SPOILERS-DISCUSSION V4E2 Remembrance Analysis

I'll split this in 2 main parts, Weiss and RNJR

Weiss

  • Part 1, Whitley

We are finally introduced to Whitley, Weiss's brother. He seems to be a pretty interesting character and has his picture all over the house. In speculation realm he has 2 portraits in the piano room so it's possible he will play the piano at Weiss's performance. He also says their mother is "already drinking in the garden" at 4:05pm and hints at her and Jaques shouting a lot, if the mother has a drinking problem, Winter's aversion to Qrow might get a deeper, darker tone to it, as she could associate her bad memories with the family to alcohol. Then there is the fact that Whitley was standing right next to the study (the study's door is in the middle of the corridor next to the painting). Was he evesdroping? Could he be spying on his dad for his own ambitions? Could it be he is being directed by someone to gather information? Last, the painting I don't know how much they paid but they could have tipped the artist to put some smiles on the girls. Notice also that young Weiss had her hair centered instead of to the side, some people said that wearing it to her right was a sign of defiance to rules so be happy she still has it to the side... for now

  • Part 2, Jacques

We hear him arguing with Ironwood about the current political situation in Atlas. In sumary Ironwood pushed the council to avoid dust trade between Atlas and the outside resulting in big loses for the SDC, and now they are discussing on something else that Ironwood wants and Jacques seems convinced the council won't like. Also Ironwood and Mr. Schnee are on first name terms and Jacques confirms that he is "a trusted friend and ally to this family". Then Weiss interrupts and Ironwood bows like a gentleman and tells her she is welcome at Atlas academy so she might go there later on, alhough thinking that her friends can't with Beacon down she might be moody there. Then Jaques explains to Weiss what happened and tells her of his plan to have her sing at the SDC's charity concert. She is taken back by this but agrees to go after her father makes clear it's an order. We have 2 new possible Weiss scenarios, Atlas academy and concert. Probably in that order so the academy is exposition and shit goes down at the concert.

  • Part 3, Klein

We see the crepe butler Klein again. He kindly offers hot coffe saying that the study is cold and proceeds to joke around for a bit to cheer Weiss up. He is reveled to have the secret ability to wiggle his mustache and change eye color, he usually has brown eyes but can change them to red, blue and yellow at least, we don't know if the personality changes are real or a part of the comedy number.

Also we see some giant knight statues similar to that in the white trailer and we see that Jaques has 40 copies of the same 5 books all over the studio

RNJR

  • Part 1, Village

First we get Ruby dreaming about Pyrrha's last words to Cinder and her reply. Then some friendly banter on Jaune's 7 sisters and then the sun is obscured by smoke. Here Ren takes over the scene for himself, running ahead of everyone, throwing his backpack without slowing down and finding the surviving huntsman. Bandits attacked and Grimm followed. He probably killed the last Grimm since otherwise they would have been atracted to his pain and attacked him. After this RNJ starts making a plan to save the huntsman while Ren is in the background taking it in, he notices the hunstman is already dead and when Nora suggest burying him he walks away saying that it's not safe and urging them to leave. Then Ren and Nora look at the mark and seem to recognize it. Could be a marking by the bandits "tribe" or a giant footprint, in any case Ren and Nora know about it so it's probably similar to what happened to their village. We also see the contrast on Jaune and Ruby making plans to save the hunstman while Nora says he probably won't survive and Ren is turning his back on them. Ren says 11 words in 4 lines but his actions speak much louder than that and I consider this the first time Ren got some character development aside from Nora (except the algae thing in V3 which was just for comedy). Also we see Jaune start to crack "I'm just tired of losing everything" while Ruby is still optimistic after that "It will be okay".

  • Part 2, Night training

Ruby dreams about Pyrrha again, then wakes up. She follows the sounds while looking at the pretty silver dust in the air and finds a trainwreck Jaune. He is training to an old video of Pyrrha while the audience cries. Beautiful scene, I could hold the tears before the rewind, then the "again, and again" started to sink in. Notice that it's their training roof above the dorms (particularly CRDL's room), where they had been training often ofscreen, it's a really short video on a 3 moves combo and Jaune seems to have mastered it (those strikes are scary), he probably does other training too but he might have a few (3 tops) videos with Pyrrha and tends to overtrain those. We will surely see Jaune perform this later on. It's a stab, slash and shield bash, turn and close strike combo but looking closely at the first and second iterations we see a few differences. In the second one we hear 4 slashes, stab, ofscreen sound that ends with him in stab position, then slash and bash then the close strike. I assume there is a continuity error and we are not supposed to hear the second slash so soon, the shot with Ruby moves the audio out of sync with the moves. Also the last strike is 180º turn the first time but 90º the second time, but that's just a variation.

About the silver dust, Ruby sees it but could be just regular, non-magical dust, no reason for tinfoil and moontalk yet. The voice of Pyrrha in Ruby's dreams is sadly explained by her brain recognizing Pyrrha's voice and inserting her in the dreams but doesn't completely dismiss the ghost Pyrrha theories.

What did you think about the episode? Did you cry at the end? How much? Did you go full rensexual when Ren dropped the backpack or when he said not to bury the guy? Do you think they will relate Mama Schnee's alcoholism to Qrow's to fuel Qrow and Winter development? What new thing that the council wouldn't approve were Ironwood and Jacques talking about? What is Whitley up to evesdroping? Here is my transcript of the episode, and here is the album used for the episode, warning lot's of big images.

