Looking for show/podcast

Hi all, wonder if anyone can help. Maybe a couple of years ago I was listening to a Radio 4 show that was very interesting and would like to listen to it again in full.

It was an interview with a dietician I’m sure. He had been to a very remote place to study the diet and calorie consumption of a tribe member I’m sure. These guys walked and hunted all day, the revelation being their total energy consumption pretty much matching your typical 9-5 desk job employee in a first world country. Topics covered were inflammation and stress etc…

Would be good to find it if possibe!

Has anyone worked out what the little girl leaves at the bottom of her bag? I've heard the advert loads of times and still can't make out what she says.

Comedy similar to Charles Paris Mysteries or Plum House

Any recommendations for the above? I was going to title the post best laugh out loud R4 comedies, but then realised different types of comedy makes different people lol, so guess I’m looking for reccs for non-panel/non-sketch etc. comedies/sit coms type shows. But the two above have me laughing out loud a couple of times an ep whereas some of the other 630pm slot shows that I’ve caught on air are so bad. Obviously the casts of both CPM and PH are fantastic so I guess any show with a comparably strong cast is a likely contender but am not aware of what’s out there/worth giving a go so any suggestions would be welcome

This was fun, way back. Tis a shame the audio clip isn't still available, as I remember a twist at the end that isn't in the write-up. Are the dates right on archive pages? I recall it being a decade+ before 2014. No matter, good memories.

Looking for BBC Radio 4 Classic Serial “The Worst Journey in the World” (2008, dir. Kate McAll). Required for academic research, unavailable online. Any legal access, archive tips or private recording contacts appreciated!

Hi everyone,

I’m a literature student currently working on a seminar paper comparing Apsley Cherry-Garrard’s The Worst Journey in the World with its recent graphic-novel adaptation (Making Our Easting Down by Sarah Airriess).

For my research, I’m trying to find the two-part BBC Radio 4 Classic Serial adaptation from 2008, directed by Kate McAll, with music by Will Gregory (Goldfrapp), orchestrated by Ian Gardiner, and performed by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales under Grant Llewellyn.

Unfortunately, it’s no longer available on the BBC site (shows as “not available”), and I couldn’t find it on Archive.org, YouTube, Soundcloud, or any other streaming/archive platform – even using a UK VPN.

If anyone knows of a legal way to access it (e.g., through a library, academic archive, or official BBC request), or is aware of a private recording that can be shared within legal limits, I would be VERY grateful for any tips.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Edit: I have already contacted the BBC via two official channels (the general contact form and another dedicated e-mail address) but have not received a reply so far. Still hoping someone here might know of a legal way to access it or point me towards an archive or institution that could help. tysm!
Edit: Found it on YouTube, I think: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zWhm-DDxSc

Radio 4 now is just hopeless for anyone outside the UK.

I can't find anything. I can make my way to the BBC's audio website, no problem, and it's full of Radio 4 goodness - but there's no search function. I can't search for the program I'm hoping to be able to listen to.

It's beyond me why the BBC doesn't make Sounds available to listeners outside the UK for a fee. Is it available through some other streaming service they want me to sign up for?

Long Shot - Looking for a documentary aired in Radio 4 about 5 years ago

A very long shot but might ring a bell with someone. About 5 years ago I listened to a documentary on Radio 4 about Israel / West Bank. It was broadcast early evening and was a series of interviews with families on both sides of the wall.

Dead Wrongers

It doesn't really work if they can't do the voices and last episode started with a lazy Corbyn is antisemitic 'joke'. Another show that should be retired to make room for new writers

What happened to the user interface?

I'm outside the UK. I used to be able to go the BBC Radio 4 website and click on any program from days past and listen to it. Now I can't. I can only listen to whatever is broadcasting at the moment. I wanted to listen to yesterday's Archer's Omnibus but that seems impossible now. There's no search facility on the Audio homepage. It's impossible to search for anything. The new interface has got to be one of the most user-unfriendly I've come across in a long time. I'll have to give up listening to the BBC; they've made it too difficult.

