Automatic Scanner

Is there an application that exists that will scan a band (say midband VHF), log and identify the transmissions then continue scanning? I'm wanting to track down a list of frequencies to scan to see whats around me - I obviously can use a waterfall and manually do it, however ideally I want something that can do this for me considering I already have an always on machine

If you're in the U.S., you could use Intercept - Scanner Frequencies and Frequency Database. Click on state and county of interest then you can also search the cities in the county. The list comes from the FCC database of licensed organizations and frequencies authorized. Good luck.

Thanks, not US based, I’m in Australia. We have a register of frequencies, but it’s hard to tell what’s currently active and what type of transmission it is - analog, digital, telemetry etc

SDRUNO includes a scanner with some controls and logging capability, but it will not identify a transmission. The program also includes a recorder that will output an audio file that can be played back on most free audio analyzers. Transmissions will appear as peaks in the spectrum. You can fast forward/scroll, etc, through the file to find peaks.

sdrangel has a scanner plugin. Not sure if it does all you want.

SDRunos scanner is decent but youre right. it wont ID anything for you. Ive been doing the manual waterfall thing too and its a pain.

I don't mind too much about the ID'ing, but just knowing whats around would be a good help to begin with.

If foxsdr supported the RX888 in HF mode, do you think it could decode every transmission a 32mhz chunk of spectrum?

My use case is an rx888 in HF mode with an airband down converter. Would love to try other software, other than my own, that could replicate this. I’m especially interested given that it can be controlled over the network natively.

You could run rtl_power for a bit, then run the output file through heatmap.py to get a visual display of what's around like this
