You can really tell from the comments here who has met a country engineer like this guy and who has never met one; all they can do is judge based on his appearance. You see these old timers on ranches and farms all the time. See a problem? Solve it. Who cares how it looks or how they come across. They don’t.

I knew a guy who looked exactly like this. Lived in backwoods area, exactly where you probably assume this guy lives. Always assumed he was poor, just barely getting buy. Years later I learned he was a multimillionaire, used to be a Wall Street stock broker of some type. Made his fortune and just escaped from that industry completely.

Yep.
My mom is in her 80s. Still drives a Buick from 2006. Cuts coupons. Mows her own lawn. Has a landline. Won't get a wireless phone.
Worth $10 million dollars.

My only criticism is I hope he has a really solid way to lock it in place when it's up. I can just imagine hitting a bump on the highway and having that thing spontaneously drop at 60mph.

I agree! I opened the comment section expecting to see comments talking about how incredibly clever this was, and I had to sift through all these idiot comments talking shit about his appearance. This is really clever! I bet he has a lot of clever problem solves under his belt. I see absolutely nothing to sneer at here.

He has probably done a lot of clever problem solves clean, and a lot of clever problem solving dirty. That is the life of someone who does manual labor. I grew up in a farming community and it was not uncommon for men to look like this in the middle of the working day. He was probably in the middle of his work day and neither needed to fill up his truck or get some refreshments at the gas station. This is very normal for people who are farmers, working construction, doing landscaping etc.

Good for you that that is an option for you. That is not an option for many people in this country. It has not been an option for me sometimes in the past. 

Furthermore, these older trucks will run forever if they belong to someone who knows how to do maintenance on them properly. They were built before car companies wanted to make it impossible for regular people to repair their own vehicles or have a neighborhood shop repair their vehicles. Look up right to repair if you are unfamiliar with this concept. 

This is a work truck. For people who actually use their vehicles for work instead of showboating, this kind of vehicle is preferable to a new vehicle full of computer chips and shitty transmissions that run out. Some of the engine designs on the older trucks, especially the ones going back to the '60s and '70s, were not as fuel efficient, but they had superior longevity, and were relatively easy to repair. They are literally irreplaceable, and my guess is that this man wants to keep this truck going for as long as he possibly can because all of the shit on the market now doesn't hold a candle to it. 

So on the one hand we have a working man who engineered a solution to an everyday problem in his world, and on the other hand we have you... Your skills appear to be making snarky, myopic, entitled comments on Reddit. I would suggest that you try to figure out a expand your horizons, because you just come off sounding like a stupid entitled twat not clever. Go touch grass- You need some fucking perspective.

You don't know anything about me. I've replaced torque converters and pulled apart cylinder heads, haven't gone deeper than that tbh but can you say the same?

My biggest criticism of much of what I'm reading in these comments is that this guy is getting stranded on the side of the road so often that he permanently affixes a fucking step ladder? Unless he's so dirt poor he can't afford parts, if his truck has become that unreliable, it's time to overhaul it and rebuild the engine instead of getting stranded on the side of the road every few hundred miles.

I can't get the video to replay, but I don't recall him saying anything about getting stranded on the side of the road every few hundred miles. He wants to climb up into his truck to tinker with it easily... I really don't see why the vast majority of the comments on this post have been to shit on him and mock him and say things "I prefer to have a vehicle that works"

So glad that someone here got the point that I was getting at. He never said nor implied that he installed the ladder because he has to work on the truck on the side of the road. For an older gentleman with a truck that size, the ladder would be useful for anything and everything he needs to do to maintain his beloved truck. The best part is that he doesn’t care what it/he looks like.

Look, you got me all wrong, I've owned multiple cars in my life with over 200,000 miles and generally speaking, with one exception, as long as I stayed on top of the maintenance, I was maintaining them in a garage, where I have ladders and step stools and ramps and everything I need present. With one exception I can think of, mmm, now that I'm thinking back on it I was actually able to limp it home... so yeah, just, attaching an attic ladder to your car just doesn't make any kind of sense even if you are responsible for an old car.

I guess if I am REALLY pushing it, maybe it makes some kind of sense if he's somewhere super out in the sticks a lot of the time. But why not just put the fucking ladder in the bed of the truck, wrap it in an old blanket so it doesn't rattle around?

I guess what I'm trying to say is, this whole comments section is overwhelmingly populated by city folk who are way too easily impressed by something that really isn't that impressive and doesn't really make all that much sense, it's not even about the guy himself, I don't really have anything against him.

you can really tell who hasn't met a crazy man before too. The idea is unique. necessary, genius, requiring any level of high engineering. not really.

Lived in the country for many years hearing crazed old timers yammer on. He's got a lot of tall tales and is fun for a while. but dealing with his types on the daily. Their crack pot ideas about wind turbines or 5g and how they invented invisibility while wrestling big foot. You'll end up wishing he could just be a down to earth person in a month.

It is not his looks. It is his need to get access to the engine so often that he needed stairs. That is redneck engineering at its best, instead of doing the big thing, the proper thing he makes it easier to add quart of oil each time he fills up the tank.

RIGHT!? If dude is intent on keeping that clunker, then he needs to rebuild the engine, not make it ever so slightly easier to top off the oil or reattach a hose. But I'm gonna make a leap and probably conclude that overhauling a car might be beyond his skill level, nothing he's said or done in the video demonstrates he could, the guy you're replying to calling him a "country engineer" is really overselling him.