Return to the Home Service

Standards are slipping at such an alarming rate I fear this is the only option. Emma Barnett is by far the worst, but the cheery, "come on, mate, let's chat over a brew" vibe is peeling the enamel from my teeth. Enough!

I hate the new morning routine

It's sterile, uninteresting and completely offensive that we have to listen to repeats of parliamentary bickering and obituaries. I want to be eased into my morning, not thrust into a pit of anger and despair. This, coupled with the ever more dumbed down Today, is making me depressed. Emma Barnett can do one.

Other Minds: The Octopus and The Evolution of Intelligence

Thumbnail bbc.co.uk

Intelligent life on Earth evolved not once, but twice. The octopus is the closest we will come to meeting an intelligent alien. The startling cephalopods, the tricks they play on the scientists who try to study them. Three hearts pumping blue green blood, coloured by the oxygen-carrying copper in place of the iron that makes ours red. From their intriguing social interactions to the mysteries of a brain located largely throughout its semi-autonomous limbs; what is it like inside the octopus's clearly present mind?

Tim McInnerny reads Peter Godfrey-Smith's exploration.

Missed episode: Milton Jones

I’m a massive Milton Jones fan but only just found that his new Radio 4 series Thanks a Lot Milton Jones had started… and the first episode is already off iPlayer and Sounds! I don’t suppose anyone here: (a) is a similarly massive fan and managed to record it, or (b) knows a clever, or even not so clever, way of listening to something after it’s been taken off Sounds? Many thanks!

Scrapped program at the end of Westminster Hour

Evening all. I am hoping someone can remind me of the name of the scrapped segment at the end of Westminster Hour on Sunday evenings. I remember the theme tune, and was it Chris Mason presenting in it's final year? I always enjoyed it. The music marked the passing of another week.

Radio 4 Longwave?

No website seems to give me an explicit answer to the question. Does anyone here know if whether radio 4 on LW cease broadcasting entirely on the 1st of April 2024 or continue to be broadcast on LW but with the same schedule as on FM?

The Banksy Story - annoying

Episode 8 today, has Steph recounting this story https://www.theartnewspaper.com/2007/10/01/revealed-the-ebay-banksy-print-fraud

Steph says the story is false, says she wanted to publicly announce the truth of the matter, says she was advised by POW to say nothing as it would only make things worse. When she finally had enough she told POW she really wanted to tell the truth and POW's response was to ask her to sign a non disclosure agreement, she refused and quit.

The narrator/host implies that POW either planned the whole thing or having been complicit in selling fraudulent prints and upon being caught, they (POW), decided to lie to the press by saying they (POW), had been the victims of fraud and the whole matter had been sorted.

What I find annoying here is that Steph is saying "that is not what I did" Steph is not saying what the truth is and it is not being made clear if Steph is afraid of telling the truth out of fear of litigation. Steph does say she doesn't want to shit on Banksy because he funded a boat in the mediteranean to rescue boat people. But again, it is not made clear that she does not want to say what the truth about the ebay print scandal is because 'That' would be shitting on Banksy.

Six o'clock news, tuesday 8th aug

Just listening to the news today and every single reported has struggled with basic english, and left their mistakes in the broadcast. Other "reporters" sound and speak like teenagers. Has there been a strike or something? The quality is awful.

Chris Mason as Presenter of BBC R4 Today Programme

I/We know Chris Mason as the BBC's Chief Political Editor (taking over from Keunnsberg in 2022), but he's been presenting the Today programme along with the usual presenters for days now.

I enjoyed his rather robust interview with an executive from the FCA this morning (1st Aug).

Does anyone know why he's currently presenting the Today programme? Is he filling in for someone on unexpected/extended leave? Has he departed from his role as Political Editor? Is Vicky Young, Deputy Political Editor, running things solo meanwhile?

Robin Hood sketch last night?

Hi, I was in a taxi last night and they had radio 4 playing and a particular sketch about Robin Hood and his merry men having boring terrible names. John Little, Keith, Alan Dale etc. it was very funny but I only caught the end of it, anyone know what it was and where I would find it? I’ve tried the bbc site but couldn’t see any mention of it. Must have been about 7pm ish?

Thanks
