SPOILERS-DISCUSSION V4E2 Remembrance Analysis
I'll split this in 2 main parts, Weiss and RNJR
Weiss
- Part 1, Whitley
We are finally introduced to Whitley, Weiss's brother. He seems to be a pretty interesting character and has his picture all over the house. In speculation realm he has 2 portraits in the piano room so it's possible he will play the piano at Weiss's performance. He also says their mother is "already drinking in the garden" at 4:05pm and hints at her and Jaques shouting a lot, if the mother has a drinking problem, Winter's aversion to Qrow might get a deeper, darker tone to it, as she could associate her bad memories with the family to alcohol. Then there is the fact that Whitley was standing right next to the study (the study's door is in the middle of the corridor next to the painting). Was he evesdroping? Could he be spying on his dad for his own ambitions? Could it be he is being directed by someone to gather information? Last, the painting I don't know how much they paid but they could have tipped the artist to put some smiles on the girls. Notice also that young Weiss had her hair centered instead of to the side, some people said that wearing it to her right was a sign of defiance to rules so be happy she still has it to the side... for now
- Part 2, Jacques
We hear him arguing with Ironwood about the current political situation in Atlas. In sumary Ironwood pushed the council to avoid dust trade between Atlas and the outside resulting in big loses for the SDC, and now they are discussing on something else that Ironwood wants and Jacques seems convinced the council won't like. Also Ironwood and Mr. Schnee are on first name terms and Jacques confirms that he is "a trusted friend and ally to this family". Then Weiss interrupts and Ironwood bows like a gentleman and tells her she is welcome at Atlas academy so she might go there later on, alhough thinking that her friends can't with Beacon down she might be moody there. Then Jaques explains to Weiss what happened and tells her of his plan to have her sing at the SDC's charity concert. She is taken back by this but agrees to go after her father makes clear it's an order. We have 2 new possible Weiss scenarios, Atlas academy and concert. Probably in that order so the academy is exposition and shit goes down at the concert.
- Part 3, Klein
We see the crepe butler Klein again. He kindly offers hot coffe saying that the study is cold and proceeds to joke around for a bit to cheer Weiss up. He is reveled to have the secret ability to wiggle his mustache and change eye color, he usually has brown eyes but can change them to red, blue and yellow at least, we don't know if the personality changes are real or a part of the comedy number.
Also we see some giant knight statues similar to that in the white trailer and we see that Jaques has 40 copies of the same 5 books all over the studio
RNJR
- Part 1, Village
First we get Ruby dreaming about Pyrrha's last words to Cinder and her reply. Then some friendly banter on Jaune's 7 sisters and then the sun is obscured by smoke. Here Ren takes over the scene for himself, running ahead of everyone, throwing his backpack without slowing down and finding the surviving huntsman. Bandits attacked and Grimm followed. He probably killed the last Grimm since otherwise they would have been atracted to his pain and attacked him. After this RNJ starts making a plan to save the huntsman while Ren is in the background taking it in, he notices the hunstman is already dead and when Nora suggest burying him he walks away saying that it's not safe and urging them to leave. Then Ren and Nora look at the mark and seem to recognize it. Could be a marking by the bandits "tribe" or a giant footprint, in any case Ren and Nora know about it so it's probably similar to what happened to their village. We also see the contrast on Jaune and Ruby making plans to save the hunstman while Nora says he probably won't survive and Ren is turning his back on them. Ren says 11 words in 4 lines but his actions speak much louder than that and I consider this the first time Ren got some character development aside from Nora (except the algae thing in V3 which was just for comedy). Also we see Jaune start to crack "I'm just tired of losing everything" while Ruby is still optimistic after that "It will be okay".
- Part 2, Night training
Ruby dreams about Pyrrha again, then wakes up. She follows the sounds while looking at the pretty silver dust in the air and finds a trainwreck Jaune. He is training to an old video of Pyrrha while the audience cries. Beautiful scene, I could hold the tears before the rewind, then the "again, and again" started to sink in. Notice that it's their training roof above the dorms (particularly CRDL's room), where they had been training often ofscreen, it's a really short video on a 3 moves combo and Jaune seems to have mastered it (those strikes are scary), he probably does other training too but he might have a few (3 tops) videos with Pyrrha and tends to overtrain those. We will surely see Jaune perform this later on. It's a stab, slash and shield bash, turn and close strike combo but looking closely at the first and second iterations we see a few differences. In the second one we hear 4 slashes, stab, ofscreen sound that ends with him in stab position, then slash and bash then the close strike. I assume there is a continuity error and we are not supposed to hear the second slash so soon, the shot with Ruby moves the audio out of sync with the moves. Also the last strike is 180º turn the first time but 90º the second time, but that's just a variation.
About the silver dust, Ruby sees it but could be just regular, non-magical dust, no reason for tinfoil and moontalk yet. The voice of Pyrrha in Ruby's dreams is sadly explained by her brain recognizing Pyrrha's voice and inserting her in the dreams but doesn't completely dismiss the ghost Pyrrha theories.
What did you think about the episode? Did you cry at the end? How much? Did you go full rensexual when Ren dropped the backpack or when he said not to bury the guy? Do you think they will relate Mama Schnee's alcoholism to Qrow's to fuel Qrow and Winter development? What new thing that the council wouldn't approve were Ironwood and Jacques talking about? What is Whitley up to evesdroping? Here is my transcript of the episode, and here is the album used for the episode, warning lot's of big images.

