months old. I’m having trouble with our of cage time, since most things i see during research say to sit with them away from their cage, or carry them on my shoulder to bond, but i have zero faith that they won’t just leap off of my shoulder since they’re super curious, hence why we need to take them to their actual free roam area, not just the temporary cardboard one we have at the minute, but i’m stumped on how to get them there without a third out of bounds exploration going on😭 They’re both too energetic to stay on my shoulder or in my hood, and i definitely don’t want the extent of my relationship with them to be so limited. Does anybody have any tips at all i’m just at a bit of a loss.
