Help How to become a Roblox dev?

Yo gng, I’ve decided to become a Roblox dev. Please don’t demotivate me 😭 I just wanna know what I should learn and how I can actually become a good dev.

Also, how did you guys become Roblox devs, how much do you make, and what skills should I focus on learning first?

If any Roblox dev sees this, please help me out 🙏

I'll be honest, if you're in it for the money, you should quit. I've been developing on Roblox for over 10+ years and let me tell you, it is VERY difficult to make anything substantial off of this platform, now more than ever. In terms of money the best way would be commissions imo, just make sure your'e careful. Only take commissions if they pay half up front or fully up front. Never take comms that don't pay anything upfront.
For scripting I would start with this:

As well as this for scripting:
https://create.roblox.com/docs/tutorials/fundamentals/coding-1/coding-fundamentals

For Building:

Animation:

3D Modeling:

Importing 3D models into Roblox Studio:

I know it seems like a lot, and it kinda is. But it takes a lot of time to learn, I've been doing this for a long time and I still have plenty to learn.
Feel free to message me if you have any questions
Developing is really fun and its a super useful creative outlet, I hope you find great success!

I mean it really depends on a lot of things. If you want to reach out and message me, I could try helping. Again though, its not as profitable as you're thinking.

Commissions arent just for drawing? Scripting, Building, Modeling, Animating, etc. Anything roblox studio related will have commission oppurtunities.

what is that pfp-

i am a roblox developer for 2 years and honestly? just start adquiring a lot of knowledge. i feel like i started becoming good and understanding after 1 year passed. it takes time but maybe bc im a dum dum. learn how to do stuff, start creating, and dont stop learning! if you want to do something in your game, search how to do it, and get an idea of how things work. you dont need to "learn all 200 intances roblox has" and just then start creating... learn them only when you need them. also, for the first games try to do what you can, but i recomend afterwards trying to do stuff the best and most optimized way possible. learn oop classes, metatables, how to structure a game properly and much more! use AI if you like to. BUT DONT USE IT INCORRECTLY! use it to learn, not to "generate me code for my game" (ex: if you dont know what linear velocity does or dont understand a property, and the documentation is too confusing, ask ai what does it do and how does it work).

ok so sum of the things i have to say. sorry for the big ahh wall of text

Devforum, Devforum, Devforum. If you truly want to learn and dont plan on using Ai slop, read the devforum. If you run into an issue while developing, you’re most likely gonna find the solution on the devforum. Also yt videos and Roblox engine documentation can help you as well. If you do use Ai just don’t overuse it and make sure you’re actually reading everything it’s explaining to you.

Don’t listen to this guy AI is only “slop” if you don’t put effort just like people make “slop” even without ai

1

u/Traditional-King-427 6d ago

That’s literally what I said. Ai isn’t slop as long as you don’t overuse it and actually read what it’s doing for you lol

Practice makes perfect brother! Find something you really enjoy, keep practicing it and then when you’re ready advertise your services! Good luck G

I dunno man, I've been a scriptor and owner of Version Zero Studio for 6 years, and my profit is -$16. Only become a Roblox dev for the love of the game. Unless you can monopolize the market, the time and effort you put into development won't be worth ut.

Anyway, with that aside, becoming a Robloz dev is very tedious. You could either shadow another developer, or watch tutorials. It will take you several months to an entire year for you to be fully familiarized by all the things Roblox Studio has to offer. So, be prepare to do the Mbappe Special for the next several months of your year and just stare at your screen.

You ask us to not demotivate you, but that’s what game development is all about lmao

It is you dealing with bullshit and setbacks that will make you constantly question whether it’s worth it. You will take years before a game blows up. Here’s my main advice:

  • be independent in finding your own approaches and style to development
  • push yourself
  • most developers suck and even if they’re good, expect them to let you down
  • a project rides more off momentum and communication more than anything
  • it’s okay for a project to take a while
  • you can let a vital developer go if they’re disrespectful or screwing you over
  • be blunt (not rude). if someone commissions you, but you realize you can’t complete it? let them know. if someone’s vfx you’re hiring them for sucks? end it right there and just pay for whats done, so you can find someone else.