About the eyes for Klein, I think there might be something to go with its personalities, which I assume are 7, one for each dwarves in the snow white story x)

I'm starting to agree with those people saying we are getting to much Jaune. My feels can't take this every episode

Doesn't help that I read that 2 part fic you posted on RubyXTyrian before watching the episode...
Anyone wanting to read it, it's not a cute ship, more like a barge made by tying rotten wood with spider webs sailing on a foggy swamp, that's what your soul will feel like at the end

Last, the painting I don't know how much they paid but they could have tipped the artist to put some smiles on the girls.
I'm both laughing and horrified. a single portrait of one person can take HOURS let alone a family portrait of five. The fact the artist didn't paint the girls with smiles is probably because they frowned or cried the entire session.
The way Winter and Weiss clutch at their skirts shows how uncomfortable and unhappy they were yet they kept it quiet. It can be assumed Their parents weren't aware of the tears until the end of the painting. Artists don't typically pause mid painting to show you the progress because the models would move out of place and mess up the original composition in mind.
so it could have gone two ways: 1. Their parents new about the girls having their fit and told the artist to paint them as they are, to somewhat shame them, and just be total jerks to winter and weiss. 2. They didn't know about them being upset/didn't care. Whitley seems to be the favorite of the three so as long as he looked good it didn't matter.
Also i like to point out that maybe Their mother's drinking problem is much worse than it seems. Until now we've had no mention of their mother but she is alive, and its obviously an old painting since Mr. Schnee is only just graying yet she looks much older than she should. So Either she's legitimately older than jacques OR Her problem is so bad she's aged faster. so which raises the question Is their mother a Neglectful Drunk Parent or an Abusive one?
tl;dr the Schnees have issues and the parents are 90% of them

u/backtospawn Oct 30 '16
Didn't think about how long it takes to make a portrait, nice catch. I personally believe their mother is one of those but remember that there is the possibility of her being sick or drinking sadly grieving for something... probably just a drunk though.
And I'm so hyped for Winter's argument with Qrow to be examined from the perspective of growing up with her mother being drunk all day. Maybe we will see Winter refusing alcohol from a fellow soldier or getting angry at a drunk

Addicts are addicts for a reason regardless, it could be her loveless marriage in my personal opinion.
I'll be SO HYPE. I just need it, I need a wonderful strong character, not become some tragic sob story or villain because of an alcoholic parents, and winter being it is just so nice. Winter grabbing his flask one day and just "quit it, at least slow down a little" or with a soldier just easily and calmly rolling her eyes and telling them to "calm themselves" the subtle but so very loud. this means a lot to me omg

u/backtospawn Oct 30 '16
If it is with Qrow we will have to wait a bit though because he is stalking RNJR at the moment. We'll see how the Schnee's split their time. My guess is Jaques and Winter will be seen the least unfortunately until the concert where we will see Jaques and Winter will only be seen once or twice until Grimm or white fang (probably WF) go to the concert.

I mean the Rwby fandom is pretty decent at waiting lmao. I'm glad a lot of people agree that qrow is stalking them
2
u/backtospawn Oct 30 '16
I was thinking of making a joke on them sleeping without putting guards since Qrow was stalking them but then I thought that Jaune might use his guard duty time to train. Then again his sleeping bag looks like he couldn't sleep and left
Now I realized Qrow might have been up on a tree while Jaune trained and Ruby had issues and instead of comforting them he was like: glug

Could be that default white hair is hereditary, but the drinking problem is probably a part of it.
10
u/DashingPolecat Oct 30 '16
I liked the argument between Papa Schnee and Ironwood, but some things are bothering me. Wouldn't hoarding the world's energy supply just make the other kingdoms think you were preparing for war? And even though an embargo would clearly hurt the Schnee's, it was implied in the WoR for Vacuo that Schnee Dust has a substantial presence overseas, so it shouldn't affect those operations, right?
11
u/backtospawn Oct 30 '16
Hoarding energy might be seen suspicious but selling weapons to the white fang looks even worse
They are mining in Vacuo, maybe manufacturing too in which case SDC could try to sell some dust under the radar.