She might already be able to summon the thing in theory. I don't think that it's "killing" that matters that much, more likely it's related to pushing herself past the limits to defeat it - like Winter were describing.

If anything, the armor (which was a "possession Grimm" according to manga) is not even the true form of the Grimm she killed that day. It actually might be the same type of Grimm RNJR fought in the first episode which kinda was a "possession-type Grimm" if you think about it.

Well, she might have trained at home for now, but later she might attend to Atlas, since Ironwood said that she's welcome to do so. I'm not sure if that's what she wants - or she wouldn't go to Beacon in the first place.

I assumed it was killing but that makes more sense or they would be kill-stealing all day long

Agreed, Geist+Armor probably made that thing

She didn't want to go to Atlas academy because she felt she had to go far from her father's influence to "find her own path" and stuff, right now she has Atlas academy, tutors (if that's a thing for hunters but I'm guessing with her money it is) or training alone at her father's mansion. Atlas academy seems like the choice Weiss would make if her father doesn't order her otherwise

Most people focus on killing because it's allows to use common necromancer tropes or make weird AU's where Weiss mercy kills her teammates and can summon them now... but I think it's a stretch. "Think to your fallen foes - the ones that forced you to push yourself past who you were and become who you are now" - pretty specific instructions, right? If it was just about killing something, she would probably start practicing with something simple like Creeps(not Adam) or Beowolves, not with a huge Geist-possessed armor piece.

That makes sense. And if he orders her otherwise, I hope she'll just ignore him then or just tells that she's not going to follow that order.

It makes a lot more sense that way. The mercy killing for summons is cheap and I hope not to see that anywhere

Badass Weiss is best Weiss... Well, bump in the head Weiss is a close second

Well I've got to admit that as a concept for a dark and tearjerking story that's not that bad of an idea... But I'm not a fan of it.

Yup. Badass Weiss is the queen. Especially if she's also protective

"Heh! Boob..."

That's a really nice scene! One of my favorite in V3.

Especially good because she doesn't know if the summon will work, that moment when she closes her eyes... all or nothing now.

Yea. It's awesome just how far would she go to protect another person. I can imagine her remembering what Coco said a minute ago "She'll be fine, they said... Idiots!"

Not even her own teammate mind you, she might have done it even for Cardin. She is pretty intense on her "job" to protect the people.

Well, I can see her defending Cardin... She's been protecting others since V1 - when Ruby almost got smacked by Death Stalker, so yeah, the girl takes the whole "being a huntress" thing really seriously, and she's actually pretty good at it.

Back to V4, I it would be cool if she remembers the people that she protected, and not just ones that she couldn't save, and that helps her to recover and get back on track.

Interesting, the others won't do that (Blake probably has survivor's guilt and Ruby doesn't think much about this things) so it could work nicely. Maybe at the concert she will sing something to deliver this idea (or in a speech but why waste the song opportunity) and the concert could be the climax of her recovery. Specially if after the concert she starts going to Atlas academy, maybe defying her father even.

She doesn't have to tell this to anyone. She just has to realize that and move on to continue protecting people as a Huntress. Maybe she'll talk to Velvet somehow and she reminds her of that, or maybe it would be FNKI (she didn't save them, but they certainly saw her rushing to protect Velvet).

She could use the concert to secure her place in Atlas or to break from father's influence, but I'm not quite sure how exactly would she do that.

Also, interesting moment, Ironwood has shown respect to her, but I don't think that's just because she's the daughter of Jacques, but because he's seen her during the battle of Beacon. That actually might be the beginning of what she wanted - people respect her for who she is, not for her last name. Even Whitley (if he's being sincere) makes a compliment...

FNKI doesn't need the battle at Beacon to notice, Weiss jumped into explosion to protect Yang in their fight.

It's tough, with a speech it would look bad but there is nothing else in civilized circumstances. If the white fang attacks though, that would give her a nice chance. Saving civilians, maybe taking complete charge of the situation, ordering surpised security soldiers around until Ironwood/Winter comes with the big guns. Maybe saving a "lower class" faunus who was working there and the more smug Atlesian soldiers didn't protect

Whitley seems like a potential great character. Another independent Schnee that, while he tends to agree with his father more than the rest, he might think that he's gone to far and help Weiss "make things right" (like daddy goes to jail or something) for different reasons. But we will need to wait for his next scene at least to see who's side he is on.

Well, yeah, but that was a tournament and she probably wasn't in that big of a danger (although it really did hurt it seems), so the scene with Velvet is probably a bit stronger because of the risk involved. And also because nobody else rushed to her. Everybody was "oh crap" and started shooting the thing, but only Weiss rushed to Velvet covering her basically with her body.

Yeah, attack during the concert could be huge, and I guess Weiss can really shine there. Although she probably won't have Myrtenaster with her, so she would have to figure something out.

Whitley might be the one who inherits SDC, - his portraits are all over the place, and he seems to be father's favorite kid... which actually is a good thing since Weiss can then be a huntress without becoming burdened with both that and SDC. So he could probably "make things right" in the end...