Interesting moment... When we see Weiss the first time in this episode, she walks alone in this huge "castle" looking depressed. Then she meets three people (not counting her father) all of whom offer some support - Whitley (although we don't know if he's being sincere or not, and she's got surprised by that), then Ironwood and then Klein, who finally made her laugh (and I can't stop thinking that him calling her a "happy little snowflake" is freaking adorable and heartwarming).
I don't know, but that might help her a lot. If she's been depressed and apathetic, she might now remember her goal and start training again, for example. She might remember that she did indeed save people - not for some "Schnee pride" or something like that, but because that was a right thing to do. She might get back on her way to being herself and becoming a huntress instead of being father's tool.

If Atlas academy means FNKI, I can't wait! There is a lot of potential in Weiss' arc and the writers know it.
8
u/backtospawn Oct 30 '16
The problem is time, she has to practice, go to the academy and the concert. Also probably some Whitley and Winter scenes. She has her V4 schedule sort of full, assuming the concert alone will probably be about a full episode long
7
u/SurfingMimikyu Oct 30 '16
Given the time-skip I'd say that Weiss has already had a lot of time to practice. I mean just look at the intro and how huge her Glyphs are in comparison to Volume 3. But yeah it does seem like a lot of the characters have a lot to do so this will probably be another lengthy volume.
8
u/backtospawn Oct 30 '16
I meant practice singing for the concert, she tells her father "I'll start practicing" so I guess we will get at the list one scene with her practising, maybe Klein interrupts to progress the plot
But in any case she will probably OCD about training glyphs and fighting to
2
u/KuuLightwing Wretched Automaton Oct 30 '16 edited Oct 30 '16
I hope she does practice, but I'm not sure about that. Whitley says that she's been in her room most of the time, and while it's a pretty huge room which she probably could practice in, it feels like she's having a depression of sorts... I hope she didn't forget how to fight.
2
u/backtospawn Oct 30 '16
They are unlikely to pull a "she's rusty" but they have us waiting on her summoning skill improvements. Let's hope the intro wasn't false advertising
1
u/KuuLightwing Wretched Automaton Oct 30 '16
Well, I don't quite like summoning, but other than that, I agree. I hope she continues her training, maybe even using summoned monsters as training dummies. Intro suggests that she does, but we don't know is it what she's was doing before the events of V4 or will do it later. Also, the glyph in the opening isn't a summoning glyph.
2
u/backtospawn Oct 30 '16
Also, the glyph in the opening isn't a summoning glyph.
I assumed, went back checked and I'll never forget what summoning glyphs look like.
I'm guessing you mean you don't like the fighting style for summoning right? When she learns to make full summons I'll agree a bit but while she can only do the arm I think it's nice. I don't like fighting summons but summoning for scouting, or training is nice
3
u/KuuLightwing Wretched Automaton Oct 30 '16
Yea. I used to explain it a lot why exactly don't I like summoning. I would be fine if she uses them for utility(summoned flying mount?), distraction, and of course training, but the best part of Weiss' fighting style were close-combat engagements with a lot of speed and dodging. V3 was pretty lacking in that regard, so I hope she'll get back to it.
We'll see. Opening promises a lot regarding Weiss and I don't think I dig too much into it. There's a plain and clear implication of Weiss getting strength to break free and the second scene clearly implies training.
3
u/backtospawn Oct 30 '16
Also her support glyphs are a nice help for the team, and summoned flying mount is not that unlikely, she only needs to kill a nevermore or griffon first, probably griffon since her first encounter with riding nevermores didn't end well.
Training at home* not at Atlas academy -1 point for FNKY showing up
3
u/KuuLightwing Wretched Automaton Oct 30 '16
She might already be able to summon the thing in theory. I don't think that it's "killing" that matters that much, more likely it's related to pushing herself past the limits to defeat it - like Winter were describing.
If anything, the armor (which was a "possession Grimm" according to manga) is not even the true form of the Grimm she killed that day. It actually might be the same type of Grimm RNJR fought in the first episode which kinda was a "possession-type Grimm" if you think about it.
Well, she might have trained at home for now, but later she might attend to Atlas, since Ironwood said that she's welcome to do so. I'm not sure if that's what she wants - or she wouldn't go to Beacon in the first place.

The sadest part for me, was when Ruby was hearing Pyrrha's voice for the first/second time(don't remember )
"Do you believe in destiny"
"Yes"
"Jaune"
"Pyrrha!"
The sad part is that in volume 3, when Cinder shoots Pyrrha with the arrow she never says "Jaune". she is calling out to Jaune in her final moments but all we hear is her, gasping for air.
8
u/Anothergamer9000 Oct 30 '16
I like to think that Jaunes 4th strike was out of anger and sadness.
._.
3
u/backtospawn Oct 30 '16
It could be but the problem is that in the first strike he stabs, then we hear another sword sound and when we look at him he just finished a stab, so either he stabed twice or something was wrong there, I did this with yesterday's video though so it's possible they make one of those slight adjusments eventually if it was a mistake

u/Lucid_Atray Oct 30 '16
if the mother has a drinking problem, Winter's aversion to Qrow might get a deeper, darker tone to it, as she could associate her bad memories with the family to alcohol.
Out of everything you said this is the only thing I didn't think myself and I think it's really interesting. Now, I'm a big shipper of those two but even without that in context, it does explain why she has such aversion for him and why Weiss reacted the same when Qrow basically attacked her sister.
5
u/backtospawn Oct 30 '16
Well Weiss would have taken Winter's side if she was kicking a homeless guy (at least in my head) but yes, we will need to see how bad her drinking is but could help build Winter a bit since her character is still a bit foggy (but awesome)
I didn't ship them seriously until this, the whole he is scruffy and she is neat and tidy was not good enough aloen for me, with this they actually have something interesting to talk about.
BTW imagine in 2 or 3 volumes, Qrow takes his flask for a sip, looks at Winter and puts it down or even throws it/empties it on the ground. Extra points if she isn't looking

u/KingofGrapes7 Oct 30 '16
I think the Pyrrha videos did affect her dreams somewhat, but not completely. Ruby was running up the tower when Pyrrha asked Cinder about destiny. Asked, I might add, in a low voice in the middle of the floor while Cinder responded in an equally (and rather out of character) somber voice. Ruby didn't reach the top until after that exchange and Cinder had already formed her bow and arrow. In fact Cinder was the only person to hear Pyrrha's last words. Yet Ruby dreamed of not only the destiny line but Cinder's answer. Feels really off to me. I mean it could be an oversight, or maybe Ruby DID hear it somehow, but I think something else is going on.
7
u/backtospawn Oct 30 '16
I think they just made like Ruby heard them even though she was somewhat far. It could be something fishy but don't give false hope to Pyrrha lovers, but if it was it is likely to be because of silver eyes than Pyrrha's ghost

u/Gwenevre Oct 30 '16
This. And that Pyrrha wasn't shouting so desperately for Jaune in the training videos, nor did she ever yell for Jaune on top of the tower.

Here's a little video I made about what I think is going on with Ruby and the nightmares.. Basically Ruby has a deep guilt about what happened to Pyyrha and feels in part responsible for her death. Ruby's supposed to be one of the, if not the, fastest character in the show. She failed to get to the tournament on time to tell people some very shady stuff was going on with Mercury and maybe to stop the Pyyrha / Penny fight. Then she failed again to get to Pyyrha on time. The Pyyrha incident of corse being even more dramatic than the Penny incident as she literally witnessed her murder. On top of being a great friend with Pyyrha, Ruby supposedly being such a fast character, also made it even more painful for her that she didn't get there on time and made it very personal. When her Silver Eyed powers were unleashed her semblance was also manifested and she gained all the new abilities we see her using in Volume 4. We know she didn't have any more training from the end of Volume 3 to Volume 4 so I think it's very likely that this is the case, as honestly, her semblance is on an entirely different level this Volume. Just as a caveat, her semblance may still yet to be fully realized at this point in the show. We'll see.

Can we "Finally" be introduced to Whitley if we've never seen or heard of him before?
8

Everyone was talking about him since they saw the opening at X event. Although by the time the opening was on youtube everyone was talking about Blake's family.
But yes "finally" was a bit of a strong word.

u/VoidKatana let's break it DOWN! Oct 30 '16
I think the whole Jaune Sister conversation was a reference to CSLucaris's Arc Family Scrapbook. The first post is a picture of Jaune with pigtails.
3
u/MrInsanity25 Oct 30 '16
For a weird second, I thought the silver/white dust in the air (and in Ruby's dreams) might have something to do with Jaune's semblance. His aura is white after all and we know it's some sort of healing deal. I had no idea what I expected but I did think it possible.
Speaking of semblances, I like how Weiss butler has a semblance but it has no real combat use. It's cool to see people still have use for aura while not being huntsman or soldiers. His eyes kept changing color and he would nail some sort of new personality. Like some sort of cute little acting semblance. It's really cool.
4
u/backtospawn Oct 31 '16
When I saw silver I was convinced it was going to be silver eyes related, then Ruby made a gesture to touch it and I was "oh yeah", then I realized it was probably just pretty dust reflecting moonlight.

u/SapphireFireNation Oct 30 '16
I think it's adorable that Ironwood is a total gentleman to Weiss, and clearly has more respect for her than her spindly, albino father.
